the battery on my iphone is shot, so I’m gonna have to get a new one. I can’t get another iphone because I refuse to participate in whatever nonsense they’ve got going on to replace the headphone jack. can anyone recommend me a good phone for someone very used to the iphone?

things I like about the iphone:
    • the camera. really gonna miss the camera.
    • most of the built-in apps, in particular messenger, podcasts, and music
    • the ui in general tbh. that is one of apple’s strengths

things I don’t like about the iphone:
    • lack of customizability
    • lack of expandable storage space
    • the fact that they probably designed this battery specifically to die so I would have to get a new phone

has anyone else switched from an iphone to something else? or if not, just any general recs?

I have had a good experience with the Google Pixel 4a. The camera is very good, and the storage space is nothing to sneeze at. The model is a couple of years old too, which has reduced it's price (though it also means it can be a little tricky to find nowadays.) The only flaw I have found so far is that it is Very Embedded In The Google Ecosystem, which means you can't turn location off and the music player situation is bad.

yeah unfortunately I'm not really willing to go for a Google product, they seem even worse than Apple for forcing you to use their own apps. I especially don't want anything that relies heavily on cloud storage since I don't have data and also don't particularly trust the cloud.

I have an LG ThinQ, and I can't speak for how intuitive it would be for an Apple user, but I've been happy with the amount of memory I got with it + an added SD card, and I like its native music app. I think the camera is pretty good. (There's no native podcast app, but I can rec you other podcast apps.)

looking it up, it seems their brand revolves around smart home technology, but I dont think that would be a problem if I just don't own any of their appliances. the reviews look pretty good too. I will put it on my comparison list!

does it do the thing where if you take the SD card out, you lose some data? my sibling has trouble with that. they've had all the songs deleted from all their playlists multiple times after taking out the SD card to transfer things onto their laptop. it's one of the things that makes me hesitant about android :P

I've never actually taken my SD card out...I just use the charger cable to transfer things to the computer

I ended up getting the galaxy s20 FE, then spent a couple hours going through the setting disabling all the tracking and convenience stuff i could :P currently trying to figure out how to transfer as much stuff as I can. they don't make it easy.

I currently use Himalaya, which I initially downloaded because I was subscribing to premium content for one podcast, and I'm not sure it has every podcast out there but it has everything I've checked for. I've also used Podbean and Stitcher.

I actually use Spotify as my default podcast app and find it really solid for the most part? I prefer it to the default Apple podcasts app, honestly, as a datapoint. That's assuming that you have a Spotify Premium account to begin with though--I'm not entirely clear on whether or not there are podcast restrictions for free accounts. And there might well be better options, I'm not very well-versed in the merits of various podcast apps.

(Also I'm glad you found a phone that seems to work for ya! I'm an iPhone loyalist myself, personal preference, but your complaints are extremely valid and I know a lot of people love their Galaxy decides, so I hope it works great for you!)
