Moved on like the pressure of that repression is the fuel of a rocket hurtling us forward, maybe. Driven by it and attached to it but technically moved just barely ahead of it, perhaps.

"Get off!" You tear yourself from Herald's grip, giving him a hard push before walking off in a fury. If you could, you would just have walked out of here, but after stomping through one of the puddles, you realize you are trapped on a rooftop.

Fuck! Did he plan it that way? Just to make sure you had to listen to him? You approach the edge, looking out over the distant city, weighing your choices.

You're not really in danger here. If you wanted to, you could take over Herald, make him drop you off, and adjust his memories so he would forget it ever happened. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be smart. Even if you do your best, there's no guarantee you'll be able to hunt down every single reason why he sought you out in the first place, so you'd just risk repeating this incident.

Not to mention that yet another incident of mental manipulation among the Rangers increases the risk of somebody connecting the dots. Did Herald tell anybody he was going after you? Did any cameras spot him? What about the people on the street? Did anyone snap a picture?

"Umm…" Herald has walked up behind you, not daring to reach out and touch. "I'm…sorry?"

You want to slap him hard, break into his mind and show him who's boss, but you don't. Too many unknowns, the safest thing is to keep playing powerless and see what he wants. Even if his entitlement makes you fume.

"Whatever." You let out a long sigh, trying to make your fists unclench as you turn around. His feet aren't even wet. Yours are. "Don't ever do that again."

"Understood." He nods as he says the word, looking suitably chastised.

"Now, what is going on here? I assume you have a reason for…all this." You gesture around the rooftop, keeping your voice hard. You can feel the brittle nervousness under his smooth surface, and you want to keep him off guard. No need to encourage behavior like this in the future. Ortega is bad enough at showing up unexpectedly, and Herald can fly.

"It just seemed faster this way."

"Faster?" You can't help the look of disbelief on your face, but he really seems to mean it. He saw nothing odd at all with yanking a near-stranger off the street and dumping them on a rooftop. You had forgotten how entitled heroes could be.

"Sorry," he says, starting to pick up on the fact that this wasn't his best idea. "I realize this might come off as a little strange. I just keep thinking of you as…well, I mean, Sidestep."

You sigh. Deeply. So that's it, then? Fuck. He still thinks of you as a hero. As one of them. And you suppose he's got a point. A decade ago, you wouldn't have thought twice about getting pulled off the street like that; Sentinel had done it more than once when he was in a hurry. But that was a lifetime ago. For you…

It's starting to dawn on you that it might not seem that way to Herald.

Would things have been different if they were? If they apologized for what they did? You forcibly erase that thought from your head. They never would. In their minds, they would have no reason to. Opening your eyes, you look at Herald once more.

"Why are you so desperate?" You think you know, but you want to hear it.

"Because if you are losing your powers, it could affect a lot of people." The admission comes, just as you thought.

"Including you," you say dryly.

"Including me."

"Fine…you can stop worrying." You let out a breath, running a hand over your head as you look out over the city once more. "It was…a telepathic assault that caused that whole Heartbreak mess. I think my mind shut down my powers to protect me." The lump in your throat proves impossible to swallow. "I might have gone insane otherwise."

"But that would mean that you could…" You can hear the eagerness in his voice; you have to move fast.
