I spent my winter attaching wolf pupy tweets to Umineko characters because I am a serious artist. (Spoilers for all eight episodes of Umineko.)

Battler: people say "what you don't know won't hurt you" when in factuality i don't know anything and am constantly being seriously injured and hurt

Beatrice: the internet's largest collection of illegal Halloween sound effects is mine for the taking [WITCH'S LAUGH] [WITCH'S LAUGH]

Ange: you have to be cruel to be kind, no wait the other thing, you have to do nice things. phew, could have caused a lot of problems

Jessica: some things have to be seen to be believed, the good news? you can just not look at them.

George: i think i speak for all of us, just in general.

Maria: reached the limit of what you can do with imagination? why not try occult dark magic

Shannon: things are going really well for me now that ive changed the meaning of really well to the opposite of what it means in my head

Kanon: me: life is bullshit / me but with different hair this time: youre right about that / me: thank you so much

Kinzo: easiest way to win at chess is to drop a grenade on the board, pieces to pieces, chess to dust

Krauss: your new get rich scheme has to be twice as dumb as your last one otherwise you get deranked from 'idiot genius' to 'regular businessman'

Natsuhi: the golden age of throwing a baby out with the bath water was over, and both the phrase and act developed a negative connotation in society

Eva: the key to success in life is to work hard, set goals, and have access to a powerful magic spellbook

Hideyoshi: if your newborn baby has a full head of hair that means it is a business baby and is ready to enter the world of finance

Rudolf: i dont want to throw anyone under the bus but when push comes to shove maybe i am really good at throwing people under buses. who knows whats underneath buses anyway, maybe treasure.

Kyrie: a good deed is its own reward? no thanks i want 100 coins

Rosa: i never promised you a rose garden [footage of me promising you a rose garden] god damn it

Genji: if you drag out your slight thoughtful pause eventually the other person will walk away and then you dont have to say anything

Kumasawa: i did the best i could with the resources i was given, which was nothing

Nanjo: he died how he lived, not my problem

Gohda: as someone who has a long history of not understanding anything, i feel confident in my ability to continue not knowing what is going on

Ronove: "Even when blood flows in the streets, there are cookies to be had." - Cookie Monster

Virgilia: you look tired, why dont you close your eyes for a while, trick some people into thinking you dont have eyes

Gaap: everyone who died and was killed on my quest to get really good hair and fashion deserved it and i dont care

Seven Stakes: another wonderful blood ritual, looks like the satan has done it again. thank you to everyone who was killed

Chiester Sisters: PROTIP: shoot him again, his soul is still dancing

    Sakutarou: ∑:ᘌᴐ

Bernkastel: instead of spending all your time trying to make things better and failing you can cut out the middleman and just make things worse

Lambdadelta: popcorn, or as cerebral smart minds such as myself refer to it 'popped corn', is the number #1 food of watching things

Erika: "i don't think..." yeah you don't think, i on the other hand am constantly thinking, various thoughts and ideas, as a genius of intelligents

Dlanor: stop being so defensive i am just trying to hit you with weapons

Zepar & Furfur: the mystery of sex remains unsolved to this day, some believe it never existed, others still seek the truth [curtain close]

Featherine: it's time i start letting you figure things out on your own instead of me not knowing the answers but making them up anyway.

Will: lets forget about the bodies for a second. what do you really want to let hit the floor? your feelings perhaps?

Lion: life was so simple an hour ago, i had a sandwich and everything. now things are worse and i dont have a sandwich any more

Clair: to clear up confusion all the characters in this comic are just me with different wigs on

Ikuko: some say the titanic sank because of iceberg but to me, it is a mystery

Tohya: this whole me thing is dead in the water

I want to get into higurashi and umineko because I've heard good things, but visual novels are too much for me

are there any good alternatives? I've heard the umineko anime is terrible, but what about higurashi's? and are there any manga adaptations that could also be workable alternatives to the vns?

Higurashi's anime is good, I think. You do need to be able to stomach the animation though. It can be. Interesting. At times. I will say that some of Studio Deen's Deenness does add to the horror scenes, though. It also has a baller soundtrack. There is A LOT cut from the anime, but I do think that the bulk of the story survives in tact. The core essence. Umineko's anime doesn't and I do think that part of that is just due to how complicated Umineko is in comparison. Higurashi's a straighter, simpler mystery compared to Umineko. The manga adaptation of Higurashi is...alright? I haven't finished it though so I can't say much about it beyond that writers and artists change with each arc, leading to Interesting Unevenness. I find it neat but some would find it irritating, I feel. There's apparently drama CDs? But I've not like. Heard them or found any copies of the things online. The only things from the drama CDs I've heard are the Dear You renditions used in them. Dear You being like...the thematic anthem of Higurashi as a series. There's variations for all the different characters and even fan arrangements. After finishing Higurashi in some capacity I'd highly recommend listening to Dear You.

I've heard good things about Umineko's manga, but again I haven't read it. I have heard that the manga does spoil some stuff that is revealed much later in the sound novel/that you yourself need to figure out because ryukishi doesn't state it outright in the novel though. So it's often treated more as a complement to the novel than a replacement. At least from what I've heard from people.

Higurashi's anime isn't as mind-bogglingly bad as the Umineko one, but the tone and focus is different from the VN (higher ratio of gore-and-ridiculous-crazyfaces horror to mystery and creeping psychological dread). That said, from what I've seen and heard at least the Umineko manga is pretty good, though the art is all over the place because different arcs have different illustrators.

I...I assumed that the frog mascot we saw in the preview video was just Ryukishi07's new fursona or something - and I assumed that everyone else had assumed the same, since I wasn't seeing anyone talk about it - but is it possible that...the frog is...an actual character...in Ciconia...????

Also damn, Takano and Okonogi are just there. We're not even pretending that they're not gonna be there. Is this the game where Okonogi gets upgraded to true main character status??

Hello, I honestly didn't expect one of my favourite trash anime to have a thread here I was never that into Umineko, but Higurashi absolutely pulverised my understanding of anime at the time I watched it, like. Fuck, ten years ago. It is one of my favourite things with no fandom. (Primarily!! Because of the unreliable narratives and the in-person experiences of absolute pants-shitting paranoia!! Goddamn there still isn't anything that quite gets it like Higurashi did.)

I could never get into the VN though. Does that make me a heretic? That probably makes me a heretic. Anyway Shion and Hanyuu are my favourite characters.

Not total heresy. R07 writes slooow openings. I haven't read the VN either; I've heard the manga adaptations are kind of a mixed bag, but some of them are pretty decent?

Okay I lied I actually loved the Umineko manga by [name missing due to Garbage Brain Syndrome] that my ex use to have. If I could have consumed the entire Umineko saga that way, I probably would have gotten into it -- I think the anime was good (and I have also never minded the poor production quality, it's a part of the charm) but everything was just so disjointed and moving too fast.

I've never read the Higurashi manga, but apparently they don't directly follow any of the VN or anime routes? Which feels like it's in the spirit of the thing, admittedly.

Hello yes I am the resident Higurashi anime stan. I've also read the manga. The Higurashi manga is adaptations of the routes used in the anime and initial VN release, along with some routes originally exclusive to the manga. These have since been added to the Kizuna release of the games.

As for the quality...Quality of them is a mixed bag because the artists and such switch with each arc.

Would you say they're worth seeking out for the experience or should I just watch the anime again instead?

.... I mean I'm gonna watch the anime again, I'm mostly asking because committing to reading manga/comics is a huge braintask. If there's something exceptional there, I'm interested to see what it is.

Apparently there's a new Higurashi anime coming out this year.

I'm. Hmm. Maybe it's the rose-tinted glasses talking but something about that character art makes it immediately less appealing than the original anime. I always thought the general wonkiness of the art style treally enhanced the horror.
