I'm kind of a names nerd, and I think folks here might be too. What are some names you guys have always liked? Have you named any characters? Do you have children, have brainstormed names for children, or don't want any but have a few picked out in the event that someone points a gun at you and demands you name their child? Have any neat pet names? This is a place for names that you take at least a little seriously, whether it's real life or a fandom somewhere. I'm keeping it in this forum since my main inspiration for making this thread wasn't strictly fandom. I know I've got a vendetta against strange spellings, but I promise I'll keep that stuff to the other name thread. This is more of a "I wouldn't choose that name myself but i respect your choices" place. Anyway, my boyfriend and i have done some brainstorming for giggles and because we're giant softies about future babs. I wanted to name my daughter Rosemary after a great grandmother I've never met, but whose poetry I've read. Tentative middle name is Brienne, after the GoT character. For a boy, he likes Isaac, and we agree Joshua (im fond of Bible names but the main inspiration was Joshua Ramsay from Marianas Trench) is good for his middle name.
I have a real soft spot for when people name their kids after members of their family, dead or alive. I'm pretty sure if I ever have kids I'll do that. I was named for my great-grandmother and great-aunt, and my brother and sister were named for my paternal and maternal grandparents respectively. I also really like names that have a variety of possible nicknames. It's a pretty Dutch thing to have a birth announcement card sent round the people you know, with something that looks like this (generic English names as an example): Born: Elizabeth (Lisa) Mary Lastname, where the part in brackets is the name you'll actually use on a day to day basis. Or you can even just decide to call them something completely different in the day to day. I had a flatmate once whose first initial was M, but it didn't stand for the name we all called her, it was a different name with an M. That's a bit eccentric even for me though :P
Thats one of the reasons i like Rosemary, all the built in nickname potential! It helps that i like Mary and Rose already.
OH HELL YES, love this thread!! Thanks for making it! So being the known TMBG goblin I am and also having a genuine family tradition of naming kids variants of John, I’m strongly planning on naming a hypothetical future son John Henry, Jack as a nickname. But like, my ideal is two kids, and obviously I ain’t gonna pull a George Foreman and name them both the same thing? I like Sidney and Isaac both but I absolutely could not pair them in that order because my last name begins with an N and giving my actual human child SIN as initials seems cruel. Also I really dig the idea of Jackie as a nickname for Jane. Violet is my favorite flower name, but flower names in general tend to be really pretty? Honestly in general my name taste tends towards kind of classic names. Constance is another good one. Also Charlotte. Nickname potential is super important to me too, as someone who hates her given name but is mercifully able to shorten it to something she likes. :P Oh and I really like the idea of Linnell as a middle name, but it would have to be a middle name due to my own hangups vis a vis unusual spellings (my given name has a silent H oops). Ellie would make a great nickname too. :D
I don't want kids, but coming up with fun names for pets is great. I really want a big floofy white cat or angora ferret which I'll name Marshmallow.
ive known two people who brainstormed/crowdsourced their middle names at a support group meeting (eta I was gonna continue this train of thought but forget what it was) Someone I know has considered changing their first name to Hex, because they go by their middle name and want their first initial to be H. Extremely Valid Everett might become my middle name, I was trying it out by using it as a username here but im not like First Name married to it My original name was gonna be used for my mom's younger sister, but then a local kid with that name died so they went with Diane instead. So my mom put the name in her pocket for like 30something years I guess I knew a Linnea in high school, pronounced luh NAY uh
Every time I want to name a character, the first name that pops into my head is always Ungoliant. My brain just picked that as the default setting for "name." No I have no idea why. I also really like the name Myria, I've named two different characters Myria. When it comes to irl names I sort of want to name any future kid I may have Friday. It's a translation of my dad's last name. My sibling and I both have my mom's last name because we're both AFAB, and we have our dad's last name as a second middle name. If either of us had been boys it would have been the other way around. I really like it as an alternative to hyphenated last names, but it also kind of bugs me that neither of us would end up passing our dad's last name on. (In practice "us" means "me" since my sibling definitely doesn't want kids.) Naming a potential future kid after my dad's side of the family seems like a nice subtle way to do that, and I think Friday is a nice name anyway.
I've always loved the name Irah but it seems like the kind of name that would get a kid teased so it's always been one of those back burner names.
Is that Irah like "eye-rah" or like "ee-rah"? If it's the latter you could name a kid "Irina" and call them "Ira" for short. I have a family member by that name and as far as I know she's never gotten teased for being an Irina. (Now that I think about it, "Ira" as in "eye-rah" might also be a valid way to shorten the name "Irina", even if it's not the canonical way.) Cons: Is not a gender-neutral name in the slightest
Naming is very hard for me. But there are some I like and which I use and reuse. My most common name I use in video games when I am not allowed to like cosplay as a character I like is "Alex". Alex I like because it is gender neutral. I could be a boy, I could be a girl. I AM BOTH. However I am also very fond of Mark. Mark is derived from Mars which is very manly. The most manly, in fact. Marcia is a feminine derivative of Mark. So I like using Marcia as well because it lets me be both a woman but very manly at that. It speaks of what is hidden. I have given myself a Mandalorian name. Sho'cye. It means ocean. Which should make sense to anyone as to why I'd pick that if even a bit of my thing with the ocean is known. It's a personal thing. Also it sounds nice. For those who do not know. The ' there when following a vowel is a glottal stop. The 'cy' meanwhile is pronounced similar to the 'sh' of English. So I guess something akin to like fucking I dunno..."show-uh-shay". With the "uh" of the glottal stop cutting off the word "show" to about half as long as it normally is in English.
That spelling appears to have more ambiguous origins, being linked back to Hebrew, but also Sanskrit (Iravati) and Russian (Irina as previously mentioned). With and without the H both appear to be commonly accepted spelling variations.
Huh, that’s super interesting! Is it known whether they’re from the same root? #oops language sperg mode
Husband and i agreed on Morgana if we ever decide to have kids and it comes out a girl, but for boys we have no idea. We dont like using names of family members (because my family sucks and i dont want them getting ideas) and we do not want any names that remind us of people we disliked in school as we were both bullied pretty heavily, and i also do not want biblical/religious names. It shortens the list considerably. As for characters, I always make a Liesel (or variations of it) in things i play, ever since i was 12. I just really like the name for some reason.
When I was little I wanted to name my kid something invented, like Iora, (Eye-oh-rah) or Arisea (Ah-ree-seh-ah). I grew up and realized that... might not be the best idea. So far I really like Miguel for a boy. I also like Diana and Laura for a girl, but that's the names of two of my cousins so it'd probably be a bit weird, so I've been thinking of Luna.
Some friends of mine just welcomed their second kid into the world, and both their little ones have lovely names! Zinnia (big sis) and Ramona (bebby). c:
I have an OC named Zinnia and agree, it is a very cute name. Ramona is nice too, my first thought is of the book character haha. I had So Many of those books
