Yeah like. Maybe someone who has control issues has also issues around certain sex acts/positions because of that related: sometimes someone just also has a firm preference. Not everyone likes everything equally, and 'everyone is a switch always' is no less baffling than 'everyone has a single preference for One Thing Only'
man, I can recommend you all an amazing a/b/o fic if you don't mind it being about minecraft youtubers (personas) (specifically hermitcraft) I can't usually stand a/b/o fic but when I find one that doesn't fall into those cliches, it's instant favorite lol. it seems a waste to set up this whole other spectrum of gender and sexuality and then just use it to recreate some of the gender and sexuality related bullshit we already have.
Grian is the protagonist because he's almost always the protagonist lmao. (I think it's partly bc of his popularity, partly bc he was the New Guy in s6 so there was a lot of fic by fans who were new to the series about him being new to the series.) The fic looks interesting but eugh. I don't think I've ever had such a bad case of immediate That Particular Kind Of RPF Squick from the way the character names are piped with the player/performer names. From the bottom of my heart, my condolences to the entire MCYT fandom that you have to live like this.
As far as ABO, I’d say it really depends on the personal taste of the author? Some people are presumably there because that’s specifically their kink. I’d hesitate to call it bad writing when it’s very probably done on purpose. It may be writing I don’t jive with, but it seems to be doing exactly what it set out to do? I’m not an ABO expert. I have an ambivalent relationship with it at best. But I would assert that ABO is very much about how the people writing and reading relate to gender, in sexual and other contexts. It’s often messy and problematic, and when it’s not your cup of tea, it’s probably really really not your cup of tea at all. I’d only say, try to keep Sturgeon’s Law in mind if you haven’t seen much and it was all crap.
I like A/B/O but my frustrations tend to be that I want f/f and also I just want it to be porn with no actual dealing with things. I just want like the setup of alphas and omegas and heat cycles and social expectations and whatever to just be a vehicle for a very specific kind of sex. I don't care about nor want to look into the implications of the setting and what this says about me as a butch or a transmasc. I just want Edelgard in heat thinking she can get through it well because she's a confident motherfucker only to be bedridden and then fucked hard by Byleth. I am a simple creature who really likes when people are reduced to being horny messes that just need a good dicking. There's been like one case where I've actually wanted to deal with the idea in more detail and it's specifically been like...The idea of an omega who is a top and who is dealing with the fact that everyone around her assumes that she's a bottom. With some even getting invasively weird about their insistence that she bottom. I want an omega who views her heat with like a sort of Disdain. Because whatever the body says it's not what she's most into and so it's just a fucking annoyance at best and absolutely miserable at worst. I want this with Baru Cormorant as the omega in question. This is my horrible dream fic. The one thing to actually make me go "Oh but I need an exploration of this outside of the bedroom". Like, yes, yes, we'll knot Baru and have her peg an alpha or whatever the shit. BUT. WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT IS. I think Baru would be fairly interesting to explore as a person in relation to like the sorts of sex roles that alpha and omega end up being stuck with stereotypically. Spoiler: Spoilers for the third Baru book Part of why this is so is because Baru being a top is plot relevant in the series she's from. Namely, they need an in with a particular political group but the issue is they have no one to marry this girl. Or even propose a marriage alliance. But Baru learnt that her now dead wife Tain Hu was a Stakhi lord and inherited an estate. And Stakhi gender customs mean that, so long as Hu acted as a man, she was viewed to be a man. Part of this being the preference for topping. Which Baru's got. Took her a bit to realize it but she's got it figured out that she's not a bottom. So with that and her ability to crossdress well, also learned from her dead wife, Baru is, in Stakhi culture, a man. And when she reveals all this to people, the group just kind of look at her and are like "What? We assumed you were a bottom lol wtf." To which Baru is like NOOO??? Another interesting idea with this would be to make Iscend an alpha. Because Iscend is, by her nature, a masochistic sub. She really does not have an interest in the sorts of things expected of alphas at all. This would also be interesting to fuck with since Iscend's a Clarified canonically. And I think her and Baru exploring that and working through the weird assumptions people make about them and their sex lives based off their personality traits would be fun. Because like people do very much make fucking assumptions about people. Like there's lots of people who just ASSUME that all butches are tops. When like no we're really not. Some of us are. But not all. So the exploration isn't like based on like reproductive health and such but instead on like. The weird fucking assumptions people make about the sex lives of people, especially queers, based on how they dress and act.

It comes to mind because it's apparent that it's not the case for many. That and like. I've seen fans of the genre who aren't in it just for the sex try to defend the genre by going "No one is here just for the sex!" and I am like. I am. I am here just for the sex. That is the sole reason I'm here with the exception of one very specific Baru idea I have. That's more of a fandom gripe though than a fanfic one. I do really kind of hate the inclination many have towards just throwing the perverts under a bus when defending their genres or communities though.
And one would think knowing that people would not go "Those people who are only here for sex aren't like us!" and yet I have seen it more than once...Shit gets weird when sex is so devalued.
I can’t read the spoiler yet because I’m still reading the books, but so far Big Agree about Baru. I don’t think most people are intending to write a thesis about gender and society, if it sounded like that. (That is kinda making me laugh, thinking about ABO fics as universally academic works about Living In A Society.) Just that there tends to be a lot of gender in the porn, even when escaping from gender is the point. The desire to escape is still saying something about it. Thinking about it more, I’m not sure that OOC is necessarily a bug instead of a feature. Imo, there are plenty of things that can be super hot when they’re written very thoughtfully with excellent characterization, or when the characters are vaguely person-shaped cardboard cutouts. In the middle lies the squick. Sometimes you just want filthy, filthy porn, and having characters who don’t act like you would normally expect places the scene at enough of a remove that it’s not uncomfortable even though it might otherwise be. I was reading an article on the use of color in the 70’s horror movie Suspiria, which does not look like a 70’s movie at all because of the richness and depth of the colors. It makes it feel unreal, and apparently that was intentional. Because they were setting out to create quite a gory movie, the intensity of the colors was to serve as a constant subtle reminder that the audience was safe, because they would never have encountered any setting that looked like that. So kinda like that, but using unreality so that you don’t have to think about implications while trying to enjoy porn.

(I keep getting this thread and the fandom gripes thread mixed up, fml) when authors of a canon-compliant shipping fic decide to rewrite canon scenes to replace the original character motivations with ones centered around the romance like I know this is a ship-centric fic but why you gotta make every single thing revolve around the romance? why you gotta remove all traces of outside influence and external motivation? maybe it's a silly thing to complain about but it just bothers me every time
