I will within the next three months be moving into my own apartment that I signed the lease for last week.

I have all these different ideas for decorating and I thought it would be fun to do a thread about what people's (dream)homes look like.

I know I want mine to look like a geek lives there (because I am one) but tastefully. So I have all this art picked out on Etsy that I want once I have money for it.

Anyone else? What does your dream home look like?

(When I am not on mobile I'll include some links and pictures and stuff)

I think the house we'll move into next is going to be bigger (hopefully!) so that might alter some of our decor choices, but I really lean towards bold black/white accents and contemporary furniture with really vivid wall colors. I love accent walls in particular, and I love the way they make things pop-- our office is all white with black furniture and one brilliantly crimson wall (+bright red couch) and it makes the whole room so energetic.

Just, in general, I love doing Weird Shit with paint and color on the walls. We've got a force gradient in the bedroom that always makes it look like a soft twilight, we've got color pops all over the living room walls in bubbles and stuff, accent tiles in the kitchen... my ideal is something like contemporary/modern color use mixed with more toned back 70s wallpaper designs.

Oooh, you're speaking my language! I have pretty out there ideas about how much colour I want in my new house :D

For starters I want at least one wall to be purple. Deep, deep purple. Ideally I want a couch in some sort of colour, currently leaning toward a mustardy sort of yellow, and I want another part of the house to be a deep teal/aqua I think.

Just, you know, gimme all the colour. All of it :D

YESSSS color everywhere, color in all the things, COLOR

Our bedroom right now goes from a very pale lilac on one wall, a darker shade on the walls connecting, and then a deep shade of lavendar on the last wall-- it trains the light super well and makes it so soothing to sleep in, even during the daytime.

When I was younger, my mom let me paint my walls this sunflower yellow with big orange and blue circles scattered around; mixed with some heavier canvas curtains, it made the whole room so warm looking, it was like being hugged every time I walked in. Color is so fucking good, I love ti so much.

I wouldn't have expected this, but

apparently I like clean lines and minimalism in my house. maybe it's just because Ikea furniture is all we can afford, but we could have gotten frillier/fancier stuff, but we chose the simpler, more minimal stuff.

I like using textiles and color to make things interesting. We have a bright green couch with a patterned throw and a patterned pillow, and we'd get an interesting rug if we could afford it, of course we can't.

We have a lot of art from husband's brother/my brother-in-law on the walls, because he's an actual studio artist and he always gives us art for the holidays, but we have a lot of little nerd things around too, like Mega Man figures that we built together, Nendoroids, etc.

We can't paint the walls of our apartment, but we have lots of art to put up - art Tristan's done, poster prints I have from David Goines. We have art specifically for the kitchen, posters for the San Francisco Farmer's Market and for Chez Panisse. The Ravenswood Winery poster goes in the living room because we have, like, soft greens and tans and browns and birds. We should be getting more birds as soon as we have a tension rod for over the nook - we have bird and leaf curtains that we can keep pushed to one side except for when someone's staying with us.

Eventually I really want Tristan to be able to paint a mural somewhere. And lots of hardwood floors.

from the color discussions I've had with my partner, I think we're leaning woodsy whites and aurora borealis-feeling colors! with lots and lots of softer edges and fun textures. I've commandeered a chunk of future space in our future apartment for yarn storage as well, and we each decided on one Big Space item we want in a future house—grand piano for her, floor loom for me.

I have been busy with my appartement since December 1st, and yesterday I finally decided on dining room furniture, which resulted in this:

Three of the chairs are old ones from my mum's side of the family and three of the chairs are old ones from my dad's side of the family. The table comes from the thrift store. The wall colour is most accurate in the first picture :) I'm still debating with myself whether to paint the short wall in the blue-ish colour as well (though I wouldn't paint the radiator if I did that).

We also moved the secretaire today, it's going to be my postcard writing place. So above it I am going to hang a white board and a place to display cards I have received and a place to display cards I own/want to send. I'll probably center the secretaire more against the purple as well.

  9. It’s way too soon for me to think about having my own place yet, but I have a fondness for midcentury pieces, retro minimalism, glass top tables/glassboards, and white walls with colorful accent bits (like these white wall cubes with bright colors on the inside)

    Your apartment is looking awesome!

We have a townhouse we're moving into in . . . god, two weeks at this point, and I'm looking forward to it so much. It's got hardwood floors and an actually nice kitchen and we're going to be able to do our pop culture wall again.

I know it's not, like, The Thing any more, but I really really love textured paint. Not on every wall, but as an accent it's really nice. The house I grew up in had this sage green paint put on with flat metal plates in a sort of fan shape with a metallic gold all over with a sponge on top in the living room, and it straight up looked like dragon scales. It was amazing. I love the contrast of dark woods with bright color, and I like bright colors contrasted with low-saturation tones.

I also like bringing a theme through different areas of the house, but expressing it differently room to room. For example, my living room, dining room and kitchen in my apartment are all open to each other, and I ended up with black appliances, so my theme in those rooms is black and white objects, since I can't paint in there. So in the living room I have a huge MC Escher lithograph print and a black clock with white lettering, and my couch is black and my tables are dark wood, and in the dining room I have a set of lithograph anatomical art prints from etsy and a dark wood dining room set, and the kitchen has the black appliances. But the living room's variation on that theme is gold, so I also have a set of huge black and gold fans my parents got on their honeymoon in Hong Kong and my gold ps4 and several gold decorative objects, and the dining room's variation is blue so the skull prints actually have blue butterflies on them and I have blue cushions and curtains. And my bedroom is off the living room and is dark wood, gold, and dark red, so it gives the whole place a sense of continuity instead of having a lot of decorating schemes fitting together weirdly.

Edit: here's the art in my dining room for reference

Since this picture I have acquired a lovely rug in the colour of the purple wall, and a great IKEA second hand chair, and a lovely secretaire. I'll post a picture once I have actual things up on the wall and it look a bit more finished :)

I appear to have completely neglected this thread with updates of my house interior. It looks a lot more complete these days :)

I was looking for this thread because I bought something on a whim this morning that I wanted to share.

Athol Magarac I prefer reading posts without a lot of topics.

We don't have a style yet. It's just been scrounge and thrift-store deals. I admit that that couch had to go, but I don't see why the shade of green it was offended my husband so much. Then again, I can't describe it as more than "it was faded to between mossy and sagey, I can't tell if it was deep moss or emerald before it became the most comfortable couch I've ever owned."

I'm really happy with the Ikea bookshelves... just needs one more shelf per unit to be perfect.
