I figured that, since I had the idea to ask the forum for advice on a closed species @jashindamnit and I are making, I'd just make the thread about adopts in general.

For a crash course description, Adoptables are basically any design you buy to own from a person. There are "species" that are closed (unavailable to make one for yourself without creator permission) and open (free-for-all), but adoptables aren't restricted to specific species. They could just be a design you bought off an artist that they made in a batch, etc.

The species I'm referencing in the title is by snappledragons on deviantart! I saw their (currently open) auction while browsing through dA and I'm crying. This species is so cute. I want one.

Do you make adoptables? Have a species you're selling? Did you buy an adoptable and just want to show it off? Need advice?

I figured this could also maybe be a mini-hub where people could plug their designs for sale or trade, too.

Okay, so my original intent with this thread is: Jash was dismayed with the inability to fully customize her previous species, and I said "hey what if we did this."

We meaning she draws things, I write backinfo, potentially give her design suggestions, etc.

She drew up some concepts and I wrote a pretty chunky amount of words, all while it was like. Six in the morning...

The TL;DR version, because the writing is all over the place and messily-done in notepad and full of holes, is what happens when you want to cross a dragon with a gargoyle with something furry. We don't even have a name for them yet, oops!

    (Species name)

    HISTORY -
(species) has been bred and raised for centuries as a guardian of the home, whether it be in a castle or cottage. Prior to their domesticated life, (species) were found in secluded or otherwise blocked-off areas, including caves, forests, and sometimes manmade places like junkyards. Their inclination to covet prompted humans to tame these creatures for safeguarding homes and other treasures.

    BIOLOGY -
Depending on their environment, (species) can range from the size of a bunny to as large as a car, and they all come in a manner of sizes. Small, or dwarf (species) typically are kept as housepets, due to their easy keep inside the home. Common or garden (species) can get pretty large, but the biggest are royal (species).

Habitat also dictates common colors among (species). The most diverse coats belong to garden breeds, which blend in well with the flowers, trees and other foliage. Dwarf (species) oftentimes have interesting coat patterns, but have softer colors for a "designer" look. The plainest coats belong to royal (species), due to their initial purpose of defending castles. It's rare to see a vibrantly-colored royal.

The most noticeable feature of a (species) is its luxurious mane. Recently, people have been breeding out these manes in their dwarf (species), for a sleeker look, but overall it is agreed the fluffier the mane, the more pleasing it is.

Aside from the mane, (species) can also sport a wide array of tails, ranging from long and fluffy to short and bobbed. Many house (species) have bottle brush tails that help their owners clean cobwebs from the corners.

Face, ear, and leg shape all play different roles in a (species)'s day to day activities. Garden (species) tend to have griffon-like qualities, including beaks and front-leg talons, to help them catch prey. To intimidate foes and look more fierce, a Royal will usually have reptilian snouts. Designer (species) have the "long body, short legs" corgi look, as well as shorter snouts, which both serve zero purpose other than to look cute.

Royals typically sport the longest bodies, helping them wind around corners and cover more area. Common or Garden (species) will occasionally have this trait too, to help them squeeze into rabbit holes.

Other unique traits include teeth size, blood color, and the presence of horns. None of which is rarer among one breed of (species) than another.

For the most part, (species) are solitary creatures who tolerate few others.

    HABITAT -

In the wild, (species) breeds tend to be found more easily in certain environments. For example, to house their large sizes, royals are often found on mountainy terrain, or in caves. They are fiercely protective of their territory, and will attack without hesitation. Occasionally they will be seen outside of their normal hunting grounds, but these are typically drifter (species), recently kicked out of their mother's territory.

Common and garden (species) are found practically everywhere. They enjoy woody areas most of all, and finding a wild garden (species) in your backyard is a delight. Unlike royals, common and garden (species) prefer the company of others, and will often have a small family unit living in a single underground complex.

Dwarf (species) are bred down from commons, and share their docile, friendly traits. However, unlike commons, dwarf (species) are jealous and spiteful animals, and would prefer you not have any other pets, lest they tear up your curtains in a vengeance.

    BEHAVIOR -

With their inclination to protect, it's common for (species) to hoard things. Most hoard random items, but there are often (species) that will hoard a specific item. Common hoard piles include fabric, coins, rocks, and bones. The only limit to a (species)'s hoard is the space in which it can hoard it. Many owners find their (species) has ammassed quite the collection of buttons behind their couch during a spring cleaning.

With the exception of burrow-loving commons, (species) love being clean. They can spend up to an hour grooming their mane alone with their long, forked tongues. Grooming others is a sign of great respect. It also serves as a bonding activity between pet and owner (though please do not use your tongue to groom your (species)).

While (species) prefer to eat meat, they are omnivores, and will chow down on fruits if given the chance. Vegetables and other plants, however, are largely ignored.

(species) are crepuscular, active most often during dawn, dusk, and the occasional time inbetween, though if they are active past twilight it tends to be night-time. This means that you'll often find your (species) napping the day away. It's thought to be because of how thick their coats are they prefer to be active in the cooler hours, to avoid heat stress.

(species) are highly intelligent, and can be taught a whole slew of tricks. Aside from fetch, they're known to be able to understand basic math, can be taught to understand sign language, and make for an excellent herder (provided they're big enough).

oh man how did i not fucking respond.

    I LOVE ADOPTABLES OK

i have a grem2 and a snaptrap right now. I used to have a birdfolk and a fumi dragon.

I'm poor though, and no one buys my designs or adoptables which sucks >:C

Also I'm mean and I won't lie, the face designs on the concepts for that species, along with the body type, remind me of ren faire monsters by hauket :C

    making something original is hard

    Ouija Nani the fuck?

Holy shit I never heard of snap traps before and now I need 50

Also I have to point out ren faires look like they have boar snouts to me, so I can't see your correlation. Body type? Probably, but she didn't draw all the different breeds, just did a fast couple of sketches.

Can someone explain to me how adoptables work in general? I've never really been active on deviantart and I'm a little ??????? on the entire process.

What I have right now is essentially an artist designs a species and a bunch of individuals of that species and then puts them up for adoption (generally against a fee tho if i understood correctly trading seems to be possible too, sometimes?) and when you adopt the little critter you... essentially treat them like an OC? a virtual pet? Is it like neopets except without neopets? I'm confused.

  6. Ouija

    Ouija Nani the fuck?

There's a bunch of different types of adoptables! @IvyLB give me a minute to get back on my laptop and I can write up something more cohesive.

    Ouija Nani the fuck?

Okay, so, as far as adoptables go, there's a good couple of set types.

There are limited-run species/bases with zero backstory to them, where the artist draws a bunch of. I dunno. Cats? We'll use cats for this example. These cats are all on one sheet, have various quirks about them, and have zero story. Essentially they're simply designs cut from the same cloth. The artist may reuse the base a couple more times over but there's nothing special about them, there's no real selling point.

I actually own a deer adopt like this (though I'm looking to sell or trade it if someone wants), so here's the picture and the sister designs as a physical example.

Mine's the one on the right, but the artist didn't make these adopts for very long. There's no story to them (initially) and nothing noticeable beyond how they look.

I also have a "custom design" (also selling so AYYY HMU) that doesn't classify as an adoptable, but many artists will sell single design, unique based creations.

There's no other base that mimics this, there's nothing similar to this one made by the artist, etc.

The third option is species adopts. These adopts are basically the ones @Void and I chattered about. They've got names and (usually) have backstories to them.

When you've got a continuous species you're selling to the public, bases are usually used for convenience? Because it's easier to draw features on a doll than it is to make unique bases all times every time. Maybe sometimes the artist will draw a new or updated base, but for their run-of-the-mill sales they'll draw on paper dolls for convenience.

When I say "run-of-the-mill" I mean it more like these species are able to be bought in flatsales by the public. There are a bunch of different ways to get species adopts, but flatsales and auctions seem to be the most common (if you're buying from the creator). You can also trade or MYO (make-your-own) but that comes with getting approval from the creator as usually in terms of the trading/selling off the adoptable you got the artist has a directory of who owns what adopt. The one I know least info about is "draw to adopt" but at it's core you just...draw the adoptable being showcased and try to adopt it. It's a sort of contest.

The species that have a lot of story to them also have "tiers" of rarity that make some more expensive than others, and often the artist has a handy reference of what's what. A lot of people like to use Weebly for their collective of info (anatomy, history, rarity of traits, etc.). I'm linking a couple that I know of from weebly, and some dA group pages, but

    Gemigon weebly
    Maw Maw weebly
    Fumi dA group
    Grem2 weebly

Basically when you buy the design, you're buying the story behind it as well.

I know for sure furAffinity and deviantArt have a bunch of different adoptable species, and I don't have a Weasyl, but sometimes you'll see adoptables showcased on Tumblr? You have to follow artists who reblog or otherwise sell adoptables in the first place to see them in your blogosphere.

    I hope I covered everything without being too overwhelming, @IvyLB, and let me know if you need clarification anywhere. owo;;

It sounds hella interesting to say the least! So it's sort of a collectibles hobby with an art-producing aspect to it?
Are they generally more animal/pet-like or do people do vaguely humanoid adoptables too? I'm... err... asking for a friend, not because I might... be thinking of converting one of my fictional species into adoptables. *looks off to the side*

  9. Ouija

    Ouija Nani the fuck?

Coynu does Dreamies! And they're INSANELY popular, so yes, humanoid adopts are a thing. I don't personally go for humanoid stuff, so I never look for them, but I can at least say with certainty "eyup"

Here's the dreamies tag on dA

    oh geez these are adorable!
I'd probably do either the tech-fae or the berries. Um i guess i can give a brief rundown?

Tech-fae I have the most on because they are technically from one of my settings, I guess? They are techno-organic hybrids that get reproduced via cloning&genetic engineering. In their original setting they were originally made as a combination science project and a way to make server farms more self-sufficient. Essentially archeologists found DNA of a long extinct humanoid species and wanted to see if they could reintroduce the species via cloning. Turns out a combination of genetic disease and environmental changes made the "Fae" go extinct and so scientists, doing what scientists generally do, start trying to tinker around with the genome to make it so the fae could be viable and survive and even repopulate, ideally! And they did by introducing robotic components into the anatomy to fix the organs that were affected by the genetic defect or are incapable of holding up to the environmental change.
And then they started adding other things, though universally, the only further addition is that their brains can interface with the universe's internet (actually communication is mostly run through using tech-fae brains as servers, really, see above comment on making server farms more self-sufficient.)
In their parent setting their societal standing and realization that humans were stupid enough to put all their information infrastructure into the hands of a marginalized group with zero rights lead to the tech-fae locking humanity out of the internet and phones and everything :P And since a lot of tech-fae are kind of rude rebellious hardasses with a lot of righteous anger and zero filter, the internet is... kid of run exclusively by trolls and channers right now, while humanity is scrambling to not completely fall apart due to suddenly having nothing left (it sucks when all your knowledge is stored on the interwebs and suddenly that's just gone and all that's left is a one finger salute by your former slave.)
There's currently a lot of conflict centered around tech-fae trying to conquer the cloning facilities and humans trying to produce a new batch of tech-fae that will be engineered to be unable to rebel and will hack the internet back open for humans. I don't know if that part of the backstory might not be too sad/dark for adoptables? Idk.
There's several clans based aroud which kinds of robo-limb additions the Tech-Fae have (For example Arachnide-clan members have additional arms, Wasp-Clan members have wings, Naga-clan members have a snake tail instead of a lower body with legs, etc.) and in general they just look cyber-punk-y and cool.)

The berries are just cutesy humanoids with a berry for an eye and a themed color scheme I guess. I could probably write a backstory for them, but that's literally the concept, one of their eyeballs is swapped out for a berry. They're kind of eye-gore-bait probably uwu"

    Ouija Nani the fuck?

I like the idea of tech-fae, but you may end up running out of ideas with the berries. D: I think the overarching goal is to not box yourself in so you don't end up with too-similar of an adopt to sell to another one you made last week.

Adopts that can fit into kink niches also sell decently well...for obvious reasons...........so the berries would be good for that in short term.

    ...R u now.

    What's it look like?

I really need to save and can trade those two designs + the rest in moneys if you'd like them, but depending on how it looks I'm def. tempted to just outright buy it.

they're very pretty, I'm just outright sad I haven't done anything with them :C

    Ouija Nani the fuck?

    Oh nooooo it's cute. ;;

Can you give me a little bit to decide on it? I don't usually indulge in buying adopts (I usually just buy art of my OC) so I'm like (vibrates) over the idea that I'm gonna end up dealing with buyer's remorse.

Gosh, that baby is adorable though

of course! i'm not like gonna make you decide right now. i haven't publicly posted on DA yet about trying to sell, and the person i bought it from gets dibs if they want it back haha

The berries I think would probably be a limited batch of like idk the first ten berries I can think of. With additional options for designing more until I run out of fruits as an on demand option, but really this is ore a trial run to see how well I do with this concept in general. I'm... not a great artist, but I definitly want to try this.
Is trad art done at all or should I try to dust off and relearn my graphic tablet that's pretty much absolute shit?

  18. Void

traditional art adoptables tend to not sell well, as you can't colorpick the colors off of it as easily :C

@IvyLB Dittoing what Void said. Traditional art isn't going to sell, unless your scanner is REALLY good.

    ...So uh. @Void I'll get the Snap Trap if that person doesn't want it back. I asked a couple friends and they urged me to get it. owo;;
