Oh god how do you stay sane through a UTI

    I AM GOING INSANE
Seriously, it is taking all my will to fight off a meltdown of epic proportions right now.
I DO NOT NEED TO PEE. I DO NOT NEED TO PEE. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THE WORLD I DO NOT NEED TO PEE.

I've looked all over the web for advice on how to stay sane, but it's all how to care for your body, not your mind. I've got antibiotics (which I have good odds of being intolerant of, but we'll try it anyway), I've got mega-concentrated cranberry tablets (equiv. 10g), urinary alkaliser, a hot water bottle, and I'm drinking so much my urine is like water. I just cannot handle the constant brain-popup of "Hey, you really need to pee! Like, now! Hey, you're gonna piss yourself!" when it is not the case.

Any advice welcome. Do not fear to say things for fear I have tried them before, I don't care about repeat information, I am desperate for something to help.

Painkillers. :P I don't remember the name but there's a specific urinary-tract analgesic that works fucking wonders. Tends to be harsh on your stomach though, so make sure to eat beforehand.

Kinda gross, but: sit in the bath. The hot water will help you feel better and relax, and if two drops come out every three minutes you dont have to get up and stop what youre doing and go to the bathroom and shit. Take a book or a game system or something. Obviously, shower when you get out, but i tend to spend hours in the bath when i get one because lord knows you're not going to accomplish fuckall else.

Oh gods, please, does anyone know more about this? Google hesitatingly suggests phenazopyridine, which is a dye? The doctor has just suggested paracetamol, which, quite frankly, does fuckall. I have a wide array of painkillers available to me through family and friends (don't worry, I never take anything I haven't taken before under doctor's orders). I've found that Ondansetron, an anti-spasmodic, helps some.

I'm not that bad any more, but if it gets worse again I might try it. My sympathies for having been through that yourself!

That's the one! The non-generic name is Pyridium according to my mother. You have to be prescribed it though so talk to your doctor.

Ergh, turned out that I WAS intolerant of the new antibiotic. I'm stupidly over-sensitive to antibiotics, the one I took before this time made me barf so hard I broke a rib. I didn't even know you could do that 0_0. Now back from doctors again, remaining calm and prone with new antibiotics, a 100bpm resting heartbeat and diarrhea. This sucks so bad.
I asked while I was there about Pyridium, it's not licensed in my country, nor is anything similar. Does anyone know if getting stoned or codiene would help?

Oh jeez, honey D: I'm sorry, I didn't realize it wasn't available where you are. No idea how well other painkillers work, unfortunately.

Second the warm bath suggestion. Adding about half a cup of baking soda to the bath water might help too.

You know what I needed? You know what I REALLY NEEDED??? My period. Yeah, good job body. That must have taken some effort, GIVEN THAT I'M ON MEDICATION TO STOP MY PERIOD.

Fuck this shit, I'mma go and sit in the bath and marinate in blood, urine and baking soda. FML.

Depending on what medication you're on for stopping your periods, antibiotics may fuck them up a little causing break through bleeding. It's one of life's less funny little jokes.

Seconding the "it's probably the antibiotics". Shit does not play nice with BC

Thank the universe that's over. Antibiotics kicked in overnight, now feeling much, much better.
Thank you all for the suggestion of a hot bath with baking soda, it helped enough that I could get to sleep and let the antibiotics do their job without being immediately pissed out. I was hesitant to do it because neither our bath nor hot water cylinder are hooked up to mains or waste, so running a bath is a fun job. Thankfully I have a wonderful partner who got it all running, made dinner, and bought me tea and an apple pie from down the road.

Reading back, I'm laughing a little too. It sucked so bad, it's over now, and thank you all for your support and giving me somewhere to rant about my bodily functions.

IT'S BACK. Tests say there's no infection. Referred to specialist. Going insane one drop at a time.

Checking myself into hospital. I can't deal with this. I am in a constant state of meltdown or near meltdown, I am contemplating suicide, I need professional help.

Oh god, I had a kidney infection once (same had uti-went away-came back sort of situation), and it was awful, but I mended up in a week once I got the right treatment. I'm so glad you went to the hospital to get care, kidney infections are no joke.
