Thank you both! I always love the effect of variegated wool against black or white. So cool. I'm not...100% sold on where I cropped the chart. I think it's a little bit unbalanced. But I'll finish a repeat and then decide if it needs to change. Knitting is such slow trial and error -_-
Yeah, I *love* that look - I've been scheming about getting knitpicks Chroma with one solid and one color-changing one. Is there any chance you could post that chart? It's lovely. :D No pressure if you don't want to, obvs.
Oh that is pretty wool. I really like Red Velvet and Sandpiper. I'm knitting this thing with this yarn in Cold Fire. I've had really good results doing that exact thing with this pattern, if you like music & fingerless mittens! I've also seen some really cool effects where people use two different colour-change yarns that contrast, and that can look sooo cool. I can absolutely post the chart, tho not right now because I'm on my phone & about to go to sleep. I'll put it up in the morning! Actually, I might put a few versions up for feedback.
Can anyone explain to me a bit of this pattern: http://www.twosheep.com/helix/Helix5.pdf I'm struggling with the, uh, second to last symbol in the key- it shows up in the left side of the seventh row. Is "skipping" here the same as "slipping?" How am I supposed to knit the skipped stitch if I'm leaving the other one on the needle? ????
I managed to get pretty far in that pattern even with my loose interpretation of that symbol, but then I read a row backwards and tried to undo some cabling to fix it, and ended up twisting it farther in the same direction instead of untwisting it, and then just gave up and bound off. It looks really cool though! And I want to do it in better yarn, anyway, to make a scarf for my rad former genetics teacher/rec letter writer.
argh - part of me thinks that i might like knitting or crocheting, but the (minor) pain of making sure none of my materials are actual wool really puts me off. :/ and also another thing to learn, time, blah blah blah whine whine. but arm knitting looks rad. and i love the look of knit stuff, i just can't use wool...
It's actually super easy to find soft acrylic yarns! I have some pretty notable sensory issues regarding texture... not so much that I can't knit wool, but I definitely can't wear it near my skin. I like to pick yarns based on how awesome they feel when I'm knitting them, though, and I can find both Caron Simply Soft and Lion Brand Homespun (which make my brain do the happy dance of glee while I work with them) not only at Michael's, but at Meijer's (a localish supermarket, kinda like Target). And the arm knitting project I did above actually used a fully acrylic yarn too. Basically, if you're on the fence, just head to a store where they sell yarn and go around petting it. This is, believe it or not, totally normal.
@bluefox i think i found how to do it! it's demonstrated in this video here (just skip to a row that includes "RT"). knitting while leaving the previous stitch on definitely looks tricky, but probably the sort of thing you get the hang of after a few goes.
@Kaylotta I don't really like acrylics, but knitting with bamboo is nice. It's got a smooth, soft texture which is probably good for crochet as well as knitting. Ah...maybe don't go to a store and stroke the yarn tho. Most of them are wool/acrylic blends, and you've usually got to handle them to check the quantity. Online is good!
@blue Right twist stitch. The last symbol in the key is a left twist stitch - almost the same, but knitting the 2nd stitch through the back loop gives you a twist in the other direction.
Charts! Not numbered, sorry. They have red lines every ten stitches though. So this is the original big chart. It should tile, though I haven't tested it: This is the chart I'm using now. My knit version is mirrored, because I knit a row in black after casting on and went "do I care about this? ...No." I reckon the main curl of the vine is slightly too far to the right (or the left, in my knit version): This is another crop I made. For this one, I think the main curl is too far to the left. I think what would probably be best is something between this one and the one above.:
I can knit a little, but I've never picked up crochet and I'm better by far with a needle and thread - I can sew most things with various levels of success with my machine, and I dabble in embroidery now and then. Have the pouch I made for my insulin and test kit a couple of years ago from a scrap piece of denim and whatever embroidery thread I had left over at the time -
realized I forgot to post a couple finished pics from Christmas! Spoiler: a gift for pixels Spoiler: gift for family exchange ^^ i literally finished this one the day it was being given away, so i had to photo it instead of scanning it T_T Spoiler: and jesse's gift, scanned
This is a neat idea. Much too mild in London for it to be worth it, but maybe some of you folk who get more variable weather would be interested.
