Which is to say, stuff like historical costuming, steampunk, and lolita fashion, because on some level they're basically the same thing.

This isn't really cosplay so I don't want to put it in the cosplay thread.

But I've done lots of steampunk and Victorian-esque stuff! (I gotta dig Steampunk Jade Harley out sometime.) I sew a lot of bedsheet skirts (I'll need to do a tutorial for my no-measure, full-length tiered skirts/petticoats sometime) and wear corsets on a relatively regular basis (mostly stuff from Orchard Corset).

Also, a little thing that bothers me: If you're going to get those cheap bridal hoop skirts from eBay to hold out your dresses (it's cooler in the summer than umpteen million petticoats, but will only really be modest enough if you wear full-length dresses) you should really stick another petticoat or two on top of it, preferably a ruffled one, so that your dress doesn't look horizontally ridged. (Which is hilarious, but gets on the nerves after you see too many of 'em.)

I keep trying to get into lolita, but i'm a size 18/20 and i live in a wonderfully tropical coutry. i've followed the fashion since at least 2005, i think?
my dream dress is aatp's midsummer night's dream in any color, but i'd have to cut myself in half to fit in one.
I have a Krad Lanrete mozarabic chant skirt that's been altered to fit me (sadly, sadly) but i never know how to coordinate it, so it's been sitting there unused.

You can do floof petties in summer but there is a trick. Get a rather short petti made of something soft cool and breathy. Put that one on first. Then your other pettis. It'll give you more air movement under the petties. (Don't get those horrible stiff itchy pettis, spare yourself the itching and terrible)

The birdcage look is getting popular but that's as a overskirt/dress. Avoiding wedding hoops. Especially cheap ones off ebay.

@Starcrossedsky I like putting my soft purple thrifted alineish petti under skirts with my fairy kei-ish stuff. Swish swish!

@witchknights a lot of taobao shops will do custom sizing. And well full shirring is your friend as well! I'm like 210lb with a 113 cm bust and I've got some AP and Meta and Baby and Putmayo (when I started I wound up wasting a lot of money on stuff that didn't fit and trading it to my friend for dresses. Most of what I have now if some selling old fandom stuff and getting really really good deal and doing payment plans).

I used to wear Lolita a lot, but I stopped last year kinda. I felt like I didn't really have anywhere to wear it, and I felt like it made people see me as childish, and also I didn't fit in with my local comm at all. I am abysmal at getting along with interest-focused groups. And it was kinda cliquey so if you weren't friends with the main people in the comm, pretty much you got ignored at every meetup. But uh. I still love the fashion! I just don't really wear it anymore.

But I love historical dresses oh my gosh. I love Victorian era gowns. More a fan of early Victorian and also the big, wide skirts. I like bustles on Lolita dresses, but bustles on Victorian gowns as kinda eh to me.

I really love Lolita clothing, and I actually have a petticoat and a skirt (both handmade), but that's it, because money and also my mother is kinda an ass about it.

@a tiny mushroom that sucks, I'm sorry. My comm is, well, they all seem pretty nice? I'm just awkward as fuck and cling to my best friend. I mainly like then excuse to dress up and do thing. But heck me and my bestie where lolita just to the mall. I kinda don't care if people think I'm childish at this point in my life. I spent more of highschool and young 20s being forced to dress in things I didn't like or wearing things I felt bad in because they were 'adult'. But I'm 34 and still get carded in normalish looking clothes so lords know how old people thing I am.

@emythos aw I'm sorry to hear about your mom. There is nothing wrong with handmade at all.

I love lolita so much :') tho I have felt myself drifting more towards a mori kei aesthetic I am still very much into Lolita tho right now I have not seen a release in quite some time that I was all over. Well the new Pirate Loli release by Aatp looks hella, but Big Brand is not really my thing because of my quirky thrift/offbrand aesthetic but I lovelovelove Infanta and F+F. And I wish to one day own the goddamn Jellyfish dress by Krad Lanrete.
What's you guys's favorite accessories? I'm really into tiaras and crowns, especially more unusual ones. I have four handmade flower crowns, two tiaras and plan on making a drift-wood-circlet, as well as a clockhand crown.

Aatp has so much pretty things but is mostly too tiny for me.

So big ~controversial~ question. Replicas. Thoughts on them?

I wouldn't buy replicas of indie brands but Angelic Pretty and Baby? Hells yeah. People talk about it as if we are stealing food from the designers mouths...and I don't think they really understand how designing works. They don't get paid per dress. And the only reason AP 'cracked down' a few years back (before which most girls and egl seemed pretty chill about replica)? They were about to make a deal with Disney to make Disney inspired and outright Disney Lolita dresses and they didn't want Disney getting cold feet. Baby doesn't seem to really care.

Like yeah don't wear it to a brand tea party -- but if some many are fine with 'replica' shoes and bags and everything else -- the only reason for some girls to get salty over replicas is a)it makes their 'real' dress less 'special' (ie they will look less rich and elite) b) 'fat girls' will wear it and ruin everything forever!!11!1 (*eyeroll*). So yeah a bit of classism and fatphobia. But that's just my two cents.

Yeah I don't care about replicas really. I wouldn't know how to go around getting one either though, and I already prefer the maternity sack dress cut which I usually fit because it's more size friendly.
Honestly I just ??? about the whole debate? Maybe it's because I can't afford brand any which way except on extreme sale or second hand and basically... If I can fit genuine brand and get it second hand for the same amount of money as a replica would be (or even less), why would I go to the trouble of getting a replica? I wouldn't.
So yeah, honestly I don't think I'd get a replica, but other people? sure knock yourselves out.

Well a lot of times replica is the only way to wear some dresses if you aren't on the smaller side. And it tends to be cheaper first and second hand than brand. I'm never going to fit into some dresses. Not without seriously altering my body. My chest was too big when I was a size six for a lot of brand, even if I dropped the weight back to that my chest is still going to be there.

(On a side note I am getting ride of my Bodyline pink carousel horse jsk: http://www.ebay.com/itm/191602388513?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649)

Yeah, I get the chest problem, it's pretty hard. I'd get away with sportsbras some probably but I mean I don't even look at Mary Magdalene anymore because I know I don't fit their size range. BtSSB/AatP is almost like barely too small for me which is kind of frustrating but my waist is more of a problem there....
Meta has good sizing and plenty of shirred stuff from what I've seen?
F+F offers a HUGE variety of sizes and custom sizing on most items, so I cannot actually recommend them enough for the more gothic and classic lolitas (Or even steampunk and Aristo, their Jackets alone are a DREAM)
(They actually have some sweet Lolita too I believe, but not that much recently afaik?)

  14. Allenna

Allenna I am not a Dragon. Or a Robot. Really.

Yeah I know the alternatives. I am very very very aware of all the places I can get stuff that will fit me.

And this is not directed at you really, but it gets a little frustrating when people do that? Like most fat and busty lolita's that aren't just starting know the places that will do custom sizing that have bigger sizing, that sometimes do shirring. It doesn't make the fact that I might really rather have that one angelic pretty or btssb dress and don't want to settle on whatever will fit. Like unless it's clear the person is just starting out, please do not do this? Especially when someone is explaining why they might have replica in their closet? Like it's kinda frustrating and starts to feel really insulting. Because every time a fat lolita voices frustration or talks about replicas we get 'the list'.

Especially since it leaves out that Angelic Pretty will sometimes do full shirring (My second jsk was Strawberry Ribbon), that sometimes randomly btssb jsks are roomy as fuck. So a lot of people get left with the impression of "these are the fat girl" brands" settle on something from them, stay away from Brand." Which I've seen make girls just give up.

I'm sorry to sort of rant and it's not really directed at you, but straw camel micro aggression etc etc.

Allenna I am not a Dragon. Or a Robot. Really.

God fucking damnit had a whole response written up then my then my internet crashed and the draft wasn't saved. And I'm too frustrated to do the whole nice well thoughtout thing again.

tldr edition: this is not really at you but please do not do this. fat lolitas that aren't just starting out are all mostly really aware of the stuff that will fit us and will do custom or is just big. We know. We get 'the list' every time we complain or express frustration at having to settle or why we might want a replica. It drives people away. It ignores that there are Brand dresses that will fit fat girls fine, but even then might not be the print or dress someone fell in love with. Telling people 'here are the fat girl 'brands', stay away from Brand" makes people give up if just because no one listens. I and others maybe do not want to fit into a 100 dresses from F+F we might want to fit into that ONE print or floral. And sometimes that gives one option - replicas. We do not need to be given the list AGAIN when we try to say why we might wear replica or why "but this one will fit you!" doesn't always make up jump for joy.

Like if someone asks "What are brands that do bigger or custom sizing" by all means give them 'the list'. But don't assume someone complaining about sizing or talking about replicas doesn't know about any alternatives to the well known brands.

sorry, just camel straw, mircoaggression, etc, etc,

No yeah you are right. I should not have done that. Completely understandable.
What's your favorite trend in the last few seasons? I'm personally sighing a lot over the mermaid and nautical themed releases though they don't fit my aesthetic at all? Also Art-Loli and Mori styled Lolita outfits with fawnfur and cardigans are so adorable?

It's fine. Like I said it wasn't even really you - I've just been hearing it a lot recently and it gets under your skin after a while, no matter how well meaning and nice the person saying it is, you know? It almost be easier if people were nasty. *makes a face* And I'm having a bad spoon day as well.

I am all about the ocean, sea, mermaid trend. Marine Kingdom is so lovely. I hope we get some more cute sweet prints. I want something with smiling little octopus or something.

I have literally 0 money right now. Like that's the highest hurdle right now. Being into 2 majorly expensive, kind of different hobbies means I have to basically neglect any Lolita related purchases while I build up a new LARP-character.
