Spoiler: up to 28 it was Cyclonus being emotionally Repressed and taking out his anger and helplessness about tailgate's condition on his own face. when tailgate got better, he repaired it, which is meaningful because his religious beliefs are weird about repairing superficial damage to armour. if tailgate had died, he would have kept the scratches to represent his Guilt and Despair because he is, again, Repressed.

So far as I can tell, whirl is a fucking pyschopath. Like, dishonest, violent, tortures things for fun, etcetera. Am I missing something here?

he's a psychopath ........ with feelings Nah the whole deal with Whirl is that he's been traumatized, mutilated, used, and basically had it beaten into him that he is a weapon in someone else's hands: wind him up, point him at your target, and let him loose. he's destructive, self-destructive, actively suicidal, and his moral compass is INCREDIBLY warped. He does have a conscience, he's just stopped listening to it for the most part. he had most of the good in him thoroughly stomped out and it's only recently that he's started to try to be a Good Person. he's tragic and awful and cruel and very very funny, and also, I'm a huge Whirl stan so take all my analysis/defensiveness with a grain of salt
Oooh, that makes a ton more sense. I think I'd somehow concluded he was torturing-and-killing the low-spark things, and/or that he was making excuses for it, but that analysis is WAY better.
