The NYPost wrote about a study that investigated whether cats pay attention to where their people are. I am not sure we needed a study of this, but anyway, the researchers decided they do.

Anecdotally, it's not just the voice. My mom's cat is always, always, waiting when I come out of the bathroom. I don't talk in there, so she's going by the sound of running water and/or the door.
