EDITED TO ADD: the discount code COZYKINTSUGI is a thank you to all of you!!!! use it on any order at cozyhearthyarnworks.com

Hi everyone! This thread is for me to collect progress photos and updates for Cozy Hearth Yarn Works - my sis and I's dream job in progress, and my only personal source of income. Here you'll find lots of pictures of yarn and knitting, links to new things we're doing, and a behind-the-scenes view of a fiber arts business. Currently, we sell a limited amount of ready-to-ship knits, a selection of Made to Order knits, and have open slots for custom commissioned knitwear. We also are active pattern designers, with two published patterns (one free) & more in progress, and we're actively developing colorways to hopefully release our first line of hand-dyed yarn this year.

Places you can find out more about us
Questions about how/what/why we do this, feedback on any of our internet presence, and inquiries about commission slots are always welcome!

That is Fiyero! He is one of two shop assistants. :) Fiyero is a Maine Coon whose primary business cat skills are quality testing, while Isaac is a ticked tabby racecar cat who "helps" with everything.

We have... A Lot... of not-quite-right reds.

    IMG_20190426_170008354.jpg

I'm in the throes of trying to develop the two red colorways in our planned yarn line (rua and dearg, roughly fox-red and blood-red) and, as it turns out, it's really tricky to get these nailed down. I'm up to ten not-quite-right skeins piling up, none of them matching each other bc they all have tweaks to try to get closer to the Right colorway. It's a little ridiculous, but hey, at least I'm learning a lot about red-family colors.

The reds are improving! I may have just dyed the perfect proof of the rua recipe - it needs to dry before I can be sure. In the meantime, have a progress photo of a sweater commission (and a bonus shot of the fluffy boy doing quality testing)

Reds remain elusive, so frustratingly so that I had to take a break from dyeing for a while before I tore out all my hair. However, dipping my toes back into the dye pool on the other end of the warm to cool spectrum has been incredibly successful!

    gormsample.jpg

Meet gorm! Most commonly translated as "blue," gorm is the color of deep blue skies, lush vegetation, discolored potatoes, bruises, blue and green eyes, and indigo. Proofing this recipe went shockingly quickly, and we now have repeatable recipes for three of the nine colorways I'd like to have in the initial release - and we're so close to proofs for two more.

    Thank youuuuuuuu!

We have not officially launched our yarn line yet! I'm holding myself to launching sometime in 2019- ideally, like, September, but I lost a month to stress and life problems once already so I haven't made any official announcements. I've been toying with the idea of opening up early sales for Kintsugijin though because I trust you guys to be patient with us still figuring stuff out :)

The skein you're looking at is 100% peruvian highland wool in a medium-tight spun worsted weight. We'd likely charge something around $22 for a 100g skein, and we're currently dyeing skeins individually with plans to do hand matching for large orders. (The two skeins pictured were dyed separately but are nearly identical, because I am Particular like that.) We're planning to offer this colorway line on sock, lace, and bulky bases as well, but we're doing all our inital testing just on this one.

...22$ for 100g skein is price i'm happy with. the only preventative factor i see here is shipping: if shipping it costs half what the yarn costs.. :c

(actually, no, bday is coming up, so i'd probably just opt to buy enough that the shipping price fell under 20% of order price)

which is to say: i want that blue, and those greens in it are actually really pretty (not a dig, to be clear, i'm just really really picky with greens), so if you come out with greens and/or purples in your line up, i'd want them too

Thank you! That is very good to know. Shipping prices is one of those factors we have yet to set - for knit orders we historically have just charged whatever our costs in USPS postage + our relatively inexpensive packing materials are, though, if that helps.

yeah! my gut estimate is that that would put shipping something like this in the ballpark of $10, so

when you come out with this, i'm buying at least three skeins, is what i'm telling you

what’s the stitch definition like? it looks like a fairly soft twist, so i probably shouldn’t be thinking “gansey pattern lap blanket,” but guess what i’m thinking anyway. :P

edit: oh but the reason i asked how many skeins per dye lot is because if i were to treat myself to a sweater i’d need 10 skeins as i am a chumby lad

I asked @asynch about stitch definition, since they are the knitter on our team who does cables, and they said that it's knitting up well for cables in a WIP right now! In my knitting experience, the base is extremely similar to Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool in terms of yarn structure, but the fibers are significantly softer-wearing on skin. I'd be able to wear a sweater made from it (and am planning a sweater project with the Wrong Reds, of which I will also use at least ten skeins probably) but it wouldn't work for people who would only wear Merino next-to-skin.

sounds perfect for gansey work then. just gotta decide sweater or throw before you open for sales!
