Writing and actually getting your work out there

So, like I imagine many of us I love to write but lately I'm coming up with a block because it feels any emotion, any piece of myself I put into my writing is too much, too revealing and will get me in trouble. Or like I won't be able to take criticism objectively because it's so emotional for me.
Maybe someone else feels like that too, or I'd just love to talk about how to put yourself and your writing out there in general.

And this is where I turn to you lovely people. How do you get the courage to put yourself out there and tell a story that has meaning to you?
How do you get over that fear of someone not liking/hating your writing?
For example, do you run your writing by a friend or a writer's group (or anything like that) before you share with the public?
