Chills, Thrills and Spills: A Horror Thread

Work is stressing me out, so I've been watching horror to relax.

The Old Ways 4/5 More action packed then I was expecting, love old women characters who are the only ones with the knowledge/have their shit together. She reminds me of the woman from Aterrados even though their methods for dealing with the monsters in their respective films are completely opposite each other. There should be more older women as protagonists in horror films.

The Aftermath 2.5/5 Pretty predictable movie where a woman sees things in the house and her husband thinks she's crazy, but she's right. Not very original but I liked the characters so I sat through to the end to see if they would make it.

The House at the End of Time (La casa del fin de los tiempos) 4/5 Really liked this one! Interesting concept, with another protag who's an old woman.

 

The Wasteland 2/5 Watching this was a waste of time. It's basically The Babadook but boring. Lot's of shots of people shooting things in slow motion, and then just sitting around doing nothing.

The 8th Night 3.5/5 Love when horror movies have detectives as one of the main characters. I guess I can add that to some of my favorite horror things next to old women protags. Gave it a bit of a lower score because it's not very scary and I would have liked it better if they didn't over explain things. It's still worth a watch despite that.

 

Evidence: 3.7/5 A found footage film I'd never heard of! It was pretty good, but some of the camera work made me feel a little sick.

Guy wants to film a documentary about his friend and takes them out hiking. At some point they start hearing weird noises at night, and then see something strange. A weird man wanders into their campsite and asks if they've seen his dog before leaving just as suddenly. Everyone but the camera man are getting creeped out by the weird noises so one of them tries to leave. When tensions escalated and the camera guy was being a real asshole about the fact that his friend hadn't come back I was surprised that neither of the two women slapped him. He finds his friends dead body in the woods, but instead of telling the women says he's going to go for help. They are attacked by the monsters and leave the rv, and while running through the woods find the camera man's dead ripped open body. After this it's just a lot of running around from house to house while being attacked by monsters everywhere. Finally they run into some people, but one of the men starts making the same weird noises as the monsters, and that's when the army shows up. Government experiment gone wrong, with zombies? Not sure what was going on but at one point we come across dog monsters? And a heavily pregnant dead woman implied to be giving birth to the monsters we've been seeing.

 

Okay, would a decent definition of body horror be "any major restructuring of the body that the body's inhabitant survives" and if they don't survive it's just gore? I feel like there's a distinction there but I might have it wrong.

 

I don't know what the generally agreed upon definition is but my own is any major restructuring of the body, end of. It don't gotta be alive.

Though, major restructuring could possibly be a positive thing sometimes, like I wouldn't necessarily call an overly enhanced cyborg body horror, but others possibly would? It's really subjective since the word "horror" itself is defined by perceptions of the individual

 

Oh! Another example I just thought of: the plot of Coraline:

The whole plot revolves around a witch trying to sew buttons on coraline's eyes, and I would interpret that as body horror even though it's a very small change

Black Mountain Side: 2/5 Not very good, plot was all over the place and the special effects were not very well done.

 

The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan: 4/5 Good found footage movie except for some decisions on the part of the main character.

Leah's investigating an unsolved murder for a college documentary project but doesn't think to double check footage as she goes along. Could have saved her a lot of trouble later. Probably wouldn't have come back to the house where people were ax murdered if she'd seen the woman who was right behind her when she was filming. The creepy ghost woman who looked just like the scary ass children's drawings someone she interviewed gave her. Why would you ignore a police officer when he says he doesn't think you should go in the house. This is the one movie I've seen where a woman does dumb shit a man would normally do.

 

Horror in the High Desert: 3.5/5 Pretty good, if a bit slow. I like when found footage horror movies are presented as documentaries.

Oh, I just remembered that this thread exists! I don't suppose anyone could identify this film from a scene I saw on twitter but haven't been able to find since? Or at least help me to figure out how to find it?

The scene: POV is on a woman sitting at the wheel of a car, outside a small house with another lady standing outside. The camera is focussed so that woman#1 is in the foreground in profile, looking out the driver's side window to woman#2, who is out of focus as she approachs the car. Woman#1 is noticeably on edge.

Woman#2 slaps her hand on the window, making the (protagonist?) jump. However, she relaxes slightly when woman#2 straightens up as though to look over the roof of the car.

And then woman#2's head twists downwards abruptly from the shoulders, as though her neck is snapped or semi-severed. The upside-down face grins at woman#1, and the clip ends here.

Any ideas? Also idk if that should be spoilered because I don't know if it's a twist in that piece of media, I just can't get it out of my head ^^;;;

Moloch: 4/5 Someone in the comments said this was a Hereditary knock off, so I guess that means I have to watch Hereditary because I really liked this movie.

Man has a bad break up with his girlfriend and while driving stops at a rest stop in the middle of nowhere to burn stuff that she gave him. He gets super drunk in the process and of course wakes up and needs to use the bathroom and that's where the movie gets into the weird stuff. He gets locked in the bathroom and there's someone in the stall next to him. They have a talk that's very cryptic, and they introduce themselves. The man in the other stall is voiced by J. K. Simmons who was the voice of Stanford Pines on Gravity falls. So Ford has gone from being tricked by an eldritch abomination to being one himself. See this isn't a bathroom, or it's not only a bathroom, and the man isn't really a man but a god. He tries to look through the hole in between the stall and is told not to look at the god but does anyway and gets knocked out. The eldritch abomination is very polite which is hilarious.

The abomination gives his backstory and talks about how the universe was created. He was created to destroy all life in the universe. Tells Wes that the only way he's getting out is to satisfy the god's physical form. "you thought your human penis was going to save the universe?!" The god tells him he actually needs his liver and slides him a piece of glass. After some back and forth arguing the god guilt trips him into giving up his liver but saying don't you want to save your girlfriend? Wes cuts himself open with the glass and pulls out his liver. Then it's implied he's a murderer and that he murdered multiple women along with his girlfriend? That's why Wes was chosen, because he and the god are creatures of pure destruction.

This movie was ok, I'm still not sure how to feel about it.

 

I mean...i appreciate the creativity. It sounds a little difficult to make look interesting, cinematography wise. How'd they do there? I ask because I don't watch horror, only read it sometimes XD

 

Some of the cgi was a bit iffy, but other than that it looked fine? I mean, it takes place in a filthy rest stop bathroom, but there was some interesting graffiti in there to look at? And sometimes there would be flashbacks that took place outside the bathroom and those looked good.
