I am actually not upset at the thread digression. You'd think I'd known more about the Norse stuff being married to Skuld and all.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Snapewives yet. For shame.

Re: being Queen of the Fairies. That is A Thing in some folklore, so unless you believe that there are true fairies who have a reality not captured by any single mythology, then it's legit - the concept of a Queen of the Fairies, I mean, not the belief that you are she.

If I was currently 15 years old there is no way I wouldn't be an otherkin. As it stands when I actually -was- 15 years old otherkin were definitely a thing that I looked into, but there really was no central easily accessible community like tumblr offers. A person I was dating at that time totally believed he was actually a vampire though, and tried to convince me I might be angelkin or some sort of animalkin, but I never really cared that much about it I guess. Now I'm just too old and too skeptical and went the furry route instead.

There's a lot of overlap between the furry and otherkin communities, I'm sure there always has been but it seems extra prominent on tumblr. I'm not sure if it's that much different now than it was then, but it seems like a lot more adults are involved in the otherkin community and ID as otherkin. It really bothers me to be honest in a way I can't place. It almost feels 'irresponsible' to me for adults to be perpetuating that belief set? And just like it's something that they should have either grown out of or rationalized their feelings in other ways, like animal totems or 'I identify with some of the traits of this animal but am not actually this animal' or something that doesn't involve a lot of suspension of disbelief.

It could be that the definition of otherkin is changing from when I was looking at it, you do get a lot of people saying they don't think they actually are x animal, it's just a spiritual thing. Which bugs me a lot less for adults to still be all about, and just bugs me a lot less in general. I just don't want to perpetuate the whole 'I am this and I do x uncontrollable things because of my kintype' beliefs that as much as tumblr otherkin like to No True Scotsman about, actually do happen.

Hands up if you were the uncritical enabler friend who was also angelkin!

. . . I went through a lot of typical weird-teenager stuff at different ages than a lot of people, partly I think because the ages of 12 through 14 involved rather a lot of hands-on training in deflecting sexual harassment so as to avoid physical harm. Also museums.

Joining the 'so glad I hadn't heard of otherkin at a younger age' club. Until maybe 11 or so, I was having the standard ~gifted child~ existential depression sort of thing, and was disgusted by atrocities around the world and so on, and did not want to identify with humanity. (These days, I quite gladly call myself a fairy, but in the sense that other people have called me that all my life, and my family have lots of weird parallels with fairy folklore. I like to believe that we're the sort of people who encourage fairy mythology.)

Question: did your tiger identity dissipate as the angel one developed?

This is all super fascinating, but unfortunately I can only contribute two things to this specific conversation.

One is that the fact that there was a Norse goddess named Frigga will never not be hilarious to me.

The other is that I keep misreading "sharding" as "sharting" and giggling like a maniac.
