Possibly going to my first con in August! Lots of people say it's lazy but I'm gonna do a slowbro kigurumi because it looks mad comfy and cute

Anything I should know about conventions? It's not massive but it's also not small, and I have no idea what to expect

 

Shout out to my mum who when I told her I'd immortalised her garlic bread recipe and put it online for many to enjoy she was just like 'but that's?? Just how you make garlic bread?? How did they not know??'

Mum plz I love you but not everyone was home taught how to cook or had a freaking CATERING DEGREE like you did.

 

how can you say this and not link the good good garlic bread recipe? i am among the unwashed masses who does not know how to make my own garlic bread, teach me!

Lots of people, especially if you're not used to crowds. Lots of people, and personal space rules will be even more fucked than usual because nerds run the whole gammut between 'OMG I LOVE YOUR KIGU CAN I TOUCH IT' and 'jfc DO NOT come near me with a twenty foot pole I'm only here for the panels' - the latter type is usually not in cosplay but it ofc varies.

Everyone will be nerding out, and if the place isn't based at a hotel where you can buy rooms for the con (idk how far away or how long your con is) then the nearest hotel will typically also be full of geeks. Its a great place to meet friends! First time I met one of my now-ex gf's she was wearing a fursuit at a bigger con, lmao.

You will need more money than you expect, and be far more tired than you think. Bring lots of water, even if you're just twatting about, bc kigus are warm and you will sweat.

Speaking of, nerds also run the gammut of 'I NEED to wash twice a day or I'll die I hate germs and everyone has cooties' to 'who is personal hygiene idk her'. Be polite, but also be prepared for the latter kind, especially in gaming areas. Nerd sweat has a very distinct smell from gym sweat, and neither of them are particularly appealing.

Uh. Also, be careful in the evenings if you're the type to go to the discos, kareoke, and bars? Same rules as partying with any group of strangers, even if you've been hanging out with them all day.

I've been to a fair few cons, so here's some tips I've gleaned for not getting too overwhelmed:

• On your first day, take time to look around the convention center and see where things are. I also STRONGLY suggest keeping your eyes out for quiet spots in or around the convention center where you can go for a little breather if you need to, especially if your lodging isn't Right There.
• If you have a small comfort object or stim toy or something you can keep in your bag, that can be really nice! I also always bring my headphones so I can tune out the noise if I gotta. Know your needs there, and make sure you can meet them adequately.
• You'll most likely get a schedule with your badge--I highly recommend looking through it and noting things you want to go to like panels or meetups, and I'd even go so far as to mark down interesting shit with a pen on the schedule itself! A lot of cons have apps these days too, which is helpful, but be warned that they can sometimes be iffy in terms of actual functionality or up-to-date-ness. When in doubt, don't be afraid to ask a staff member!
  
• Even if it's "lazy," I think the Slowbro kigu is a great idea! Not everyone at cons goes for full-fledged cosplay, and it's perfectly acceptable to go in street clothes if the kigu gets too warm or whatever. No one is going to mind.

If I can suggest an addition: "Con plague" was a thing people joked about well before there was an actual plague. It's a big crowd of people in an enclosed space for a long time, we all know how that goes by now. If you want to take whatever precautions you feel are appropriate re: things like masks and hand sanitizer, it might save you from a nasty cold or a stomach bug.

 

...I'm realizing that Fanime this year, with its stringent and well-enforced mask policy, might be the first con I didn't get kinda sick from.
