Soemtimes dead trolls don't stay dead. Or like, they're dead, but they're still moving around, when the sun is out. One of the reasons no one in their right mind goes outside during the day. They slowly decay, but I've seen purely skeletal ones. I can very barely manage one of them, they tend to be nasty, and besides Hallow's Dawn, I don't know of any way to actually put them to rest.
And the Empire really doesn't like people practicing Hallow's Dawn, but good fences make good neighbours, savvy? And it's more common in lowblood areas.

 

So is 'shadowdropper' a general term for your world's undead, or does it refer to a specific kind?

 

I don't think there's another kind of undead?
Unless you count rainbowdrinkers, but those are fictional.

 

What's Hallow's Dawn?

 

It's a thing that happens once a sweep! People carve orange gourdfruits, uhm, pumpkins? to show faces and put candles inside, and they house lingering spirits so the Handmaid can collect them!

The story goes that a really fucking long time ago, there was this burgundy psychic Hallow, who was strong enough to lay the dead to rest, heard a knock on her hive door, and found a headless shadowdropper in front of it. She invited it in, discerned the missing head was why it came to her, and since she had some pumpkins from the market, she carved it a head from that - and when she put the pumpkin on its neck, it started glowing from the inside. The shadowdropper thanked her and went its way, but she found the pumpkin in front of her doorstep the next dusk, not glowing any more. Ever since then she carved pumpkins during that time.
Nowanights people tend to put candles inside, to symbolize the souls.
The Empire doesn't like the tradition, because it's about sharing and helping each other, but if the neighbourhood is good you won't get into trouble.
Some bypass that by sneaking the pumpkins to crossroads and other traditionally liminal spaces.

 

We have a couple of subtypes with their own variations, mostly because of our world's connection to the Outlands, but there are a few main groups. There are wiedergaenger, which are risen corpses. Most are raised by someone intentionally, but revenants can raise themselves sometimes in order to avenge themselves. There are ghosts. They're immaterial and can't hurt you physically but they're full of emotions and only stick around because they're real unhappy. There are undead that keep their identites- various types of vampire usually. Something about the feeding connection to humanity helps them keep part of themselves, for all the good it does them. Then there are the truly brought back, which has to be done intentionally and goes wrong most of the time. I think there are maybe five confirmed in all history?
