Somehow we've ended up with a widespread perception that site policy is you can talk shit about anyone you want if you don't actually give their name.

    This is not a policy.

The reality is, we don't always have the time to track everything down, we don't read every post, so if something isn't reported, we may never notice it. And sometimes it's hard to tell what things are about. Personal insults are, in fact, still potentially a problem. Note, we don't actually have a general rule against "personal insults". Context is a thing! So are judgment calls!

But the perception that anything you say is fine as long as you didn't name names? No. This is not how things are intended to work.

And to put it more directly: If you think that "didn't name names" makes a post okay, but you don't think it would be accepted otherwise, it's probably still actually being a jerk, and even if we don't get involved, you should maybe think about why you feel like you need to do that.
