I just remembered-if you have only two wings and no halteres (not a typo), steering is extremely difficult with no tail.
So birdy people may get a birdy tail...you'll have to cut holes in all your trousers and underwear!

    I am....surprisingly okay with this.
but if anyone touches my tail I will screech. loudly.

Fliers would also likely have required secondary powers of either air control letting them increase their effective lift, or inertia manipulation letting them decrease their effective weight and help manage g-forces. That, or their wings would be pushing against magic as well as air, making the air moving over them a bonus-that would allow them to fly, clumsily, in vacuum! At least until they ran out of breathing air. I've also seen a flier with fire powers using those fire powers for Instant Thermal!
These secondary powers, if present, wouldn't have to be voluntary-they might only be useable as part of flying, and ONLY to fly.

Otherwise they'd have to have enormous wings and do mostly gliding.

Keep in mind, i think outside of the shard is a very low to no gravity environment. You wouldn't need very much lift to get around, except when you're on the shard itself.

  5. Wingyl

    Wingyl Allegedly Magic

True! That could possibly also result in shenanigans, like somebody flying too far from a shard and suddenly they're going UP. a LOT.

well, they could still push themselves down, but it would essentially be flying upside down every other stroke unless we assume that they've got a completely different musculature arrangement.

[Edit:] altered a bit, will fix more when more concious.

A lot of the lift generated by a wing is due to the angle of the wing-if the trailing edge is down with the leading edge up, the wing is pushed up (and the wing's owner with it), and if the leading edge is down with the trailing edge up, then the wing is pushed down!

This is actually something you can test if you are a passenger in a car. Roll the window down and stick you hand a little into the air outside. Just a little. Then tilt it back an forth!
Do not do this if the car is not on a road with lots of space on the side you're sticking your hand out. You do not want to hit a sign.

I do know how birds work. I'm not wording very well right now because i'm tired, I'll explain it tomorrow some time.

Also: This is why i'd think of the flying problem, look at these pigeons. its not how wings work, its how the muscles are used to functioning and how they've grown to function over time. That last part wouldn't be too much of an issue for people just growing wings, but the designed for gravity part might make some of flying harder for them. Also, hollow bones wouldn't necessarily be needed if we assume zero gravity outside of the shards - you just wouldn't be able to fly on the shards.

I demand that flight capabilities be available to me everywhere
plus hollow bones is one of the drawbacks and I feel like it's important

I'm just catching up on this thread and basically I will wind up with a freaking noah's ark shard if you let me.

(I totally found a zoo and got everyone to calm their tits enough to let some of them free onto a suitably warm and good enviroment shard. But there's a pair of male hyenas as well as my pet cats, a particularly enamoured ostrich and a okapi. I didn't ask them to come and the ostrich keeps wanting to protect me from the hyenas and the hyenas keep wanting to bite the ostrich just for fun. The okapi is very confused and just wants to stay with me because I am friendly and safe and familiar.)

Somewhere there is a very large shard with lots of displaced wildlife doing as well as they can XD

Scanning for events. (1) event queued for review. (0) alarms.

Data returned from <classified>. Data analysis suggests only 0.052% margin of error. Alarm condition fulfilled.

    >WARNING: ALL NOAA PERSONNEL<

    >A seismological event of significance (10) has been detected. This event is expected to occur within the next 12 to 24 hours. Margin of error is calculated to be within 0.052%. As a reminder, all alarms with a margin of error less than 5% and significance (4) or above must be immediately shared with the President of the United States.<

    >Alarm condition (10) signifies a possibly apocalyptic event occurring. This alarm condition should never be dismissed without prior consultation with the President to ensure that there is not an emergency. If an alarm with significance (10) is detected and within a 1% error margin, the Emergency Alert System is activated immediately, telling citizens to take cover and prepare for anything and everything that comes after.<

    > At this time, the NOAA bunker has been unlocked. It can hold up to five hundred (500) personnel, and is supplied with survival equipment. If a significance (10) event does occur, then you must be prepared for anything. Please refer to your NOAA Employee’s Guidebook for further information.<

    >DO NOT USE YOUR TELEPHONE AT THIS TIME. THIS IS A NATIONAL EMERGENCY.<

    [End of log file.]

[The following is camera footage, stored on the computer, of the room. Several personnel are reclining in their chairs or drinking coffee.]

<Employee, identified from tag as Gabe>: You know, I’m retiring tomorrow. In an office like this, that’s a bad omen. Something bad always happens to the person retiring soon.

<Employee 2, identified from tag as Austin>: Oh, come on Gabe. This isn’t some badly-written piece of writing. You know that isn’t how it wor--

[Flashing green lights on computer distract him. The lights move around the side, eventually converging at a single point, where they flash yellow for a moment before every light on the side becomes solid red. SAME header tones reverberate throughout the building, and alarm lights on the ceiling begin to flash. Metallic thunks can also be heard, like bulkheads closing. Austin runs over to the computer and reads the green-on-black text pictured there.]

Austin: Well, I’ll be damned. You might die a day before your retirement after all.

[Gabe looks triumphant at this, but then his expression fades into something more serious as he realizes what Austin said.]

    Gabe: Read it to me.

Austin: *ahem.* Warning. All NOAA Personnel. A seismological event of significance 10--

    [Gabe spits out his coffee.]

Gabe: 10?! It never goes higher than 3 at most!

    Austin: Shush.

[Austin continues to silently read the page.]

Austin: You’ve got to be shitting me.

    Gabe: What? What is it?

[Austin pulls up a chart of data on the screen. Gabe reads it and somehow manages to spit out his coffee again.]

Gabe: ...Oh. *small silence* I’m never going to see my family again, am I?
Austin: I don’t think so. The building seals off above significance 6.

Gabe: Well, if I’m going to die today, I’m going to do my duty to my country first.

[Gabe forwards the data to Washington.]

Gabe: Now what was that about a bunker?

[The two men flee from the room. Words continue to scroll on the screen, and eventually, the world’s seismologists work together and publish one of the shortest papers ever written.]

We, the scientists of Earth, have analyzed the data gathered by NOAA, and come to a chilling conclusion. The crust of the Earth has weakened to the point where magma bursts will push the continental plates out of the planet. The cause of this weakening is unknown, and it may never be found out. The world is about to end. There isn’t anything that can be done at this point except be home with those you love. Go spend your last day on the Earth with them.

fair but like. i hate restarting old RPGs, mostly because it means i have to backread my own writing and what i wrote for me was...not great, iirc.

Suggestion: since Technicality doesn't want to deal with re-reading their old writing, and I think part of what caused the RP thread to crash was the difficulty of trying to figure out how to interact with a first-person narrative post (idk about anyone else, but this is definitely what threw a wrench into things for me), and the IC thread is three pages deep in the archives now...

why don't we just scratch and start over anyways?

We can keep any of the lore that Technicality's cool with us using, and go with the concepts that already got brainstormed, and start a new IC thread that has posts with a third-person perspective.
