how do i get myself to eat/drink when it feels like it might make me throw up?

    so, this week, my throat has been feeling constricted, tighter, as though something is blocking it, and my over-reactive gag reflex has became over-over-reactive. as a result, i've pretty much stopped eating and drinking, 'cause doing either of those things makes me feel like i'm going to vomit. which is bad, since the doctor has said that by not eating and drinking, i only make the acid in my stomach, which might be what's causing this, worse. and that if this problem is a result of me being constipated, i need to drink more water - which is tricky, given this.

    so, uh, do i get myself to eat?

    foods my sensory system can is able to handle, most of the time, and well, likes:
    salmon soup (salmon in mushroom soup)
    just plain salmon with salt on it
    T-bone steaks
    pediasure (a nutrition, meal replacement/supplement drink)
    chocolate mousse royale from baskin robbins (my fave)
    chocolate, mostly dark, and chocolate chips

    yeah...

    @rigorist that is totally not a possible solution to this. like, i don't know if pot is even legal here and i'm not at the point of risking addiction or whatever to solve this problem. then again, that may've been a joke. no offense, but... any serious answers, guys?

    If Pediasure is the only thing you can drink without vomiting I'd go for that. Or SlimFast, or Carnation Instant Breakfast. Not exactly complete proteins or whatever, but you certainly won't go malnourished, and the nutrients will help you feel full. Have you tried just sipping at chicken or beef boullion/broth?

    Where's the gag reflex? Is it in your throat or in your stomach? I ask because I had something like this happen to me once. I wasn't able to swallow for two days, and then after that everything that hit the back of my throat made my stomach queasy. I lost ten pounds in a month. I was put on acid reflux medication and it didn't help. As it turns out, it was a physical symptom of deteriorating mental health--psychosomatic, I guess. So I know you don't mean to do this but because of my experience I'm now like protective-parent-level concerned about your health. :C

    If this continues more than a few days I'd suggest seeing a GP, honestly.

    When I had inflamed tonsils I lived on applesauce and soup. I lost a lot of weight but as you see I´m still here. Ginger helps with nausea, but not sure if it´ll do you any good.

    Oh, and part of the gag reflex might be because you are dehydrated. Can you suck on anything in your mouth right now? If so, try Luden's throat drops. They're not sugary-salty, they're not menthol/numbing, they're just to help you keep your mouth wet. Helps with my cotton mouth. Tic-Tacs might also work, especially the white ones will help with nausea (mint helps with nausea. Mint tea too).

    @pixels pediasure and water (which i thought was obvious). and yeah, that list is basically the only foods i eat All The Time, not just when sick with this. which, btw, being sick is making me throw up my pediasure. i think i should've made it clearer, haha.

    it feels like it's in my throat. and i technically can swallow - it just makes me feel like i'm gagging when i do it. and yep, i take acid reflux medicine - it's a regular thing for me but rarely ever this bad. like, normally, i can eat without gagging.

    you being concerned is alright, as long as it doesn't get in the way of your own life, i think.

    and hmm, i'll ask mom if anything like that is there. i don't like tics tacs, though - too minty.

    and i saw a doctor. is a gp different?

    @littlemissCodeless doesn't seem like exactly my problem, but thanks!

    By "GP" I meant general practitioner. If this keeps up you might want to see a gastroenterologist (specialist for digestive system/liver) though. And Ricola herbal cough drops might work just as well, since they're merely herbal and don't contain anything too horribly chemically processed.

    @pixels hmm, i think the doctor i saw was a gp, then. also, yeah, that's already been discussed.

    and thanks!

    It's not gonna be sunshine while you're dealing with this, but you'll get through it. Feelings are temporary, even physical ones. Good thoughts, and hugs if you want them.

    @pixels thanks!

    and in a similar vein to your throat drops suggestion, i sucked on some ice cubes. which is something i like doing anyway, haha. so you were a help, 'cause your suggestion inspired that. (i mean, unless sucking ice cubes is a bad idea for some reason i'm unaware of, haha.)

    and yeah, it'll pass. i'm sure of that. i just want it to pass really soon.

    I was going to suggest ice chips. They're fine to use.

    My gag reflex sometimes gets the better of me too. Oddly enough, really crunchy things, especially things like cheese curls, go down better than softer foods.

    Does using a straw help?

    @Ink a straw? i don't think so, particularly.

    I wonder if there's a way to trick your gag reflex by freezing something with more nutrients than water, then sucking on it until it all goes down your throat. Unfortunately, I am horrible in the kitchen, so I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

    Yeah. When I'm having trouble getting food down, the longer I chew and think about it, the worse it gets. Sometimes just sending something straight down my gullet with a quick suck on a straw works better.

    (BTW, that was supposed to be *cheese curls*. LOL. I fixed it.)

    @pixels i don't think there's anything like i'd want to freeze. or that it'd come out of the process well.

    @Ink yep, when it takes a long time, it is worse

    Elaienar "sorta spooky"

    Some people freeze meat broth (chicken, mostly, I think) for times when you can't eat solid food or don't want/like it hot. I've never tried it myself, though.

    Not joking. That is one of the medical uses.

    @Elaienar thanks!

    @rigorist i might've heard about that. but still, pot was not all what i was expecting, and not all something i expected to be able to do anything with. like, imagine me telling my Mom that:
    "i think that marijuana would help with my throat/gagging problem. yes, i'm suggesting this in a medical way - i'm not looking for an excuse to try pot. yes, this sounds kinda ridiculous but the science says it can work."
    like mom would take me seriously but goddamn... that'd be an embarrassing thing to say, i think.
