Getting Shwifty in Here: The Rick and Morty Thread

I could have sworn there was a R&M thread somewhere in here, but I can't find it and I want to listen to people talk about a thing I like.

I'm running on empty today, so translating my head-static to actual word-noises is off the table for now, but I wanted to start something before this rush of "fuck you world, i do what i want" wears off. So, yeah.

 

The writing in Rick & Morty is so good. I need to rewatch the entire thing now that the second season's going.

 

Rick and Morty is fucking amazing. It's also helped me through some tough times emotionally.

Ahh, man, I think my favorite thing about R&M, besides the whole "wreck of a man slowly ruins his grandkids but also love and affection" dynamic, it's probably the dialogue. It just constantly pings human to me, you know? Like, everyone's a touch erratic, cause the creators aren't too concerned with continuity, but they all feel very "people", with all these flaws and hypocrisies and good intentions. Oh, and I really dig the constant "good intentions and hard work don't automatically work out" thing that's been going on lately. It's a good thing to get into your head, yeh?

 

so i really honestly did not expect to like this show at all, because usually "bleak" is not my favorite flavor of comedy. but my friend showed me the meeseeks episode (which was an Experience) and i just... i had to see everything, i had to know how these people got here and what their relationships are and it's so awful but it's funny too. like these are all legitimately terrible people, but you can relate to them, they are written as real people, and not just vehicles for jokes or mouthpieces for a creator's viewpoint (*ahem*). and i think the relationships between the characters, how they interact and how they are trying to love each other in their own weird broken ways, is what keeps it from being so bleak i can't handle it.

also: "fuck you john you fucking dumb stupid idiot. you dumb, stupid, weak, pathetic, white, white...uh uh..white guilt milquetoast piece of human garbage." "i don't give a fuck. i'm gazorpazorp-fucking-field bitch. now give me my fucking enchiladas."

 

One of the things that really got me was when Beth actually fucking swallowed her pride to save that deer. I don't think I've ever seen that kinda thing in a comedy before. Prideful characters ruin everything because they can't let go is just how my mind expects that joke to pay off, and that Beth actually let it the fuck go and ended up saving the deer's life that way, that was just mind blowing to me. So, yeah, it's dark and the characters are awful and selfish, but they're trying their best and learning from their mistakes, and it's really lovely to see.

aaah god.... auto erotic assimilation... the end, not the stinger before that. where he tries to comfort the little warped crying monster, he holds it and pets it and tries to comfort it while building the lazer machine and then he strokes it before vaporizing it... oh god and then he put his head in the vaporizer but passed out before it went off
my god that was too fucking raw. i cried. he was so gentle with that monster. it was like he was trying to soothe himself, but he couldn't, so he did to the monster instead... it was like he was thinking suicide was the only self-care he had left.

 

Today's Improvised Television Pitches episode was much better than the previous Improvised Television Pitches episode. I think it's because the Improvised Television Pitches were the structure to the main plot of the episode, with Jerry and Beth pursuing their alternate lives -- but in this episode the Improvised Television Pitches were more a relief for the main plot, which had nothing to do with the pitches. I'm not a huge fan of improvised humour and don't think it can carry an entire episode on its own.

The soapbox Morty climbed on partway through was pretty funny, too.

Also, maybe it's because I'm a trans dude but I would be all over an alien prosthetic penis -- give me lasers and shit, it'll be awesome.

 

So does anyone have a link to somewhere where I can watch the whole series? I've seen a few eps and I've loved all of them, and I need more!

I keep seeing people talking about how Rick and Morty is casually sexist, and I don't really remembering being so. Raising Gazorpazorp is like, yeah, obviously, but the way the whole thing played out, it felt to me like the writers going, "oh yeah, every comedy does a man vs women sexism is bad except not that's the joke kinda episode, I guess we should too??" kinda deal. it felt weird and off putting and low energy to me, like the writers absolutely knew that there was nothing new they could possibly do with that kinda setup, but I dunno! If it were a meta joke about how played out that kinda junk was, it's probably have been more obvious, yeh? I dunno. Anyways, do any of you know of any times R&M was casually sexist?

 

Well, the character Rick is pretty sexist, and I all-too-often see people attribute character beliefs to the creator.

Raising Gazorpazorp actually struck me as the set-up for Rick and Summer's growing relationship, which has also involved Rick growing out of that sexism, bit by bit.
