Guys. I think Voltron might be bad.

I think that on it's own, the season was fine. It's the same basic tone as the last few seasons - a heavy emphasis on space battles, world building and war at the expense of character development. It's understandable that the fanbase felt cheated after the showrunners made a big deal about Shiro and Adam, when their actual onscreen relationship was brief and understated. I get the impression, just from watching the two brief scenes that involved Adam, that they pushed it as far as Dreamworks would let them.

The reality is, Voltron has to be able to sell toys in Target and Walmart to the masses. I'm going to guess that the show needs that revenue to exist (unlike steven universe). Having one of the leads be queer risks alienating people who are buying the toys for their kids, boycotts of gay anything in kids media is still something that happens in the US (Target got hit by one for selling an Archie comic that featured a gay marriage..two years ago). I'm hoping that will change. Hell, Shiro being in a queer relationship at all is a decent sized risk (that could be why he doesn't have a lion anymore). I'd love to here what happened behind the scenes.

There were certainly some mh... implications I wasn't too fond of with some of the stuff revolving around Hunk's and Lance's families but VLD has something of a history of taking a grabbag of unreflected tropes for their characters without really thinking about why that might be a bit unfortunate. And I'm certainly not exactly thrilled at Lotor's rapid decline being continued but eh, it's not like VLD ever promised superbly handled grey morality or anything.
I'm honestly more shook by the honest and heartbreaking realism of how Shiro's chronic illness was handled by the people around him than by Dirtbag Ex getting fridged ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The hype train wrt that was absolutely a mistake on the team's and Dreamwork's part though and I can't believe this kind of stuff still gets waved through the PR department in this day and age without someone going 'hey wait a second maybe we should not hype this up too much bc people might get pissed off if their expectations are too high' but maybe there's not that much crossover between TV production PR teams and Vidya Gaem PR teams and that's usually where the hype train stuff really blows up in people's faces.
But overall? This season was baller and had some extremely cool moments and I am here for the rapid nosedive into Neon Genesis Evangelion esque bullshit.

Yeah, I'm not happy about the whole handling of Shiro's ex, but I still think that the massive PR mishandling made it much worse. If they hadn't made a bunch of promises that they didn't keep, it wouldn't have been quite so terrible. Also seconding how impactful the whole handling of Shiro's chronic illness was. Honestly, I loved the season, especially just about everyone on Earth. The only thing I really *didn't* like was the game show episode, but I've just accepted that a lot of times what the Voltron writers see as "cute fun filler" reads as "unsettling and unpleasant with mildly fun bits" to me, and that's probably a me problem.

(If they make a toy of the Atlas I may actually buy it holy CRAP that thing was neato)

Actual footage of me completely losing my cool during that one scene with the Atlas (you know the one):

I heard she was kinda Macross-inspired which is cool because my dad was a big fan so I watched a lot of Robotech a while back. It's a very fun concept.

I'm not even that upset about Adam. Like, okay, cool, they're gay, that was pretty clear even though you didn't actually say it or show any actual affection, fine. Thanks for trying.

I'm mad about the plot holes, and the bad writing, and confusing the Solar system with the Milky Way, and Admiral McSexistcaricature. And frigging Bob. The thing with Adam is really no big deal by comparison.

I'm not gonna argue with you. It sucks you didn't like this season and I'm sorry, I wish it had been better in those aspects for your sake.
The, ah, astrophysics in Voltron world have always been questionable to the point where I legite just tuned the whole 'OH ITS THE MILKYWAY, OUR SOLARSYSTEM' thing out, ngl. The quantum abyss was too much for me to try and hold this show to any standards whatsoever :P

Just got caught up with the new season and I really liked it. I thought it was really interesting how it played out, but let me tell you I'm not liking the implications of the very last scene with Allura at all.

Oh god now I'm imagining them going somewhere that they end up calling "the Dirac Sea"

....did anyone notice that time was dilated in the opposite way that it usually is? When I noticed that I immediately went "fuck it, concentration of negative energy, just go with it why not."
