Yeah, there's a huge financial bubble around them right now and even before it hit a lot of the actual use of crypto was anonymous money laundering for organized crime, so they're a magnet for every kind of con ever devised.

The Gävle goat just burned down for the first time since 2016. My sibling has decided that this is a powerful and auspicious omen.

Smt V has a disappointing lack of story, and it makes me wish I could play the Raidou Kuzunoha games again.

What's the difference between poetry and song lyrics, besides the fact that one is set to music? If I quoted this at someone, would they be able to tell where it came from?

Xmas presents included a cat tree for future catsnakes (a small one so they won't hurt themselves falling off it, since ferrets can't land on their feet). Putting it together now.

The rhythm of the words is important to song lyrics, but for the most part poetry, even free verse or more obscure forms, has a greater emphasis on the rhythm, because it can be important in conveying meaning and keeping a flow in the reader's mind (or not as the case may be, whatever fits better with the tone). Song lyrics imo often feel flatter when read apart from their music, because some of the impact and emotional information that's conveyed through the flow and the.... if you'll pardon me but the mouthfeel of the words chosen - in written verse is conveyed through the melody, volume, time signature, backing information, etc, in song lyrics. Poetry also overall has a greater focus on imagery and the mood conveyed by certain word choices or phrases, imo.

For example: in the above, I guessed lyrics, because a) the flow is somewhat simple overall compared to the imagery being conveyed and b) the rhythm (by which I mean pattern of stresses) in the last line breaks the flow in such a way that I would usually expect a change in melody in a song. Even if this was free verse poetry, the stresses and vocabulary choices are very carefully considered in such a way that I wouldn't expect a line like that, whereas in music you're more constrained by the melody you're working with. In fact, if you look at the first draft of lyrics for songs written lyrics first, you'll often find that the rhythm and imagery is somewhat changed to better fit the melody or to be easier to sing in a single breath - a very important consideration!

Overall though these are pretty academic distinctions that I've mostly formed because I did a lot of fairly serious creative writing work in school, for most people there's very little difference.

song lyrics I think tend to have... I guess the word would be stricter rhythm? because a song's beat getting broken up by an arrhythmic section tends to be more jarring than a section in the middle of a poem with a direct rhythm. and songs tend to be more repetitive, because with songs the melody and (usually) backing instruments can carry a lot of the intended meaning, where as with poetry there are only the words.

but honestly I think it's more of a spectrum between poetry and music than a divide.

This is where I fall on it, I think. There are some songs with lyrics that work fine set to music but would simply not fly as poetry, and plenty of perfectly good poems that just could not be set well to music, and then there’s a lot between those two extremes.

And then there’s TMBG, writing a song about a poetic format in said poetic format.

yeah, I was thinking of TMBG there lol. their lyrics are very poetic, with the roundabout but precise way they have of describing hard to describe concepts and feelings - but at the same time I feel like they mostly wouldn't work so well as straight up poetry. not sure I could tell you why, I don't know enough about poetry, but it definitely feels like the musical aspect is an essential part of what they want to get across with each song.

I agree somewhat, although I feel like there’s definitely a decent number of songs that would still work as poetry—where the music adds a definite extra layer to the lyrics, but where you could absolutely post a snippet of the lyrics on a floral background as an #aesthetic poetry post and it would still get something across.

…So, again, a spectrum between Song and Poem, like you said.
