Okay, but also consider that I find it extremely on brand for Iain Banks to have eaten the offending page in his novel (I regret deeply that I didn't ever get to meet him...)

people tagging stuff with things like "roadtrip au" when they really mean "mundane au where these characters go on a roadtrip" upsets my inner pedantist

Genuine question as someone who’s writing exactly that: what would be a good tag for such an AU?

imo, mundane au (or no magic/powers/whatever the local mundane au tag is for the fandom) + a separate tag for roadtrip

since 'roadtrip' is basically a story scenario, while roadtrip au implies the whole universe now revolves around a roadtrip or something, which has...not been the case for the fics I have read that were tagged "roadtrip au" (or similar things, like "apartment au" for a mundane au domestic fic about characters moving in together)

This is why -stuck always felt relevant.

i think the one -stuck that has stuck around is “lyricstuck” — pretty sure i saw a The Magnus Archives vid with “lyricstuck” in the title the other week.

deeply petty gripe, and one not shared by many: a lyricstuck, imo, is a format of post. what they've created is an mv.
(same complaint re: people using animatic for one-frame-per-line mvs wherein all of the frames are clearly polished. that's.. not an animatic.)

My understanding is that a lyricstuck is static images, right? Closer to a comic?

Yup, basically. It can be pretty abstract at times and does not have to follow a plot of coherent action sequences, just images that relate the subject matter back to the lyrics.

static images in the description field of an audio post of the song involved, if you're being extremely form purist, but yeah, that. they broadly tend not to translate very well to video on account of not being drawn to sync with the dimensions youtube uses and not having the lyrics written in locations that are easily trackable from frame to frame.

edit: ....anyway, fanfic gripes: ah, the good ol' "i didn't know i was picky about the exact way this ship was characterized until someone did it wrong."

tfw you like a thing save for one glaring thing that is frequent and makes a thing unreadable for you. this has happened to me a few times and i hate it every time. it's like the fanfic equivalent of realizing a food i've been liking has celery in it.

witgree, one of my main fandoms has a character whose speech patterns are butchered regularly by 90+ percent of fic writers and it Hurts

Uuuuuugh there is one writer in my corner of fandom that really really sucks at writing kink/BDSM but that's all she ever writes... and lately she's always been using my OTP and using all the kinks that are usually my FUCK YES buttons. Worse it that she thinks that she's GOOD at it and keeps trying to get head pats for it, and I suspect she's is actually specifically picking these to get head pats from me. She even swoiced into my DMs a few months ago trying to see if I'd commission fic from her after I mentioned wanting to commission (Art!! Not fic!!!) from a mutual friend. I appriciate that she seems to look up to me but I also think she put me in a position that if I say anything critical, even in the most helpful manner possible, it will crush her. But folks it's. It's bad. It's so, so bad.

I can not begin to emphasize enough how skin crawlingly uncomfortable her ideas of consent are, or how painful and squick inducing the descriptions of what the characters are doing become. It's starting to feel like a dog that keeps repeatedly bringing me dead, rotted things and waiting for praise. This isn't even my dog, it just keeps breaking into my house and dropping a stinking corpse at my feet.

I understand getting uncomfy with Link being underage (i forgot he *has* a canon age in BOTW) but you could also not trash your own writing and thus the people who liked it? Am i off base

There's a bunch of things here that are strange, but to pick just one of them - is there any reason why Link can't be of age? IIRC he's like 17 (+100 years of stasis) in BotW, but that's at the start of the game, which is a continent spanning adventure with no fixed timeline. It seems like there's no real reason why enough time can't pass before whenever your fic is set that he's an Official Adult.

a full run of BOTW seems like it should take place over the course of a year or two at least, so unless the fic has to be set right after he wakes up, he could easily be 18

actually he could easily be 18 anyway we don’t know when his birthday is. it could have been the day after everything went to shit.
