So, I was yearning for some new stomping grounds, upon which to go a little mad from time to time and otherwise engage in the normal social activities of partially-tamed youth & sundry, and a pal of mine (my own personal minion, I insist) led me here.

I'm not sure what name she uses here though.

Anyway, I'm Carrick, or Fergie, or Ven, or something entirely utterly else. Hello. :)

What's the username inspiration? The cow is certainly appropriate given what Carrick is associated with (in that verse about the counties of Ayrshire).

Many moons ago (like, 2004 or 2005 probs), I was WAY into Morrowind. Soon enough, I needed to create an account to ask some questions about exactly how badly I had screwed myself. I noticed a lot of people seemed to be using their characters' names as their handles. When in Rome... you die of lead poisoning. When in Tamriel, probably might help to blend in with the natives as much as possible.

At the time, my would-be Nerevarine was called Carrickfergus, and that name I chose because I was and still remain deeply in love with the song.

I wish I was in Carrickfergus
    Only for nights in Ballygrand
I would swim over the deepest ocean
    Only for nights in Ballygrand
But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over
And neither have I the wings to fly
    I wish I had a handsome boatsman
To ferry me over my love and I

My childhood days bring back sad reflections
Of happy times there spent so long ago
My boyhood friends and my own relations
Have all past on now with the melting snow
So I'll spend my days in this endless roving
Soft is the grass and shore, my bed is free
Oh to be home now in carrickfergus
On the long rode down to the salty sea

Now in Kilkenny it is reported
On marble stone there as black as ink
With gold and silver I would support her
But I'll sing no more now til I get a drink
Cause I'm drunk today and I'm seldom sober
A handsome rover from town to town
Ah but I'm sick now my days are number
Come all me young men and lay me down
Come all me young men and lay me down.

Now, as for my own self? I have never been to Carrickfergus. The furthest I've ever gone outside the border of the US is Toronto. Nor, to my knowledge, did ever a person hailing from ANYWHERE in the British Isles even so much as spit on an ancestor of mine. But that song is part of a cobbled-together "heritage" I have built for myself in the space where many DC natives feel a cultural void -- our identities are less tied to our home than most people's are.

I had stopped using Carrick as a handle for a long time while I was off trying to be Famous in the Internet, but now I'm trying to distance myself from who I was then, and my old name feels ever so comfortable to slip back into.

I've come full circle, in a way -- In the beginning, I loved the idea of an old rover drowning his tears of longing in liquor. In the interim years, while I was someone else, I became an alcoholic, did some real wandering, moved some states away, spent all those months away from my wife and daughter, and became very much like the old man in the song.

So I came home, hit rock bottom not too long after, got sober (2 years 4 months 3 days), got treatment for the brain bullshit that was driving me to self-medicate in the first place, and now I get to be near my girls, like a real parent/spouse. :P

It pleases me to use my old name that describes a person I no longer am. Behold, I am Carrick Reborn~!

(The cow has absomootely no significance, however -- it was just a picture I had recently saved when I created my account here and couldn't think of anything better to use as an avatar.)
