I'm just starting Story of Seasons, and I've played a few others in the series and they're one of my top brain-happy games, so I wanted to put somewhere to scream either in frustration or glee as i go along with this new venture, and to let others talk about the ups and downs of running a farm and animals around a bunch of nutty villagers.

Giorgio is a literal anime. Complete with the rose background and sweatdrops.

Eda looks like the little old lady who'd be growing illicit plants in her back yard and condensing it into tea strong enough to knock you loopy for a week on end.. but drinks it like a chain smoker smokes just because.

WHAT IS ELISE'S DAMAGE, I KNOW SHE'S A MARRIAGE PROSPECT IF YOU PLAY AS A DUDE, AND I DIG HER DESIGN BUT. BITCH BE A WALKING ANIME.

eta 2: The bitch has now also nearly run me down with a thoroughbred horse.

Dr. Marian and all the Maryam clan would probably be buddies. Even with the hypodermic earrings, she's stylin'. :O

I realize I should be adding images while I scream so there are faces with these words. So I shall do so now.

So far, I've realized I can only hound two of the three main husbandos on my list as the third doesn't show up till winter of the first year.

Raeger reminds me of Makoto from Free! though I've never watched it. He's an absolute sweetheart, excellent cook, very straight forward and sweet. Considering my farmgirl could pick him up and carry him over her head like he was nothing (super strong farmer headcanons GO!) it'd be fucking adorable to think of him trying to make cakes or something only to be abducted and toted off for a break because while cooking is fun, remembering to eat is good too.

Klaus is.. interesting. Because it's so early in the game I've not gotten much on him beyond the wiki info, but he's always gentlemanly and kind. Always seems concerned about my characters well being. He works a a perfumer and his home looks fucking rad, if I do say so myself.

Nadi, or Sir Not-Appearing-Till-Winter-Like-The-Tsundere-Fuck-He-Is is my top pick still. I've got no idea how successful that attempted pick will be right off the bat but. WE SHALL SEE. N-not that he'd admit to it. B-baka.

Now on the "Not Making Outright Attempt For At This Time" list.
Fritz is a neighboring farmer. Got nothing against the guy. He's just.. really vanilla to me. Energetic as hell and great with animals, but vanilla. Didn't dig that he was my first forced friend, but the fact you go swimming is kind of cute and his spunk is nice? Do Not Want as husbando though, he'd get on my nerves.
Shy Florist Husband has already been successfully banged in the last game he appeared in, and thus will not be attempted till probably dead last on this one, precious though he may be.
I was surprised how much I like Mistel? He's fucking precious, extremely considerate and in general fun to talk to at the antique shop. ...Also bonus, his sister (able to be dated if playing as a guy) is gorgeous as all hell.
He's not in my top list, but once I reach a point where I'd be going to this list, he'd be at the top.

ITS NAME IS WOOFIO, AND IT FUCKING TERRIFIES ME FOR SOME REASON? LIKE. IT'S A CUTE MASCOT DESIGN BUT IT'S ALSO REALLY CREEPY TO SEE IT MOVE AND GET DISPLEASED.

well i know who my pick would be too that is a very pretty character design
In fact i think i like the general design aesthetic a lot!
I'm occassionally falling into the harvest moon pit (like that on month a year where i suddenly start building organisational tables and shit for maximum productivity and building schedules for my fucking turnip growth cycles) but I might need another cutesy farm game bc Harvest Moon DS is too taunting with its continued references that its NOT friends of mineral town and i can't even go visit my old waifus.
So uh... mechanically how is Story of Seasons different? also which consoles is it available on bc i only have a Nintendo DS rn not even 3DS

  11. TheMockingCrows

    TheMockingCrows Resident Bisexual Lich

It's a 3DS game sadly, but the mechanics are quite interesting! For one, I was able to choose the color of my characters skin, hair, and eyes. Four skin colors from albino pale to the same tone as Nadi. Hair tones range from some realistic to full on anime, same with eyes (I was surprised to see white eyes on there!) I wound up going albino design with some red eyes and white hair for this run.

The features are -very- extensive imo, compared to the last game. There's even two difficulties to choose from, depending on how laid back you want to be! I'll toss them under a spoiler because they're bulky when ripped from the wiki but they're the fastest way to explain things ahaha.

    • You can change your character's hairstyle and color, eye color, skin color, face, the hat, your glasses (if wearing), outfit, and up to three accessories (rings, earrings, necklaces).
    • The object placement system is also in this version, both for your farm and for the town itself, managing the layout and aesthetic feel of Oak Tree Town. You can craft objects with the work table in the house. Crafting materials can be bought, found on the ground, or in the mining area of the safari. You can also decorate and customize the interior of your house not only with wallpaper and flooring, but object design and placement such as cabinets, beds, decorations, etc.
    • There is a wildlife safari housing a variety of exotic animals such as monkeys and parrots. The safari can be toured by the other villagers, and the amount of G earned per person will be received after the tour is over; a minimum 400 G fee plus 10 G for every type of animal you have unlocked. There are items that can only be found within the safari, and the mine is also located here. Animals can be unlocked after earning a certain amount of Customer Points with the other country vendors.
    • The game is centered around the other lands in the game. The countries have specialty trades that you can buy from, and they will buy preferred items from you such as animals and clothing accessories There is a Trade Depot set up in the game where all of the in-game countries will visit and set up store. Interacting with the other in-game countries will unlock new things. The Trade Depot will also have requests from countries (similar to the message boards in Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns).
      • Later in the game, you can get your very own shop to own, in which you can set different themes and get put in items to sell to potential customers, it is all an automatic process you only need to go to collect your money, you can sell items at full or half price. The themes are: Ranch Store, General Store, Restaurant, Bakery, Candy Store, Juice Stand, Tailor's Shop, Fish Store, Floral Shop, Vegetable Shop, Home Decor Shop, Antique Shop, and Tchotchke Shop. Each theme changes the look of the shop to suit the theme.
    • Besides the wildlife safari, the new animals are the Angora Rabbit you can care for on your farm, the Zebu cow, a camel (produces hair), goat, and the new brown Araucana chicken that lays high quality eggs. Normal sheep, white chickens, silkie chickens, hair toupe cows from A New Beginning, white alpaca, suffolk sheep, jersey cow, and llama have returned.
    • Dogs, cats, and horses as pets are now available. You can ride the horse, the dog herds your livestock animals, and a cat will find items for you.
    • Crops are planted in a 3x3 square. Sowing, watering, and harvesting can now be done to the entire 3x3 field instead of one at a time, which allows you to care for more fields in less time.
    • MAQL collaborated with Nintendo to put Super Mario-themed crops into the game. You can grow the Super Mushroom, the Fire Flower, and the Super Star on your farm. These crops have special benefits. The fire flower clears your fields of dead crops and increases the star rank, and the super star increases the amount of time a crop stays fresh. The super mushroom makes crops and trees grow by two growth stages. They are randomly sold by Wheat Country as Mystery Seeds for 1000 G.
    • The game has WiFi/internet connectivity and 3DS StreetPass with other players. With the StreetPass, the people you SP data with will become characters in your game, and you can see their data profile information (character name, farm name, year, portrait, shipping profit, etc). You can also WiFi connect with other players to visit their farms and tend to their crops and animals. You also can trade items.
    • You can go fishing with a fishing pole, or you can go swimming off of the river docks to catch fish and other items in the water.
    • This game is unique from others where it gives the option of "difficulties," Seedling and Original mode. Seedling mode allows new players (or veteran players who want an easier experience) to unlock certain things quicker. In seedling mode things will be cheaper, countries have fewer requirements to unlock, etc. Alternately, Original mode, steps up the difficulty, with more expensive items, and harder requirements to unlock countries.

Otherwise I'm enjoying the map system a lot. You can tap the screen a few times and it'll show where everyone is locally, what building is what, and where people are in the full map. Great for someone like me who gets lost easily in games sometimes. You can also jump about like a fool, which is entertaining to me for my own reasons hahaha. Traders are also the only ones who buy things from you, locals don't want to take your stuff unless its in trade and they're not there every day, but are easy to track. I was surprised that you don't start out with a kitchen, you have to MAKE IT YOURSELF. ..and even then it doesn't come with a fridge till you make it! But highly custom farm and character, pretty art and music and fairly laid back approach.. I'm already having a ball, I regret not having brain focus enough to play it till now.

It's a pretty basic one admittedly, but like. There's even a gift wrapping station?? To make things pretty. And I'm glad the Maker Sheds are still a thing, they were pretty handy in the last game and seem to be expanded on. :D

even a basic crafting system gives me way more idk satisfaction than the stupid tele-shopping network in HVDS. And the fact that I can't even walk into the stores anymore, no i have to do everything by phone, because they thought it was clever to set DS in a valley right next to Mineral Town so you literally call the characters you'd rather be hanging out with to sell you stuff and you can't even befriend them. Though HVDS appeals to my micro-managing tendencies with the harvest elves a lot... idk i'm bitter, FOMT's internal battery is dead so the thing won't save anymore and i have an emotional problem with games reminding me at every turn that i could be playing a better version of them if i hadn't played that game to literal cartridge-death.

Oh man that is definitely rough. D: The only callback to the last game is that they took the most popular husbando and waifu and sent them to this game with altered names but proper village name. I think they did that with the last game as well actually? I remember that the mailman was a character in a former game but i don't think he was dateable.. Ah. The wiki says Dirk was from a game called Grand Bazaar, but I never played that one so I didn't recognize him and have callback feels.

The early Harvest Moon games were hard for me to get into because I kept getting terribly lost.. the first one i could play/understand easily enough was Save The Homeland, I think, over on the ps2.

i think they wanted to have the very popular characters of MT in the game so that people would be drawn to it. All the waifus from FOMT come over to the valley for the various holidays and festivals and what not, depending on their interests and there are a few characters in the valley who spend parts of their week over in Mineral Town, which is probably the only reason there is a literal street you could walk down to go there, if it weren't for one of the stupid harvest elves stopping your from it with a cut scene going 'You have a lot to do don't go slacking off now D:'
DUDE maybe I wanna personally pick my chickens at Popuri's farm you ever thought of that? Phone ordering livestock ain't smart!
Maybe i think i should pay Gray a visit from time to time so he won't be such an antisocial dickbag now that he's running the smithery on his own.
Maybe i'm just really attached to the old game and as cute as the waifu prospects in DS are (very cute. Have been married to the mermaid once and am currently hitting on the barkeeper, 10/10 would rec, she's super adorable) the other characters are almost painfully bland and uninvolved, ESPECIALLY because none of them are shop keepers or anything so you don't even start interacting with them in any organic way, you have to specifically decide 'I am going to befriend that dude now, if they want to or not.' None of them are like festival organizers or anything either.
I like the many buildings and the basements/cellar stuff. I like the mini game with petting and brushing the animals with the touchscreen. I really love the fruit trees and the item menu being so easy to use.
I don't like the fact that the cat seems to just be there and do nothing, that the dog doesn't do anything much either, except fetch a ball you throw it occassionally and i ESPECIALLY don't like the fact taht they took out both the frisbee contest for your dog and the horse race for your horse bc i totally invested hours of training into those with FOMT and the horse has almost zero functionality in DS except a quick-sell possibility no one tells you about with its saddle bags.
DS also makes it almost impossible to have animals that produce good products because they want to push the touch screen functionality i guess? which kinda does away with the regular 'more hearts = bigger produce' formula harvest moon had going but technically taht still applies hearts just take for fucking EVER to build up. Which means chickens and ducks are almost useless because they will probably NEVER produce good quality things and their production quality is only passed on to descendants if they win a contest (which no one tells you either btw, at least not in the German version which cut three of the help/tutorial tv networks for NO REASON WHATSOEVER), so chicken basically never produce better eggs than small and you are stuck with that.
ALSO farmer has literally zero stamina in HMDS, its as if the dude keels over from lifting a stick wtf

    oops i ranted
but yeah HMDS put in a few neat features but took almost all the things i really enjoyed most about FOMT out and you can't even pick gender and appearance fo your farmer (you can pick gender in the newer HM games)
sooooo that's mostly why i'd like a new farm game bc i need to stop holding all Harvest Moon games to the Mineral Town Standard (tm)
Friends Of Mineral Town is literally the best Harvest Moon Game ever released and i highly doubt anything but a straight rerelease with the new inventory system would make me happy.

I also just remembered Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon and its sequels exist too, has anyone got experience with those? i was thinking that might be something i could like and those three all came out for the DS

Game progress continues steadily along, with the discovery of additional farming areas that you can compete for. I've been entering every competition despite knowing I won't win, if only to be seen and to get my feet wet. Knocked up my cow as well instead of buying another, though admittedly I'm a bit sad that I can't interact with said cow till the baby comes. :/ Not even to brush her. She's secluded in a maternity area in the barn.. ah well. bonding with the horse instead, at least.

Was also allowed to start decorating IN THE TOWN. I wasn't aware you'd get to customize parts of the town decor as well! So yay, places to put my stone benches. :D Racking up some slow money as well by making use of a fish hatchery and the most expensive fish I had at the time.

Also: the crop judge is fucking precious. Matsuba? Never change.

@IvyLB there are reasonable emulator setups for fomt, if you'd be interested in trying to play it that way. i've never tried this myself but one of my friends (yo @TrillianAri) has and it apparently works quite well.
