we are 14 days into 2022 and the nz taxpayers union (neither a union nor representative of taxpayers!) have picked a fight with furries on twitter because a media outlet that gets government funding did an article on furries. And there's a quote in here that is absolutely making me lose my shit lmfao:

It sure is!! It shatters Krakatoa's record - 4800km vs 9844km. Possibly more than 10,000km, but I haven't seen that confirmed yet by sources I trust. XD (Krakatoa was louder up close; the scientists I'm reading are wondering if there's some sort of atmospheric shenanigans involved in the extreme distance of audible sound.)

way too early to make any sort of pronouncement on overall eruption magnitude, because it's still going off albeit more sedately, but my money is currently on a VEI5. XD

I wonder if it carried that far because iirc there's nothing really between Tonga and Alaska with signifikant landmass whereas the Krakatoa Eruption had a bunch of other mountain ranges etc in the way?

 

I have seen that being speculated as part of the reason, but there are apparently some other closer locations that haven't reported hearing the noise, so last I saw they were thinking there must also be something else at play. It sounds like in general this volcano is going to keep a lot of scientists very busy for a few years tbh! Saw a tsunami specialist on TV this evening talking about how nobody had expected a tsunami of the size that happened - there have been other decent-sized volcanic tsunami, but it's incredibly rare to get one causing damage (and deaths!) right around the entire Pacific Rim.

Found a neat video busting myths on Yellowstone by the USGS!



(went looking for an explanation for the western snake river plain and apparently it's a graben, so, the crust is stretching apart and blocks are dropping down between others, forming in this case a fairly large intermontane basin that's filled up with a lot of sediments.)

Tonga volcano update - the main part of that spectacular umbrella cloud was around 35km high, but there was a smaller part of the eruption column that reached FIFTY-FIVE FUCKIN KILOMETRES into the atmosphere. Which is higher than Pinatubo reached - although to be fair this also suggests Pinatubo and other past very large eruptions might have had similar features, it's just that our satellite observation in 2022 is miles better than we had in 1991.

Ashfall was ~2cm, which unfortunately was enough to fuck with the crops. The undersea cable that was damaged probably won't be able to be accessed until February. Cause of that oceanic tsunami is still unknown, though I have seen speculation from the scientists who worked on that volcano that an eruption involving significant submarine lateral blast might have been enough to generate that sort of energy.

 

Also I finally made some progress on Rise yesterday! Think this might be one of the longer chapters to date, I have a great cliffhanger I rly wanna end on lol.

i've got two sort of main ongoing supporting characters coming in this chapter, and i also decided i might bring nickel in for a cameo. i think i may need to leave orion teaching ratchet's volunteers how to do Office Work for a side story tho, i was intending to have that happen soon but i've been slightly sideswiped by Plot. why, Plot, why.

 

always a bit weird talking about old drama, trying to find a medium between relaying the Facts without letting ur emotions get in the way, and also the immense relief of finding someone who actually sort of knows what you're talking about. i'm just never not going to be over the sheer number of people this one person managed to piss off in what really was a relatively small part of the fandom lol. In hindsight, not a great way to ensure the longevity of ur reputation.
