The thing about delivering all your flashbacks (narrative) in the form of flashbacks (traumatic) is that it gives your protagonist a strong incentive to never even mention their backstory.

Fallen Hero is a cautionary tale about narrative conflicts of interest.

 

Can't decide whether joke-deflecting again is playing into her hands, or a solid defense in the form of refusing to flinch away to something more revealing...

"That doesn't mean I don't care." Her voice is filled with concern, and you hate the fact that you can feel the way she means every word. She really does want to help you.

"Even if you do care, it doesn't really matter." She wants to help the person she thinks you are. Not the one that's actually sitting here.

"Will you answer one question, Josie?" When you don't interrupt, she cautiously continues. "Do you trust anybody?"

"I…" You give her the credit of pausing before answering, taking the question seriously. Do you trust anybody? What is trust even? You could trust Ortega to try to save your life, but you could also trust her to try to stop you if she knew the truth. Could you trust her to keep a secret if you told it to her? Could you trust her to not look at you in disgust and sell you out at the first opportunity?

And Dr. Mortum…you can't trust her but can Barbara? Maybe, but is a trust built on deceit really trust at all? If she knew the truth, would she understand why you did what you did? Lied to her?

That's a laugh. If you're honest about this, you're not even sure you can trust yourself. The things you've done. The choices you've made. The person you were ten years ago would be horrified.

Sighing softly, you look up at the patient face of Dr. Finch. She thinks she's trustworthy. She thinks she won't let you down. She thinks she can help you.

But she also thinks you're a person.

...I want to pick the option that's not what Josie thinks their handlers wanted. We've got something of a pattern of autonomy by defiance going on here, from stated motivations for villainy to jokes as deflection from therapy, and I want to continue that trend.

When you started out, after your escape, you didn't trust anybody with your face, let alone your (fake) name. Sidestep was everything. Your mask, your identity, the way you interacted with the world. Josie was a shadow, drifting between temporary shelters and even more temporary names, trying to make sense of a world in which you had no purpose.

Sidestep had one. Not you.

And then came Ortega and little by little she dragged Josie out of hiding, first half a face, shown reluctantly while drinking, then a name to avoid far worse nicknames, then a whole face that had started out as an accident, but there was no turning back, and suddenly there you were in civilian clothes, and you were a part of something. Had friends. Allies.

None of which knew the truth. Would anything have changed if you had told them back then?

Maybe. But you never dared to risk it. Better half a life than none, and you heard the way they talked about Re-Genes. As if they weren't human. As if they were just weapons. And maybe you were, but you wanted to be more, and that had to count for something, right?

I'm leaning more 3rd option, there's things we expect of people, anticipate them doing and plan on, but that's a very different kind of trust than honesty

 

We are very tempted to lie. Then again, "trust" is a relative term…​

I'm also inclined to 3 for Josie's actual feelings. I think option 1 will be, in the game, somewhat honest instead of being deflection, though.

"Aren't they, though?" You don't bother to hide the bitterness. "If they put on an act to make people treat them a certain way, isn't that a lie?"

"You're phrasing it so grimly." This time she's the one that smiles, a soft one. "A world with only truth in it would be a world filled with pain as well. Everyone needs the little lies to get through life."

"Everyone needs masks." You don't phrase it as a question because it's not. You know people try to hide what they are, but you can see through them. You can see their lies, their pretense. You can see what they are hiding from themselves. What are you hiding?

"Sometimes masks can be as real as the people who wear them."

"Am I, though?" The words surprise you; did they come from your mouth? They did, and you keep talking as if she had hit your knee, reflexes making your leg jerk without conscious input. "Am I real?" The tears sting, so you blink them away and hope she doesn't notice.

"Do you feel like you're not?" She seems surprised at the shift; you can feel her excitement. You're finally opening up.

"You'll have to ask someone else about that," you say, looking away. "Those are the opinions that matter."

"No, that's not true. I don't care about what other people say about you; I care about what you think."
