I've never played mass effect. I want to play mass effect. I own mass effect legendary. however I don't really feel like playing a dating sim

I'm not very good at it so far because I forget the keybinds for abilities and also that melee exists so I just run at things screaming with a pistol lol. but it is a hell of a lot of fun :D I do kind of wish you could take control of your squad members like you do in dragon age.

I'm also suffering from "can't read fanfiction yet because spoilers" after probably less than 8 hours of gameplay. I barely even know these guys but I'm already very fond of them

heartbroken they wont let me date almost any of the aliens in this one, and only the most human-looking one at that. what is the POINT of a scifi game with romance if you're not going to get weird!!

question - what's the point of no return for sidequests? I traveled to Noveria after finding Liara and finishing up in the Artemis Tau cluster, talked to a few squad members before leaving the ship, and all of them gave me concerningly endgame-sounding dialogue. is Noveria just the next step in the story, or is it a major turning point? should I go wander around for a while and maybe visit the Citadel again before going there?

also damn. I want to like Ashley. I really do. but she's such an god-loving daddy's girl military brat that it's just insufferable. how does a character who's never even been to earth manage to be this All-American(tm)

It has been ages since I last played (I really need to start my own trilogy playthrough sometime soon!), but checking around online it sounds like there are four main story quests on Therum, Noveria, Feros, and Virmire. If you've done all of those quests, then it's time to do side quests not based on the Citadel - the next time you visit the Citadel is the last time you can, as after that it shunts you into plot stuff. (That said, once you go to the Citadel, don't rush off it - there's apparently a couple side quests to grab there?)

thank you!! I'll probably spend some time wandering around, finish some side quests, maybe hit up the Citadel once, and then do Noveria and decide from there. ME has that common problem of "tons of sidequests but also people keep on talking about how urgent the main quest is" so it feels weird to stop and smell the roses :/

Note that in Mass Effect 2 the main quest is, in fact, urgent. Though I think you can sidestep that by completing as many sidequests as possible before
    the colonists get abducted.

pre-rating this Informative long before I will actually read it lol. good to know the quest is urgent tho!

is it worth it to have a romance in me1? I let Kaidan down easy, and now Liara is coming on to me... if only Wrex or Tali or Garrus were an option I would go for it in a heartbeat, but idk if my Shep would be interested in anything serious with Liara. BUT if a romance opens things up for you later I wouldn't want to miss that. can you go along with it and break it off? make it a short fling, kind of thing? bleah.

Nah. Liara's romance arc is rather sweet across the whole trilogy, but romances don't really unlock anything but the respective romance arcs
Also Tali and Garrus are options in the latter two games, gender-locked though.
But you're not going to miss out on anything major if you skip a romance in any of the games.

got to Virmire before leaving for work today! I am gonna beat the game tomorrow probably!! currently agonizing over FOMO because I dont want to bring the Wrong squadmates on the final missions and lose out on Optimal Story. I want to bring Wrex but the mission order guide I gave up and found after doing half the Cerberus stuff backwards recommends Liara and either Garrus or one of the humans. I think it's assuming I did romance, though (I eventually let Liara down easy too).

I realize I am probably overthinking this. this is why I don't often play this kind of rpg lol. however if squad choice actually does matter much I would be obliged for a nudge in the right direction :P

my penultimate impressions are: I really like how relatively short and compact this game is. I assumed it would be another week or two before I got through it! after the infinite nesting side quests of Bethesda games - actually, scratch that, of most recent big rpgs - it's nice how most of the sidequests here tie in to the main story, or at least have something to do with its structure. they feel less like pure self-indulgent exposition and more like setup for future plot. (not counting the stupid pinecone-finding assignments:P) the limited world also adds a sense of urgency and teases future exploration into areas that are referenced or hinted at but not yet relevant. (or at least, I hope it does. I have no idea how the world expands in the future games.)

I cant wait to finish and get into the next installment!

Are you on ME1 or ME2?

    vuatson [delurks]

ME1, but I was kind of overthinking it at least for that mission :P I do get continually anxious about squad choice, though. and mission order. really annoying when a story gets jarred out of place because you accidentally did something early or left something boring-looking but actually important until later.
