Yes I know weird topic. But placenames are great and I get a great deal of amusement out of strange ones, and I was going through the album of my Cornwall holiday on facebook this afternoon and felt the need to showcase these particularly good examples: 'Goonhilly Downs' was the one we particularly liked here. We decided this one was more like a Happy Noise than a placename. Actually also a pretty place, though there's not much to it. The Lizard, near which is Lizard Point. We were actually forced to turn round and come back to snap this one. Ventongimps. This one isn't a 'place name' per se, but come on. Feel free to add your own, of course!
Some towns in Mexico have wonderful names, even for South Americans. Maravatio remains one of my favourites. I used to call my parent's big car "Dr. Maravatio". Patzcuaro is a lovely town, but I definitely always found the name quirky.
Oooh, Patzcuaro has a lovely ring to it, though lord knows if I'm pronouncing it right, I can't even pronounce english half the time. xP
there's a town in texas called ding dong. me and my friends wanted to go there and visit the town hall to learn its history when we were in high school, but sadly we never ended up going.
I gotta admit, the US has some wonderful ones when it comes to just being random. Like, well, Ding Dong. And why are there so many places with women's names? And random phrases as names? The UK is somewhat better for names that just sound weird though. xP
I always had a fondness for Zzyzx, California, an odd little community in the Mojave Desert one can spot between Southern California and Las Vegas.
I think the most evocative place name near me is Angel Fire, a village and ski resort, but the name long predates the resort.
*sighs* I grew up in a place called Pardeeville. Introducing myself in clubs is the worst. "Alright, so, as our icebreaker, uhm, your name, your major, where you're from annnndddddd your favorite marine animal!" "..." "..." "dammit, ok, my name is boyacrossthestreet, majoring in psych, minoring in nonprofit, from a town called pardeeville, and sharks" "..." "you're from where now?" History: John Pardee, French Explorer, discovered a patch of boring and named it after himself. (Although we used to live by Hell, Michigan. my dad fixed the pipes there once when it, in fact, froze over)
Everything about this post is perfect. Does it have a beard? Are you required to have a beard to live there? If not it doesn't deserve the name. xP
there is an entire song devoted to the place names in newfoundland, with the very apropos name "a night in dildo" (link to video)
There's a couple of parallel streets I know that are Pond and Andover, and the street running between them is Pondover. idk i think it's really cute
No, but it is frequently the centre of drunken fights, which is Australian masculinity in a nutshell, really.
Don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but there's a Redcliff in Queensland. I think this is excellent because I am a Dragon Age nerd.
