so camp nanowrimo (which if you haven't heard of it, is nanowrimo but not in november, and you can set whatever word count goal you want, not just 50k. and i think they've got time and page count goals as alt options this time as well? there's also a cabin feature to group you with writing buddies, if you want) is coming up next month. i'm thinking of doing it, which means mad outlining for me this month lol. i figure i'll work on one of my fanfics, probably my twilight princess inspired pacrim AU, but maybe the silly soulmate thing from the tumblr.txt thread (oh yes, i am planning to write that :3) or one of my homestuck ideas.

anybody else thinking of doing it? what projects are you considering? word/page/time goals?

if i'm in it'd have to be.... not one single project, but rather just writing in general because i've just gotten sort of back into the habit again. which means more undertale ficlets, yay :P

I took a year or so off of any nano stuff, but I'm considering getting back in for july with a small goal. maybe 10k, though I hadn't heard there were alternate goal types. probably going to work on undertale fic stuff too, *highfives @Erica

haven't had much luck with cabins in the past, so I'm eh on that, unless we could do a Kintsugi cabin somehow? or just have this thread stand in for a cabin

    Eyyyyyy undertale *high fives*
I'd also have to set a pretty low goal haha. Dunno how much or how often I'm writing right now but it's.... not enough to make the 50k leap, definitely. (especially not when summer job starts bc that's from 7am-3pm which means I'm out of bed/home from 5am to 5pm and am positively exhausted once I'm back, ughhhh)

i've never really done the thing where you talk about what you're writing with others, but i'd be up for a kintsugi cabin! or just hanging around this thread more.

(what was the silly soulmate thing from the tumblr.txt thread?)

ooooooo undertale! what sorta undertale fic, if yall're up for sharing?

i'm setting a low goal, too, currently planning on 500w/day. if i hit that easily i'll up it, but that should be plenty. i need to get in the habit of daily writing first lmao.

on the create a project screen, they only have a word count goal listed, but i thought the email they sent out mentioned the others being options this time so idk what's up with that. also you can set your project type to "short stories" if you're doing a bunch of ficlets.

for cabins, we can create our own private one. those get assigned later this month i think, but i can try monkeying around with it now if you like. i am also cool with this thread being our cabin. also you don't necessarily have to use the cabin/thread to talk about the actual project if you don't want to, you could just talk about how your goals are going and whatnot. writerly commiseration and all that jazz.

i'll be doing a homestuck AU for this. i've decided on some of the worldbuilding already. :3

    ooooo

I had a rather epically-sized homestuck fic idea I was considering for NaNo

buuuut I was hoping I'd have my half-posted WIP finished before I started a new one u.u

    *is tempted anyway*

it occurs to me that I could be using this month to scrape together the research I need for one of the pieces I'm considering

is that going to happen? I have no idea

I wouldn't do a proper nothing started nano but wording with a group helps my motivation....

Fun fact: this here wixbloom was an ML for Brazil for 3 years! Then on my final year of ML'ing I was unable to finish NaNo at all due to overwork, and then I never did NaNo again. This year, though, I have an inkling to do Camp, as well as NaNo, and use them for a translation project I've been dreaming of doing for years - translating the complete works of Angela Carter into Portuguese, starting with her complete short fiction, which I already own (I own Burning Your Boats, which is an antology of all her short story books, but TBH I would start with The Bloody Chamber and then take a break from fiction to tackle her incredible The Sadeian Woman). Translation however is slooooooow work, much slower to me than actually writing a first draft of anything, so I couldn't aim to do 50k words I think - I'd have to set a more attainable goal, like 25 or 30 thousand words.

I've always wanted to do Nano, but I've never had the time to do it. Once I am working I might have the time. Maybe... (Though then I'd need an idea that can fill 50.000 words xD)

Camp nanowrimo is upon us! How's everyone feeling? Shockingly enough, I didn't do my necessary research, so I dunno what I'm doing with that fic. (No one should be shocked at this.) My brain helpfully (?) kept coming up with other ideas to write, so I guess I can do one of those instead, though I still haven't chosen which one, out of like 3 or 4 ideas...

This happens every time, I can never plan for nano. This is going to be a 10k trainwreck.

I have not even come close to finishing the WIP I was making a prerequisite, so I think I'm gonna sit this one out. u.u

@Kit Hey, should give one of them (WIP or plan) a try! I came up the plot for my novel what just-so-happened to be the day before Nanowrimo, and took part on a whim. Now I have a good 10k of text and a pretty solid plot for the rest.
The 50k target is ridiculous. Just write however much feels fun every day, don't turn it into a chore.
    ______________________________________________________________________

I'm not gonna be able to actually do camp NaNo bc family trip leaves on Saturday, but I'm working on my first (and really only) NaNo novel rn, and I need some tips.

Namely, on how to get the confidence to make my protagonist HELLA GAY.

    Slightly longer explanation:
Sci fi setting with intentionally visible diversity (setting is majority non-white, with a few 'white' characters for emphasis, prominent side character is NB). The narrative style is third-person (mostly) limited, so how characters feel about each other is communicated by descriptions of body language and dialogue.

Things that are staying no matter what:
    • Main character, "A" is a transman. This is hinted at, then explicitly stated.
    • A is psychically bonded to a guy, "B", and this was able to happen because they are very compatible people
    • For plot reasons, B "dies" and A then adopts B's kid. (B later joins back up with them in a clever disguise; this is par for the course considering I based the plot off Shakespeare.)
Things I am wary of including:
    • a romantic relationship (past, present, or future) between A and B
A lot of adventure stories contain some sort of romantic relationship, but I'm worried that just having said relationship be non-het will shoot the whole affair out of the sky when it comes to trying to distribute it to a general audience :/ Advice?

well, like. a trans mc is generally considered more niche than a queer romance? and there's some queer scifi already out there, so it's not like publishers are going to hit you with bricks for writing it.

sorry, I keep trying to answer this seriously, but every time I try it mostly comes out to 'do the thing!', because I'm sleepy. what do you consider a general audience anyway? because if that's 'all the people who read fiction, ever', then a bunch of them are already going to be turned off because it's scifi, but that doesn't stop people from writing it

yeah, just go for it. queer characters and relationships in fiction are more and more accepted. and anyway, write the story you want to write. get the manuscript written and worry about the rest later.

*waves rainbow pompoms* queer ALLLLL the things!

i nano'd last year! aaaand completley burnt myself out in the process. both mentally and physically, i definitly was not kind to my hands/wrists

so i dont think im going to do the full thing this year but i might try something? maybe like doing a one-shot a week or having a lower word count goal. i havent really written anything in months and i want to want to write stuff again

I'm going to try NaNo again this year for the first time in... geez, ten years? (I made a stab at it in 2009 but I fizzled out halfway through.) I've got a zillion projects but I really need to do something fresh and unburdened by expectations, so I'm going in blank. When the time comes I'll use a character generator to generate a few characters (with the D&Dish elements stripped off), a name generator to name them, and I'll pick a story prompt or two from a list, and off I'll go. I'm aiming to go at least at half speed - I'm not a very fast writer anymore, and it's not like I've got anything to prove.

It's been a few years since I've tried a proper nano attempt, but I think I'll just do a smaller personal goal this year, work on a fanfic or two. Which is kind of disappointing, feels like I'm going to miss out on the energy and excitement of doing nano, but that's better than not writing at all. Plus I'm probably going to be having a rough time in November anyway and 50k would wreck me.

    Think I'll try for 5k.
