Mm... The soul will usually call strongest to a particular sort of work, but which branch that is is completely unrelated to bloodline. If I recall correctly, for example, my maternal grandmother had some small talent for ice-- interesting enough on its own, in desert clans-- but I've never been able to manage anything along those lines save particularly chill wind, and that by instead varying a storm spell.

[He looks interested by that.] So it's more down to an individual level than the whole of your family? That's interesting. And it's not tied to caste either... or gender, I assume. Nothing any of you have said makes it sound that way, at least, and the other version of you I'd met was a Healer despite not being female.

One could say Tevinter is attempting to tie magical ability to caste-- their most powerful mages are the ruling class, and those breed intentionally for more power both societal and magical-- but no, there I believe it's a more social pressure as to which branches are taught. Healing, for example, is a relatively safe choice for an unexpectedly gifted ex-slave. [They nod to Kassius.] And of course southern mages and elves don't have such stratified castes to mark.

I... cannot speak to whatever the other me might feel, but I am also a healer and not a woman. Orlais' Grand Enchanter is a woman who specializes in combative ice magic, and also enjoys throwing herself sword-first at dragons. I really don't see what gender's got to do with casting at all.

[The confusion, it grows.] Caste isn't necessarily tied to rulership--a Queen can chose not to have a court if she doesn't want one, and it happens frequently in villages where there's two Queens and simply not enough reason to have a proper Court of any kind. At least, that's how it's supposed to go. Kaeleer does it right. In Terrielle, males of any caste that stepped out of line ended up slaves more often than not if they weren't careful, and any Queen that didn't jump to Hayll's command was broken or killed so she couldn't become a threat.

It's sort of... what we are? Being born a specific caste is just inherent to being Blood. Black Widows are usually born, though females can be inducted into their ranks--males usually just serve, since we're not allowed to access their secrets, unless a particularly radical Black Widow bucks the trend and teaches us the way other Black Widows born without the gift for it are taught. Other than the High Priest of the Hourglass and Vasar, I've never even heard of another male Black Widow. And males can't be Priestesses or Healers either, though the second is more inborn than being a Black Widow. Healing can't be taught to those without the gift for it.

It doesn't matter how strong or weak you are either. A Queen without jewels is still a Queen. The most powerful witch in the land is still just a witch. A Warlord wearing the Opal in an aristo family can have a White-Jeweled Warlord Prince from the gutter executed, if he can whisper the right words in the right ears. Or, more likely, hand that Warlord Prince over to his favorite lady to break to stud. [Oh, bitter? No, he's not bitter. These lovely dark chocolate cupcakes he's peeling to pieces to nibble on are bitter, not him.]

I GUESS IT’S LUCKY WE HAVE GOD TIER, IF YOU TAKE IT OUT OF THE ENTIRE AWFUL APOCALYPTIC CONTEXT. ASSUMING THE EMPRESS DOESN’T HAVE US ALL GUTTED BEFORE WE HIT TEN SWEEPS. [snuggle back. matt doesn’t have god tier and karkat knows how much thinking about outliving everyone you’ve ever known sucks]

[Ghilan winces.] Terminology strikes again, it appears. I believe dwarves are the only people who truly use the word 'caste', and there it denotes the station one is born into-- a Smith is the son of a Smith, a Merchant is the daughter of a Merchant, and so on. And of course dwarves don't produce mages, so... extrapolation is difficult. As you've described them though, no, we have no parallel system

[Ghilan doesn't try to call it away, but does send a faint pulse of their own power as greeting. Hello tiny friend!!]

    Oh, hello, what are you?

-It stops looking over the mi and zooms over to Ghilan instead, bopping their nose before hiding back in Kassius' hair. Kassius chuckles.-
She's curious today! This is my friend, Ghilan, she's not differentiated enough for a name.

Alright, that makes more sense now. [At least he can figure out why they were going all weird over mentions of it.] Lineage... unless you're an aristo, it doesn't mean much for the Blood, and the aristos are pretty good at policing their own when it comes to making sure no one fools around with the lower classes. It's still possible to get on their level if you play the Court games but... outside of the powerful and the good at politics, that's not really an option. And it makes people uncomfortable if a Warlord Prince is off the leash, so not being good at politics usually means ending up in whatever little Court will suffer to take you, if you can't lay low. [He shrugs.]

I had it pretty easy, all things considered. I was able to lay low, and in Kaeleer, they won't force you once you've served your immigration requirements.
[The wisp is weird as hell, though probably not the weirdest thing he's seen, given the whole... everything, with Ghilan's dead counterpart. He's pretty sure he's heard them talk about these things before though.] Is that a... spirit?

[More amused than before-- the mi is clearly only mimicking their own phrasing, and besides doesn't come off as Condescending when it's a tiny fluffball]
I'm an elf; my name is Ghilan.

[They grin, letting another curl of power trail after the wisp. Tag?] I'd figured. Once they start differentiating they usually want more distinct forms.

    Matthias Death, dust, party, repeat

Specific talents usually run in the families, here. Necromancers are likely to throw more of the same, if they can have children at all. Most strong ones are infertile and adopt if they want a child. But outside of those really specialist cases, it's...rather broad. An elemental mage could have a child that's more gifted or interested in divination, or illusions or similar. Sometimes you get mage children from vanilla human parents, either because they had mages down the line and the talent's gone dormant, or because they just lucky on the draw and got the mage genes. [He slides another cupcake Aiden's way to eat or pick apart]
But we don't do courts. Vamps and fae, sure, but most mages are too hmmmm. Too much part of human society to have another one like that on the side. There are rules among mages, but usually the rules boil down to 'strongest mage wins, if you don't poke them they don't poke you, and be polite if you enter someone else's territory' but I don't think there's been a proper mage court in London since... well at least several centuries.
Though admittedly the last one might be because necros are territorial as hell and me waltzing into another city is gonna look like an act of aggression to the locals, so I gotta warn ahead and bring gifts, basically signal that I'm gonna hold with hospitality laws.

Exactly. The key to improvement is being yelled at. [He bits back with a smile] Also you need to keep me on my toes to keep me at least halfway in kissing range.

Yeah but honestly does it make a functional difference if you're gone live yonks anyways? Though I suppose now even if she does gut you, you can get back up and stab her when she's turned away to gloat? [Look, gotta be practical about it. Supportive Boyfriend?] So at least all of you have the same chances of making it through [Look, 'dying together' is a cold comfort, but sometimes it IS a comfort]

  20. Ghilan Lavellan

Ghilan Lavellan parenting the entire world since 9:41 dragon

[Ghilan can't help but snort at the 'lower classes' comment-- oh, the irony-- but does listen attentively.] Familiar enough, then, just with a different name and a different attitude towards mages. I suppose if Blood begets Blood the aristo families have no reason to exclude someone simply for manifesting powers?

Wisps are a sort of spirit, yes-- least dangerous, really, simply because they often don't have the strength to hurt anyone more capable than a kitten, but they do well enough for raising the odd corpse or befriending.

[A fainter smile. Mi is now classified as Tiny Cat Wisp.]
