shelves in the hallways don't make much sense unless you have a bad space problem - keeping temperature, humidity etc. stable when doors are constantly opened and closed and the space walked through is more difficult than if you just put them in separate rooms. that stuff is especially important with older stuff with acid in the pages, if you don't store that in a controlled environment it just deteriorates.
of course, libraries that are basically one big room exist. they are not very practical in quite a few ways, though.

well a growing, living library would probably bubble out parts/the ends of the hallways to make rooms and then just need to have doors installed.

Or it might grow closed rooms that don´t open till they´re done growing. If you can open the door you know the room is ready.

Good points... Actually, hey! That could be why a living library needs people to tend to it. It thinks about things like humidity or the condition of the books about as often as we think of the detailed workings of our digestive system. Library symbiotes.

semiorganic solar cells. wiring in the walls that doesn't carry electricity but something else. sewage pipes connecting to an internal water system that processes it.
and then some asshole comes along and gives the library a fever.

Ahhh yes, you too! Look at that, look at that sense of a budding city/ecosystem. The solar cells are good, and sewage connection especially, it makes sense and it makes things work together! So many ways that can be built upon.

And callback to our Tumblr inspirations: flocks of baby books, lining up to get their first jackets before it gets too cold out. :p

Makes noises by vibrating its inner surface, so lots of sad elevator music, as befits a living building.

Occasionally it gets some ancient ruin stuck in its throat, and there's coughing noises and sudden drafts.

it probably grows wifi hotspots and sockets wherever they're needed.

it also probably goes through phases of interest in which it grows new rooms centered around such interests, either research or theme rooms. somewhere, there is a collection of folders which contain "it's not a phase mom it's who i am" posters.

tiny books are found in corners, and need to be returned to the infirmiary. no one quite knows if they're doing that on purpose. (does that mainly happen around easter or whenever/whatever the search-for-hidden-stuff holiday is?)

Cody talks to the library a lot. No one knows how, but they seem to understant each other.

I bet if you loop a corridor back on itself enough, and if the wall membranes sorta fall away, bam, new room with bookshelves.

    LIVING LIBRARY.

^Hey, no noncensual body mods! You better ask the library first.
Cody also has to be reminded that the books are not kittens, even if some are kittensized. She´s been known to hug them and purr at them.

I'm having a picture of Carson von Mekkhan in Faustus Heterodyne's throne in my head atm. And while I'm quite sure our library does not have need to drill holes into your skull to speak to you, are you sure you don't have wi-fi chips under your skin?
