Well, you should. *sighs* It's not people expecting me to make my own choices that I'm unused to. I have been doing that for years. It's more that... people think of me the way I think of Rose. Being on the other side of that. It's... not something I'm used to. Never really noticed it, during the Rebellion, if it even happened then.

 

B-but... You're the only Pearl we all can look up to! You are better than Rose Quarz! B-because... because you showed us that we c-can... Can defy orders!

It was her Rebellion. I just decided to join it. For her, really. For myself too, I suppose, but she was... is... important to me and to it. *sighs*

Rose was a truly great person and I am not making light of the fact that she was one of the only Gems to show empathy or to value things that we did not create. But all her life she was expected to be great and noble and proud and wise. You chose to be all those things, even though you were meant not to be.

I think that's just as important. As hard as it is for a privileged Gem to accept that our society is decadent and invasive, it wasn't like everyone told her that her thoughts weren't important and her mind was supposed to be weak because they tried and failed to break it before she emerged.

She was a Quarz, fighting is their thing.

Well, I suppose those are differences. But that's all they are. Differences. They don't make me better, or her worse.

She did help me see my value, too, though. If I had been left to myself, I don't know if I could've, honestly. So it wasn't everyone telling me I wasn't important, before the Crystal Gems. It was everyone but her.

I don't think Rose was worse than you. I've always admired her. You're both braver than me. You're the Crystal Gem Rebellion. I'm just the pirate, Watermelon Tourmaline. Sure, I steal things the colonies need, and sabotage their installations when I can, but I lead an essentially selfish life, and I know I only delay the inevitable. That's why I travel with all this stuff and keep all of these records. Someday if I survive the Diamond Authority..."

 

I'm a pirate. Sometimes I take things that rich people don't take care of...

That is useful, too. Earth is not the only planet in need of defending after all, and us Crystal Gems cannot be everywhere. *sighs* Though I am sure if Rose was able to be everywhere, she would have. She did have such a love for life, Gem and human and plant and animal and likely beyond. A love which Steven has inherited.
