we need a thread for this. It's so good, you guys. so good.

essentially it's a planner that structures an RPG adventure around your to-do list and chores. Form a party! hatch a cheetah and feed it candy! Wear a progression of silly seasonal hats!

I literally took a shower to attack an undead monster that was killing my friends.

Here's @Beldaran (who got me into the game) explaining how it works:

i tried habitrpg / now habitica and i lasted about a month or so before losing my motivation to do it, i know a lot of other people who had the same problem, but it was very helpful in staying organized during the time i did use it

I use it a lot, but I get this weird thing where I get upset if I'm doing too well on my habits and feel like I have to punish myself, regardless of whether I did the bad habit or not, just so they won't be blue anymore. Also, I do all my quests solo because I'd feel awful if someone took damage because of me.

edit: so, it's a fun game, but it gives me so much arbitrary guilt.

do + habits 'decay' over time if you don't do them? what about to-do items? is there any way to control the decay rate? i'm not sure i'm using the right terminology, i'm new to this. but like, apparently you take damage if you don't do stuff, or you get debuffs or sth, some kind of negative effect -- is that only for dailies?

i don't want to put things on my to-do list that will take me months to do, like a quilt project, and be taking damage the whole time because it isn't built for that.

i do really like the 'checklist' function tho, i've been putting off re-potting my echinacea and parsley plants for weeks because ugh task, but 'get out new pots' is a thing i can do, and 'put dirt in pots' is a thing i can do, and so forth.

I quite liked HabitRPG (assuming it's changed names? the page won't load for me rn -_-) for the time I was using it, but the biggest obstacle for me was that I couldn't put it on my phone, since I have a Windows phone. I had to remember to open the page, put in my to-do list, check it off ... I ended up keeping my list on my phone, then putting it in in one huge batch per month or so, and checking everything off - which kinda totally defeated the purpose. but my character got to be pretty bad-ass.

edit: @jacktrash - dailies hurt you if you don't do them, but you could also set them to not need doing on certain days (like if you only exercise three times a week then there's no point taking damage for the other four days). to-do items never hurt you if you left them - the longer you left them, the bigger the payoff was when you finally did it (which seems kinda backwards now that I think about it), and if you had to delete a to-do item, I think that hurt you. habits I never used much, so I don't remember too well. near the time I stopped using it they added a difficulty setting for the habits (so - "brush your teeth" could be an "easy" habit, whereas "write 1000 words" could be a "hard" habit), and that affected how much you got when you checked them off.

son of edit: oh hey i managed to log in. holy shit i'm a bit OP.

@jacktrash to-do items don't take damage, only dailies take damage daily (obv), but you can choose what days of the week those are on. it's probably better to put huge projects on to-do, because the longer it's on there, the more exp you get when you complete it. there's no real penalty to that besides feeling bad that it's been there for so long without being finished

plus apparently you can rest in the inn if you aren't going to be able to complete things daily and it won't penalize you

    which makes me feel better

    http://habitica.wikia.com/wiki/Establishing_Your_Tasks

i found some good advice for using their system. i especially like the one about making a habit item called "effort" that you can click to register that some task was extra hard today, and the thing about putting increments of an open-ended task like reading or exercising as a habit so you can click it however many times to register your accomplishment.

i was waffling over making a 'cardio' daily, because i want to do it about 4 days a week but which days? there's no way the site can give me the item on 'the days i don't feel completely shitty' and it doesn't have a function to reward you for averaging a certain number of completions per time period. but if i make a habit called "15 mins cardio" then i can talk myself into doing 15 mins when i just need to cowboy up, or ignore it when i'm having a flare-up, or click it five times when i zone out in the pool and accidentally do resistance jogging for almost an hour and a half. :D

  15. Oooh I've been using it since it got passed around on Tumblr the first time and it was buggy as heck, especially the iPhone app. 8D It's helped me draw practically every single day for 2 or 3 years now, and I've started doing things I find harder like writing a certain number of fiction words every day and putting some artistic effort into useful portfolio pieces. Speaking of which, I'm going to go change the difficulties on those things cause writing fiction is hella hard for me and there's no reason I should punish myself because it's just a hobby.

Also we should form a party or something, I'm a maxed-out wizard but I don't have any party members so my bosses die pretty slowly.

I pretty much use this site as a way to make sure I do everything I'm supposed to do before and after work.
My favorite part is definitely dressing up my habitican. It makes me really want to catch up on some to-dos so I can afford the new items that are usually introduced monthly.

i crossed off a couple minor to-do items and it went "critical hit bonus!" at me. what does that mean? why does putting the bulk tea in tupperwares make my kung fu stronger? does this effect carry over into real life? aM I KUNG FU PANDA NOW THIS IS IMPORTANT

crossposted from party chat cuz i have no clue how frequently folks check that

@jacktrash: you rolled a nat 20, basically. RNG decides if in-game you have magically done better. but, y'know, I for one enjoy the image of Very Impressively Putting Tea Away, so why not :D

what is the party ID? i may join ...
