Please read the manga if you can. Itagaki's art is some real good shit. She's got a wonderful understanding of how to use her medium to convey moods and time and it is just. It's some of the best comics as a medium shit I've seen out of manga.

Just discovered “Cells at Work!” on Netflix. This show is so fucking creative. A red blood cell gets lost on her way back to the lungs after a bacterial attack in the first episode, “Pneumococcus!”, and with the help of a white blood cell they face down the last invading pneumococcus bacterium. Lighthearted workplace action adventure. I’m gonna laugh forever at people yelling about epithelial cells, like that’s a perfectly normal thing to shout during a disaster, and at how they got rid of the pneumococcus. Especially that. It was brilliant.

it makes me feel both a little better about my stupid immune system -- it's just overzealous about trying to keep me safe -- and also very bad for all the minor mischiefs I manage to do to myself because those poor cells.

also i feel bad for this poor person that they're a part of -- at least in the manga, they had all sorts of shit happen to them in a relatively short time frame (considering the life of an RBC is, what, 6 months at most?), everything from food poisoning to having an accident bad enough that they needed a blood transfusion, if i remember correctly

S2 of One Punch Man is on Hulu and it reminded me to check if the webcomic had more English translations up. God, I love Saitama and his roundabout way of gathering friends.

A Sister's All You Need was.. actually funny? It's trashy and kind of over the top but the base of the story is very good? Be prepared for a lot of fan service and inappropriate loli jokes, usually from the 18 year old chick but like. Aside from that, it's about light novel authors and a bit about the industry and in general was very amusing. I might even rewatch it in the future.
tldr: if you want some entertaining garbage, go for it, it's like eating an entire bag of potato chips in one sitting.

after watch #3 (one personal, and one each for two friends who wanted to see it) of Houseki no Kuni/Land of the Lustrous, I can say that I 100% recommend it to anyone.

    heads up for
tons of gem person 'gore', a lot of ptsd, a lot of amputation of gem limbs, and a lot of crazy shit. the manga's even wilder tho.

does anyone else have an Anilist? it's a really good organizational site, and i think you can import from the other big site? I've just been adding to my lists every time something sounds neat or I remember I've watched it, and I can even keep track of rewatches by episode if I wanna. I remember where I left off on a series I haven't touched in months thanks to this site.

here's mine! the anime list is the side I've focused on more, I should fill in the manga side eventually..

    https://anilist.co/user/TheMockingCrows/animelist

eta: it also gives you a breakdown of genres you have on your lists, a calendar so you can track when you've watched things most, and a lot of charts on their stats page. c:

trying to watch Hands Off Eizouken and.. it's interesting? It's not really catching my interest though. Nothing's pulling me to watch the next episode to see what happens. It's pretty though, I'll def give it that, and it's being very original in its style. But nothing's really grabbing my attention and making me excited to hit Next which is kind of a shame.

Been reading through Bleach. On volume 20 right now. I have remembered now why I abandoned Bleach proper and also ichiruki for nothing but yorusoi and more yorusoi.

the only way soifon could get more yuri is if she was a fucking japanese schoolgirl going to a prestigious all girls catholic school.

Interspecies Reviwers is. ....Porn. It's a straight up tits and ass sex show. And it's funny as shit to me. The fact they put so much extra effort into the little scenes when they do the ratings makes me laugh a lot, and the little jokes like the unnatural light, and the difference between the censored and uncensored version, AND THE MAYO SCENE just. It's so silly. It's not trying to be anything but the ecchi piece of shit it is, and I am grateful for it. It wanted to be a dumb sexy show with monsters and boobs and hentai tropes and voila, it did it.

8/10, will be watching again and wanna read the manga lmfao.

i really fucking like bleach still apparently and wrote this giant fucking ass thing about why soifon is so appealing to yuri fans:

Anyway now that class is over I am bored and free and feel like talking about why yorusoi is so interesting for someone who consumed yuri and s by the truckload. So the thing with Soifon’s deal with yuri is that the tragic backstory portion of it that we get to see falls very in line with a lot of yuri tropes. We have an adoring junior who is wowed by her seemingly godlike senior. Said senior tutors her and is impressed by things regarding her. There’s also that fun sort of playing with the hierarchy that we see in things like Yagakimi regarding names and titles.

This portion of things would be the entire bulk of a story in the yuri genre. Like if one were to take these two in particular and go ‘I am going to make a yuri manga’ this would be the most traditional thing to make into The Story. We’d take that entire flashback and stretch it out in a volume or two and call it a day when Yoruichi fucks off to go do some shit. Maybe we’d get like one chapter after the fact covering like how Soifon is holding up after the fact, assuming we were focused on her perspective. Which, given the works coming out around that time in yuri, we probably would be. Either way a lot of works tended to end after this point and not really deal with anything after it very much.

Yorusoi is fun though as someone immersed in The Genre because yorusoi takes all that shit and relegates it to a flashback. What would normally be the main course is instead just a flashback that provides context to what we are dealing with in the now with Bleach. And that in the now is Very Interesting. Because Soifon is so fucking pissed.

It reminds me in a fashion of one of the characters in Junsui Adolescence. Basically she’s a teacher who, as a highschooler, had been dating one of her female teachers. Upon graduation however she was dumped by said teacher because it was now time to grow up. A very classic S story. Except while most of those would just end there we instead get to see this character in the aftermath of an S story. And she is a bitter and unhappy woman who basically has no belief in the chance of relationships between women working. Because they’re something you ‘grow out of’ and thus you are inevitably going to be burned. She’s contrasted with the current seeming S tragedy in motion because said seeming tragedy manages to grow up out of being S into being yuri that survives post-graduation.

What’s fun about this character is that…We get to see the aftermath of what is often the meat of a story. And the aftermath in her case is not good. She’s bitter, she’s unhappy. What was supposed to be a lesson that would help her grow into adulthood has actually just stunted her growth. She never actually got over the relationship from before and is defining her sense of self around this abandonment. Which is a very different sort than Soifon’s but the point is they’re both what could be viewed as the aftermaths of standard S stories.

And like that teacher, in the case of Soifon the aftermath isn’t very good. Her identity and will to improve are very tied up in the resentment and confusion at having been seemingly abandoned by someone who, by her own admission, she worshiped. A good bulk of her dialogue during their fight is based around her being assured that she has improved past Yoruichi. That she is better than her in every conceivable way possible. You had one title. I have two. You had this many men. I have this many more men. You had this skill others knew of. I have created this one that no one knows of. She never actually got over her adoration of Yoruichi at all.

Which is why she can’t beat her. She is stuck comparing herself and gauging her progress based off a century’s old impression of someone she idolized to an absurd degree. We’re even told later on that adoration is the furthest thing from understanding. By a shitlord, yes, but when we look at their fight it does appear to be true. Soifon thought she knew Yoruichi. And she didn’t. She did not understand and her lack of understanding is why she just kind of crumples when she sees the true form of the technique she thought she was pioneering.

Because at that point everything she built up has failed her. Everything she thought she knew turned out to be false. And in the end she is left with the one central driving lack of understanding that has controlled her entire life up to this point. Which is ‘Why didn’t she take me with her?’

And that’s fascinating and a thing we wouldn’t get to see in a yuri story, even a serial one. Because we’d be stuck in Soifon’s damned flashback more than likely. Instead we get to see this neat thing that is the aftermath of the abandonment. So when you are surrounded by work after work that is just the like adoration until graduation story over and over again, why wouldn’t something that rushes through all that in like four pages to the present day not be The Most Exciting Shit?

So I have made it portions of Bleach I've not read or watched. I am now 23 volumes into the series. I do kind of wish we had a bit more breathing room between the two arcs, but now that things have gotten rolling again proper and Kubo has dumped another 50 characters into my lap to all have fights going on back to back to back I am pleased again.

also that peptalk with orihime and rangiku was simultaneously the straightest and gayest thing i have ever seen. it is kind of amazing. i will frame this in my office and show it to people.

RUKIA'S MOTHERFUCKING ZANPAKUTO THOUGH AND FUCKING MADARAME GOING BALLS OUT AND JUST FUCK LOOK IT'S THAT GRIMMJOW MOTHERFUCKER OFMDGFHHDFSDFAG

So yes anyways Bleach is one of the single most fun shonen battle manga experiences I've had so far.

It's really fun, and I really liked reading it. I do think it's done best in archive, though. The chapters flow into each other really well in a way that makes for pretty great continuous reading, but at a few points felt like it fell apart when I was reading it serially. The pacing issues that exist week-to-week get... not completely, but largely smoothed out when you can barrel through it, I guess?

I dunno, but Kubo does what Kubo does well, and I hope you enjoy the rest of it!

Yeah it's got this nice rolling pace that makes it hard to go 'I am going to stop here.' Especially in the Soul Society arc. Once the Seireitei was broken into the fights basically started and did not stop until the very end of the arc. If someone was out of commission then that's fine because there's another like 20 people running around and picking fights with one another. So we can switch the channel over to them for a bit. The appearance of the Arrancar in the next arc provides that kind of roll too. Though in a shorter span of time.

Kubo's real good at maintaining a relentless and consistently entertaining pace. By making use of the fact that his casts are fuckhuge.

That quality was also used really well I feel like for the Aizen reveal in the Soul Society arc. As I've already been through it I know what happens, but it's still really nice how little you actually think about the little details that make Aizen seem suspicious. There's plenty out there too. A lot of them. But you're so much more likely to tunnel vision onto Gin alone and you're so focused on the save Rukia plot thread that those little bits just kind of get lost in the shuffle. We don't think about the fact that the autospy was weird because fuck that was like twenty chapters ago and someone's got their sword out and is doing the anime sword explanation speech thing while someone else goes MASAKA and stands there very politely.
