I'm basically wondering, how'd it go for the people here who:
    a) wasn't really familiar with seebs before they discovered Kintsugi
    b) introduced to a non-seebs following friend to Kintsugi
    c) was/is at least a bit critical about tumblr sj but still does/believes some of the things that are often criticized in Fine Imported Drama and the like

So yeah, did Kintsugi work for you? Did you question things, either about Kintsugi or tumblr sj, as a result? Did it reinforce your previous opinions or change them? Is it a safe haven or the opposite of one? Do you express your feelings more here? Basically, yeah, how's it working out for you guys?

(Feel free to move thread if necessary. And yes, this is a weird thread for a non-mod/admin to make, I figure, but I'm curious and have anxieties and ulterior motives. Also, trying very much to make this general, not about any specific situation - might be good for other people asking the same questions. Also, I really hope this doesn't get wanky.)

I... am mystified by this definition of "work". I have the same opinions I've always had and was unaware Kintsugi was supposed to be a SJ deconversion center.

well, it's not but in some ways, it can function like that. like, it's not at all why people introduce other people to it, but... i figure if that could be a thing that happens, it's worth asking about.

sorry for being, like, offensive or something! i wasn't thinking at all about how it might read or anything.

also, i think i was using the slang definition of "work," the one in which people ask whether it was a good place, whether it worked in terms of making them happy.

and well, @seebs did say something about how people are sometimes just sjws as a result of the culture on tumblr. like, take them out of the culture, plop them into another one, and they care about stuff like nuance more. so yeah, also thinking of that.

I assumed work meant "Did the person settle into the forum without huge drama and/or feel comfortable eventually." You know did the referal itself work out.

yes, thank you, that was more what i was going for. the questions about viewpoints and everything weren't necessarily an obligatory part of the stuff involved in it "working." also i basically repeated the same question at the start and the end, for some reason.

I would point out that I think a lot of what makes tumblr toxic is pretty much impossible to sustain in an environment that tries to commit to listening to people, although that doesn't really make us immune, because it's easy enough for people to slip into doing that again anyway. Which has happened to me any number of times.

Yeah, that's how I was parsing it, too. "working out" in the general sense, not necessarily referring back to the preceding questions.

As for said questions, I think I may be a bit closer to the "sjw baseline" of opinion than a lot of people here. This is related to the thing I've talked about here before about my general dislike for the "going too far" model of sjw shittyness -- less abusive and toxic does not necessarily imply less (or more, for that matter) radical political opinions.

My biggest worry coming in was that Fine Imported Drama would become an echo-chamber wankfest, because I've seen too many places dedicated to critiquing tumblr-style sj that have turned into "basically the same damn thing, but with boolean not applied to all the political positions," but that doesn't seem to have happened yet. I could stand a bit more diversity of opinion and/or devil's advocacy, but selection biases are what they are, and there do seem to be a few interesting debates going on in there.

yeah. that's basically the idea. so, like, if Kintsugi tried to just be a SJW Conversion Center, it wouldn't work out. it would lose the good things about it, probably. like yeah, i think of Kintsugi as the Refuge From The Blue Hell Cult I Accidentally Joined and that does colour how i think of it a bit, probably in not so good ways. but yeah... sorry everyone for being so misleading!

I am all for variety of opinions. I also note that on tumblr it's easy for people to conclude that I oppose a position when in fact I oppose their methodology; for instance, see the lovely lady convinced that I am opposed to religious freedoms. Er. What.

A lot of the time, apart from the "therefore we should be mean to people and that's fine" part, I agree with the positions people are advocating for, I just think they've chosen a plan of advocacy that won't work.

But yeah, I wouldn't at all mind if there were a few more people who held a broader range of views, because magic happens when people who disagree encounter each other in a context which encourages them to be curious instead of mad about their disagreements.

    You're fine, I think.

Oh yeah, that's a fair point, too. I wonder if that's a halo-effect kinda thing, or maybe an autistic/allistic communication problem.
Parsing criticism of part, especially detailed "nit-picky" criticism, as criticism of the whole, at least without appropriate in-group or "I agree, but..." markers.

haha, yeah, i've definitely saw that. and felt it. like sometimes people (in general) say stuff that's not wrong or not entirely wrong or makes sense given their experience and yet... could be done in a way that works better.

i sure hope so. i sure hope so. :D:D:D

I´m a bit on the other side of things where I have a hard time considering a lot of sjw stuff rationally because I got burned by a run in with sjws. and retrospect, not even all that nasty ones, they were just kind of a agressive, but it was enough to mess with my brain.
Only good result, I am sceptical of anyone who claims that theres an entire group of people it´s ok to be mean to.

i have a bit of that. i've stopped reblogging most sj-type posts as a result, simply 'cause i'm worried that there's some shit underneath or that they are incorrect. or that people will lambast me for my opinions.

Yeah, the bad side is that my, generally silent and hidden gut reaction to any kind of activism message is "Fuck all the way off and leave me alone." And I´m not an active participant in anything for that reason. (Also cause of low spoon levels, but that´s separate.)

For what it's worth, my usual identity has my RealName (tm) attached to it in many, many places, so I just... don't have political opinions there.

That is a very sensible thing to do in such a case, yes.
