reasons toffee from star vs is such a fantastic and effective villain, much less a non-boring Chessmaster archetype: he's not gloaty and maniacal, and he's not emotionless, he's just so fucking done. whatever he's planning, when his facade cracks, it's not to show that he's actually Secretly Not So Sure his plan will go through; it's because it's been in the works for so long, and he's so totally sure it'll go as planned, that his little bouts of pissiness and snappiness are him expressing sheer bored frustration with having to wait for everyone else to catch up.

like. there's no sense of projection or insecurity or inferiority-superiority complex that he's trying to cover. he's just tired of waiting and fucking disgusted by having to associate with people he sincerely, coldly believes are Beneath Him to get it done.

toffee is chilling and this show is fucking fantastic, despite being Wacky and Lighthearted, at building a sense of sheer crawling dread.

like the way they do it is just so weirdly like. coordinated and contrasted, strickler makes quick flourishing snappy movements with his skinny fragile hands and angor makes very calculated, deliberate, graceful slow movements with huge terrifying powerful hands and like. AAAAAAAAAAA I LOVE IT IT'S SUCH A GOOD QUICK SUBTLE COMPARISON OF THEIR CHARACTERS
