i am currently of the opinion that while griddlehark is my preferred monogamous ship of choice that harrow should just be permitted to have three girlfriends. this is her right after being a repressed nun all her life.

I read the first book and enjoyed it quite a bit. I think I would have enjoyed it more as a comic, but that's true of most books I like. I do intend to read the second book at some point.

I don't have any strong extracanonical opinions on it, though.

ah. i got the second one like towards the end of the first one and then started on it IMMEDIATELY after i finished the first one basically. it just kind of hit like a large variety of things i like all at the same time. verbose and dense prose? hell yeah. dumb fuck meme humor? oh baby. GAY. GOTH. NUN. but yeah because of that i got through the two that are out right now real damn fast and why i've gone and looked at some passages in them. i am pondering giving them a thorough look through soon. gathering up quotes and things i find interesting. got a good chunk of poemfics written for it and some i am currently working on for it.

harrow's a fucking mood. and i find it funny that my opinion on gideon basically followed her opinion on gideon across the book.

THEY ARE SUCH GOOD BOOKS. ONES THAT MADE ME AWARE OF THE FACT THAT LIKE YEAH NO I JUST NEED TO SEE LIKE. THINGS. Like. Like. It just means a lot and hits a particular way for Gideon to be described as feeling emasculated. And it's REALLY hype for Harrow to be like "You have unmanned me". Like as the sort of woman I am and as someone who is a man at other times. That is just very nice to see.

gideon spends half the book pining after pretty girls and then gets shocked when Plot happens around her. legendary

a hot girl comes up to gideon and is like "hey it'd be sick if you jumped off this cliff" and she just does. meanwhile harrow is not there to supervise this incident because harrow is busy being convinced that the only way to keep gideon safe is to treat her like ass while harrow locks herself in a library for fifteen weeks.

YOOOOO I JUST FINISHED GTN AND AM WAITING ON HTN TO GET AVAILABLE AT THE LIBRARY

and i am so glad theres a thread here for this!!! as someone who read a lot of Tamsyn Muir's writing in her homestuck fanfic era, and as also a big lesbian, and as someone who loves magical mind-melding, i felt like these books were just fucking made for me. I love gideon and harrow, ship them like crazy, i am just riddled with the Brainrot as they say. I too, would jump off a cliff if a hot girl who was flirting with me told me to. Harrow and Gideon are OTP, but i, like Aon, also wish for them to be Covered In Bitches forevermore. it's what they deserve.

I saw someone on tumblr say that this series made them "2012-tumblr-level-rabid" and I honestly couldn't agree more. I had to run laps around my living room for like an hour after finishing the first book. shit is crazy

I saw a comic that had someone getting the book from a friend who said that. It was a cute one about like what the books meant to the comic maker as a butch. Made me tear up because like reading them ended up being very important in like my figuring out my gender shit on that front and get the confidence to just. Go back to looking how I like.

Gideon is a powerful doofus. Inspiring to butches and other similar sorts everywhere.

I think that comic was what I was thinking of, yeah!

I wouldn't really describe myself as super butch, and idk if it's just been the energy of a new fiction obsession, but I have been feeling more confident about my presentation/looks (and more motivated to go lift again lol) lately. Kinda funny how that works :)

Yeah I am still not really comfy applying the word to myself yet. But we're dressing how I like again and like moving that way. And we do have the butch preoccupation with wanting to protect people and Gideon's moment of feeling emasculated was a huge mood. SO LIKE.

We may just end up calling ourselves that at some point soon. Either way.

It's just kind of neat that like the character manages to inspire people and mean as much as she does.

    Yeah agreed!!
I have a lot of feelings about how 'good representation' in stories for me doesn't always come from the story being like 'this character is a lesbian' or using the right words or explicit actions (Gideon and Harrow, while having some very intense moments, don't technically have any explicit romance/kiss scenes) , but more from the feeling of like, yeah, wow, the person writing this just gets it, y'know?

Yeah, definitely. That's a thing that I've seen multiple butches bring up with Gideon. Is that the way she's written makes it very apparent that Muir gets it. And I've also heard that like a lot of time they just...Aren't written well in things. So this book means a lot on the front of They Get It.

Absolutely. And like, the way this book shows Gideon's sexual attraction to other women is just such a breath of fresh air to me. I feel like so often lesbians in fiction are portrayed as these pure maidens who have transcended humanity (either that or they're super objectified). But like, Gideon has a porn magazine collection, and gets really flustered by girls looking into her eyes and touching her, and can't stop staring at Corona in her swimsuit even though other stuff is happening, and the way all of this stuff is just described so matter-of-factly is just awesome. Gideon's attraction to girls isn't pure and sexless, but it's not gross and predatory either, it just is. Like, the satisfaction I got from reading those parts, I can't even put into words. I didn't know how badly I needed a story like this until I got it.

Oh fucking same. I'm mostly from a yuri background and like. Most of the kind of yuri I actually like was like...Extremely PURE. And like that's fine I guess but also like I dunno. I've got like sex shame issues from like being in a deeply sex negative religion. And I'm dealing with a culture that actively vilifies sexual interest in other women as innately predatory.

I just kind of want my ladies horny for other ladies. I need to see that, in fact.

Yes!!!! Seeing ladies horny for other ladies in a non-porn context is like, healing almost? If that makes sense? I mean don't get me wrong porn is great, but I think there's a weird psychological thing that happens when the only way you see women being attracted to other women is in full-on smut. I'm sure someone else has written about this more eloquently, but it makes it hard to process your own feelings of sexual attraction as something like, normal I guess.

Anyway, this book is great and I NEEEEED harrow the ninth to come from the library already i NEED to know what happened to gideon!!
Also, I've reached what I call the 'point of no return' in this fandom, which is when I figure out what all the characters would play if they were in a marching band. It is supremely nerdy and self-indulgent but I will share if anyone is interested.
