the owl for healing was a good call, but I think that was it

It was a good idea, but I believe it was still incorrect -- the owl lets you cast a spell you don't know, but it still requires one of your spell slots. Griffin let it fly because it was the ultimate boss battle, though.

Like, my knee-jerk reaction is, clerics don't know any spells, and neither do wizards. They prep them from lists. It's just bards and sorcerers and all those classes that know spells
So Merle or Taako could've cast ANYTHING
As long as they gotten the spell slots required
What level WERE they anyway, like 18?

Luckily the McElroys all focus more on story, and a somewhat cohesive story, rather than rising for mad power
