Due to the delight of finding a nice skeleton miniature yesterday and wanting to make it into Papyrus... I actually pulled out paintbrushes and the new paints I've had gathering dust for over a year!

Back in college, my main painting teacher was a big fan of having 7 paints: white, 2 blues/reds/yellows. There should be a warm and a cool of each of the colors, so you would have one that's good for mixing with the other two primaries. And it was a pretty decent way to go.

A post I saw on Tumblr about... a year and a half ago...? Had a similar thing, but only 4-5 colors! A certain pthalo blue, a certain magenta, and a certain yellow could, between them, blend very nicely to make a full color wheel.

And so yesterday, before I started in on the mini, I tested those colors out on a cheap canvas:

Dang, they are vivid, and dang, but only the colors that are more than half yellow have any light to them. I'm gonna be struggling to try to lighten the blue-purple-red range without diluting the color.

i'm happy to report that this topic somehow came up in another thread and another brave soul stepped up to the task, flag out of ass and all.

so consider that project shelved unless i'm really in the mood for arting.

ANYWAY it occurred to me today that i'm more likely to actually do stuff with this thread if i give myself permission to put silly/incomplete things up as well as Trying To Be Good Art things. So!

Over on Dreamwidth I rp as Papyrus in a game with transformation stuff, where the longer the character is in the game the more their bodies (and optionally minds) change. I love when others have art of their characters so that I can see what they're picturing, and this morning I was in the mood to do one for Papyrus.

Started doing it this morning by referencing his battle sprite and an anatomy book, to try to get a balance between his canon proportions and realistic human skeleton proportions, and drawing on paper. Took pictures of my progress every time I wanted to make major revisions, so I would have access to the older version. Finally got to a point I was content enough, took a better-lit picture, and started messing around on the computer. First to isolate the lines, second to get a base of his body between the lines, and third to get color added.

It turns out I can only stare at a naked skeleton for so long before feeling a embarrassed, and decided to fix that by adding layers of clothing. Didn't like the first outfit I tried designing, since I was aiming for "what is he wearing during this day of this event," and he's kind of being brainwashed into the club scene.

So I decided to circumvent the whole "designing clothing" thing and go back to basics. Do a quick draft of his usual costume, removing the transformations he has in that game.

I turned down the opacity of the lines, since I didn't care to do more than very quick and rough blockings for his clothing, and the strong contrast of the outlined parts vs non-outlined parts bugged me.... but with no lines at all, you can't see his face. An awkward compromise

(See why I said rough? Look at that sock, it's been starched so much it could break a leg)

But I mean to come up with a outfit typical of him in the game outside of temporary clubbing brainwashing event, and draw it out more neatly with outlines and all. Coming to a thread near you eventually.

the colour of the markings and the crystal on his head remind me of the golden flowers. :D

    Funny you should say that!

I compromised between the color of the golden flowers and Papyrus' red-orange to come up with the colors for the small surface crystals and the bigger crystal crown.

(In this game I took him from the King Papyrus ending, and he's Uncomfortable with the fact that he can't take the crown off)

    :D:D:D

and the way you draw him is very elegant - but more so in the traditional media version than the digital one.

I think I get that. Skull, sternum, arms, pelvis, and legs, I drew pretty smooth lines. Rushed it more with ribs and tail, but those don't stand out much. So it overall looks smooth, and I drew his position to be a little more human, relaxed, than his game sprite.

The way I went about isolating the lines pixelated them a lot. Levels and curves and color selection tools are rough. :p

Computer is a heck of a lot easier for the clothing stuff. When I was younger I would've traced him over and over to draw him in different outfits in the same pose (the better to reduce the differences and more easily compare the outfits)... And I even considered doing that today, but ugh, effort:payout didn't look good.

I'll at least draft my two year art on paper!

Mmm the smell of inspiration. Smells like shitposting, but somehow pleasantly fragrant.

Ahhhh... undiagnosed mystery attention span problems. At least I remember the thread exists.

More things for the idea archive inspired by recent modly communications:

    - a pink/purple dragonfly surfing in a totally radical image

    - a shiny and smooth toaster propaganda poster, optional layout to emphasize reaching for inspirational toast

    - a hamburger conveniently censoring an entity with many tentacles, modeled after that art with the green apple in the guy's face

And stuff I've done relatively recently...

Pastel pencils on white paper, first time using them for a decade. I played with way too many lines (and got impatient in the process) rather than blending. Partly because the usual paper cone method of blending is a very unhappy sensory thing.

The updated version of my reference art for Papyrus in the transformation game. He's since expanded his wardrobe, grown longer feet, and adopted a Cubone.

(More recent art here if I think of any)

as a result of the general kintsugi context, i initially assumed that papyrus' shirt meant that he had became a kintsugi mod :P

The UU church had a thing today where we did "soul portraits," art with felt or drawing or painting that was supposed to express something fundamental about our essence. I got a little enthusiastic and didn't size it how I meant to, and it not fitting [the matboard] is probably all the more fitting [of me]! I'm still gonna play with it some more. The way this is, it's like the central color of each is a tree trunk leading up into branches and leaves, with stars surrounding. Works best with the purple and blue trunks, but even with the others I really like the effect.

It's been a few years since I used this thread. Partly because not a lot of making art, partly just because my life's changed and in some ways this feels like a different person posted these things.

Still, wanna celebrate that I spent a couple hours doodling and sketching while listening to the latest CR2 episode. It was a rough week and I don't expect next week to be much better, so I'm making some time for me in between.
