This is like, creative, right? So. I really love smart technology. I taught myself how to code (and am terrible at it, lol) so that I could hack my IOT devices, because I needed more functionality than the software they came with provided. I'm building a thing, and not posting about it in the OP, because this thing is a gift for someone on the forum (lebesgue.... stop reading, please), and I don't want what the gift is showing up in the little preview thing if they hover over. I mean imo this pretty much gives away what I'm making anyway, but it's the PRINCIPLE of the thing.
OKAY So I am making a magic mirror. :D Lebesgue is getting the guinea pig version, because I have very particular constraints for the one I want to make briar. this is gonna be a very expensive project lmao but i'm mostly looking forward to getting to fuck around with the coding i've picked raspberry pi as the operating system i want to use (mostly because most anything i want to do is already available in github for me to tweak; it's also the operating system of mycroft, which is the ai assistant i plan on integrating into my iot system). this is the raspberry pi kit i'm purchasing: https://www.amazon.com/CanaKit-Raspberry-Starter-Premium-Black/dp/B07BCC8PK7/ the screen: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L6YXZLY/?coliid=ICUYTXNELDKV4&colid=1ENXZ0LCKF2TX debating if i want to go for making v1 a touch a screen, but if i do, overlay: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GJMQ966/?coliid=I3B7OR194KJJT&colid=1ENXZ0LCKF2TX the mirror: https://www.twowaymirrors.com/smart-mirror/ the pi kit and lcd screen arrive saturday and i am v excited to finally start working on this.
but also i'm just gonna use this thread to talk about my iot stuff i think so i'm a diehard chromebook user - i don't find windows os to be intuitive and i despise macbooks, whereas chrome is 1) easy, decent for lightweight things and 2)so so emminently hackable. i love my dual boot up into a linux unfortunately the cpu on my current chromebook is Dying (and was always pretty shitty as a Feature of chromebooks) but the newer chromebooks are looking nice
the ultimate goal is to be able to use it for video calls - the conversation that got me started on thinking about this was talking about magic mirrors and viewing portals in fantasy settings, so the goal is to eventually have something with that aesthetic. Right now I just want basic functions - time and date, weather, internet functionality
