i'm thinking of doing fairly oddparents characters as gems, as far as "gemsonas" go. (meaning norm the genie, mostly, since i'm, well, me.) this is hella immature of me, i know, but i look at that and am like, "haha, prostitute gem" that or a gem that's a proust fan or a gem that has sex for proust books, haha yep. there absolutely have to be gem duplicates! like, i don't think there are unlimited kinds of gems, yet... there are implied to be many gems. thus, many gems of the same kind! also, i really like the idea of autistic pearl. as well as steven and connie, who were mentioned in the autistic headcanons thread of the Sperglord Forum. in a way, i'm kinda sad that i didn't spot that stuff myself. they sure are - like, so far, as separate gems, that's just about all they've really done: be hella cute queer representation. which is nice but... a bit unsatisfying. like, what else do they do when they aren't garnet? what drew them to each other? have they ever gotten in conflict with each other? stuff like that... the consensus is that she ended up in canada, i think.
Another point on the gem duplicates front is the line Rose says about life on earth all having unique experiences - implying that gems, as a rule, don't. That plus the comments about Pearl and the very fact of kindergartens makes it sound like the whole race is mass-produced and probably purpose-produced (IE, need more technological workers? make more peridots). I'm fairly sure we'll get a Corundum Episode once things have calmed down a bit. (Did you know that rubies and sapphires are actually color variations of the same mineral? Now you do!) Likewise, I'm sure that we'll eventually get more Lapis backstory because holy shit does she drop some tantalizing hints if you deconstruct her lines.
yep. never really thought about the unique experiences line that way before, but i like that interpretation. really? no wonder ruby and sapphire are so compatible! :D and yeah, lapis has some of those things that i find so fascinating about norm the genie - the being trapped, mostly - so yeah, her backstory probs would interest me. :D
The Steven Universe fandom has made all my years of being a gemstone nerd worth it, tbh. (Technically "sapphire" refers to the gem in all but two color variations - rubies (which are a pinkish red) and padparadscha, a pink-orange variety. Yes, I had to look up the spelling.) Also potentially worth noting are star sapphires, which is when the gem has very thin inclusions (gemstone speak for "there is a rock inside this other rock") that cause it to refract light into a star shape. They're usually six-rayed stars, but sometimes occur in twelve-ray (two six-rays on top of each other) and cat's-eye (two-ray) variations.
oh yeah been meaning to ask this for a while - does anyone else headcanon the credits song being sung by rose quartz? i like to think that rose wasn't as wonderful as everyone says she was (but probably pretty close) seeing as the show runs on themes of very realistic character portrayal in terms of not having 100% good or 100% bad characters but all flawed (therefore relatable) characters. it also shows very realistic portrayals of grief, and something people tend to do when a person dies is remember how wonderful they are without all the things they disliked, if they were loved beforehand. essentially forever putting them on a pedestal, of sorts. i know the voice actor is different than the person singing. of course i could just be over thinking things and it could be a general statement about every character in the show. or both, that would be cool too! what do ya'll think?
Dumb thing I realized - the one gem shown with visible cleavage (Rose Quartz) is a mineral with no cleavage. (strictly speaking, of the gems shown so far, only alexandrite has good cleavage at all, although both sugilite and peridot have some poor cleavage)
... laughs hysterically Though, on that note, there's this theory, and diamonds have perfect cleavage...
I'm not overfond of that theory thematically, but if it turns out to be true I'm gonna laugh my ass off about this.

OK OK i tried to make a gemsona but got caught up on... everything. so instead i made gemsonas of my favorite OCs. Spoiler: OC geeking 1: Taylor - Blue Topaz (weapon: magic-wand-type thingy) Her personality is fairly reserved; she's quiet and prefers to view things from afar, though she has a generally cheerful disposition. She is caring and wants to help anyone in need, though she will follow orders and instructions with completely and with precision. When thrown into the thick of things she tends to stress out and looks for advice and direction. She advises Onyx, though she typically defers to her judgement. She would have joined Rose Quartz's rebellion, but she wasn't brave enough to take the risk. She can't decide if she's disappointed or relieved. 2: Mickey - Black Onyx (weapon: dual-wield sickles) She is aggressive, flippant, loud, on the surface the complete opposite of her close friend and colleague, Topaz. She likes to feel useful and in charge of the situation, so when things start moving beyond her, she freaks out a little. She is very, very loyal to the chain of command, which somewhat surpasses her loyalty to friends. Like Topaz, she follows orders to the letter, though with far more exuberance. She is told to eliminate a threat and she does it. She takes advice and council from Topaz, who usually has a wider view of the situation. She thinks that anyone who joined Rose Quartz was a fool, and she pities and looks down on them. When it comes up, she reassures Topaz that she made the right choice because that's the only answer that makes sense to her. It's important to note that she doesn't think Topaz is an idiot for being tempted. Fusion: ?????????????? (weapon: scythe???) I think they'd be a sort of tag-team for special assignments, maybe quelling native uprisings on conquered worlds/worlds-to-be-conquered. Help on gems or thoughts could be cool
Somehow I never realized Sour Cream and Onion were brothers until tonight's episode, despite them being themed now.
Well, maybe technically half-brother or stepbrother. Onion certainly looks more directly related to their dad.
Some of Amethysts behavior in the later episodes comes off as sorta BPD, so I'm interested to see what you think of those when you get to them :) I think part of the reason people find Pearl so appealing is because of her EXCELLENT facial expressions. I mean.
