STAND BY FOR A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

[A shuffling noise can be heard.]

The President: Good evening, ladies and gentlem--

[In the background, there's a burst of noise.]

President: What the [expletive] was that?

[There's some panicked murmuring of an explanation.]

    President: Huh. Okay. Well, I--

[A much louder burst of noise.]

President: [to side] How long do we have?

    [Hushed murmuring.]

    President: Well then.

[The sound of a beer bottle cracking open can be heard, as well as the creaking of a chair leaning back.]

President: This is the end of the world.

[A final burst of noise is heard, followed by a brief burst of static, and then an endless tone plays.]

((that noise is like immediately grating and i listened to the whole file for...some...reason. it was horrible and yet i just couldn't bring myself to pause it. it's impossible to ignore and yet you just cannot bring yourself to turn it off. whoever made that the emergency alert signal was really good at that bit of their job.))

[Over the radio, the never-ending alert tone cuts to static, and then to quiet, with some small noises. It sounds like someone's fiddling with machinery.]
    ????: Hello?
[In the background, a calm, synthetic voice saying "Please stand by for more information" speaks.]
????: Oh jeez, they never sent the end-of-message...
[More shuffling, clicking noises. The voice cuts off abruptly.]
????: There we go. Uh. Okay.
[The voice on the other end clears his throat.]
????: If...if anyone else is still alive out there...then welcome, I guess, to the post-apocalypse. I'm...looking out at where our planet used to be, and there doesn't seem to be anything there anymore, except a ball of molten metal. Something must have blown the crust of our planet straight off.
    [Brief silence.]
????: Oh! I'm, uh. I'm a comms technician at the White House. Making sure that everything worked. The building seems to mostly be intact, albeit...we seem to be quite a bit above what used to be Earth. A few other people are here with me, and we're trying to get a sense of what happened.
????: The machinery wasn't supposed to work this way. I'll try to set up an actual station. Until then...

    BROADCAST RECORD FROM 1/31/18
    [Shuffling]
????: Good morning, survivors. It's...it's about 10 AM right now. And, judging from the activity on the, uh, little bits of land around me, quite a lot of you seem to have survived yesterday. At least, the people in the area around the White House. So that's good.
    [Silence for a moment.]
????: So, uh...with the equipment we have, the scientists that were here yesterday have done some research. We're not quite sure what happened--we're still looking into that--but it seems that the air around these bits of land is breathable. Outside, we're not sure, but it seems to be a very thin layer of oxygen.
????: In addition to that, um, it seems like this shard specifically has been catapulted into the Van Allen radiation belt. It doesn't seem to be causing radiation poisoning yet, but it's possible nothing's set in yet. There's also something radiating from what used to be Earth...we have no idea what it is yet, none of our equipment knows what it is. Seems like more radiation, but of a variety never observed before.
    [More silence.]
????: That's...that's all for this morning's news. Coming up, Skeeter Davis with "The End of the World."
    [Music plays.]

    BROADCAST RECORD FROM 1/31/18
[The radio, which had been playing some music, shuts off. Someone clears their throat.]
    ????: Okay, new developments...
[There's a shuffling noise and someone talking quickly off-mic.]
????: Apparently the radiation from the Van Allen belt, combined with...whatever's coming off the planet, is causing changes in our DNA. Now, normally that's bad, because that's basically radiation poisoning. But everyone here is saying that the changes seem almost...targeted, like it's altering specific parts of our DNA for whatever purpose. I don't know what that purpose is, but it's n--
    [The voice cuts off.]
    ????: (to side) What?
    [Shuffling]
    ????: I feel fine, I have no idea what you're t--OW!
[There's a flurry of noise. It sounds like someone collapsed onto the ground.]
????: Ow, my back...um, what the fuck?!
[A gasp, followed by a fluttering sound.]
????: (to side) Okay, holy shit. Um. Uh. Okay. I...um. Wow. Okay. Uhhhhh....
    [There's heavy breathing.]
????: (to side) Okay. That's. Thooooose are wings. Those are fucking wings.
????: Well. There's at least one side effect. I guess that's. That's that for now.
    [There's a gulp.]
    ????: We'll, uh. We'll be back soon.
[The feed abruptly cuts back to music.]

    BROADCAST RECORD FROM 1/31/18
    [Music cuts to silence.]
    ????: Okay. I'm back.
    [A few seconds of breathing.]
????: (under breath) Okay. Deep breaths.
????: So, somehow, the radiation has mutated specific parts of our DNA, which, in my case, gave me wings.
    [A breath of silence.]
????: I don't know how this is going to affect humanity. But we've got to rebuild. I'm going to set up this station for a higher-power signal, and I'm going to try to get in contact with the people around here.
????: Keep listening, and keep surviving. Until next time...
    [An excited inhale.]
????: ...this is High Flyer, signing off. Good luck out there.

    Kintsugi: The Breakening (Round Two)
The world is broken. Let's fix it.
The Breakening is an open RP. Anyone can join in! If you're interested, check out the OOC thread and maybe post there, saying you're interested.
    Rules
    1. Don't be a dick. Obey the spirit of the game, and remember that there are other people. We're here to have a good time.
    2. You are you. Don't try to take control of someone else.
    3. "Yes, and..." Generally, try to build off of what someone's doing, rather than spending time undoing their work. (The only real exception is if you're just being a bad sport about the whole thing and trying to ruin the game. In which case, it may be undone/retconned.)

A young woman walked out of a cottage, holding the leash for a large puppy and carrying a bundle under her arm. The puppy, a half-grown Bermese Mountain Dog, bounced excitedly and paced around her, requiring her to stop to untangle them both from the lead every couple of minutes. "Chill, Bear. I'm not going out of sight, it's fine." The admonishment didn't seem to make the puppy any less enthusiastic about his self-appointed guard duties.

Several meters from the house, where the remains of a gravel driveway led off to what had once connected to a road, the woman stopped and started unpacking the bundle she had carried with her. A pair of bamboo poles, a roll of twine, a white sheet and a pair of kitchen scissors, all of which she used to assemble into a makeshift banner; the sheet had words written on it in fabric paint, block letters that were as big as she could get them without making it too big for the sheet:
    'SURVIVORS HERE
    1 HUMAN, 1 CAT, 1 DOG, CHICKENS'

Double-checking the knots holding the sheet to the poles, and pushing them a bit deeper into the dirt for security, the woman nodded to herself and then gathered up the twine and scissors. "Okay, that's...about all we can do there. Let's head back to the house, Bear." The puppy barked before starting to herd her towards the house.
