I'm from Livejournal and I'm used to the social aspect of fandom so it gets kinda old refreshing tumblr all day waiting to get popular in place of human interaction
As far as I know lj is pretty much dead and uh... there's 4chan
Where are y'all secretly making friends lol

Here. There are plenty of threads where I can scream about shipping, meta, and lore, and not just about "popular" fandoms, either. You can also proselytize on here a little bit.

I don't like Tumblr's UI and I don't curate a fandom-specific reblog-blog (2x2verse is my writing blog more than a Homestuck blog). The people whose writing I thought was awesome and who I wanted to make friends with, I tagged and devoted fics to, and now we're friends. My close friends, I've taken out of the Tumblr realm (did I mention I hate Tumblr's new UI), and now we pretty much Skype for everything.

I also suggest contributing to fandom somehow. Whether it's meta, theorizing, art, fic, lore organization, or resource collection, it's all really neat, and mostly helpful to people. You can also lick ass of people you want to befriend: I wrote fics for people because I was inspired by them and their work and it worked out really well, actually. Kissing ass actually works, especially when you're sincere in your admiration and genuinely want to show someone how much they've inspired you. One place where I've actually made friends is AO3; for people who comment on your stuff with thoughtful things, PM (on Tumblr) for Skype deets, and start screaming about how much you love Thing over Skype.

You can go tag-diving on Tumblr, but I don't recommend it: the UI is horrible (at least from my perspective, I've been using Tumblr since March 2011 and it's all been downhill since then), occasionally people spam the tags with hate or things that are completely unrelated, and for rarepairs the tag is nearly empty (stares longingly at #soljohn and #johnsol tags).

liminal I'm gonna make it through this year if it kills me

I actually like reddit fandom things, like /r/adventuretime, /r/stevenuniverse, /r/thelastairbender

there aren't a lot of people leaking in from other parts of reddit (at least from what I can see) there is a lot of fanart, discussion threads, and the atmosphere is much more chill than tumbr. IMO unless you are in a small fandom tumblr is one of the worst fandom places. Yes there is a lot of great analysis and fanart/fancomics but there is also way too much drama and stress for me. I had to quit the Steven Universe fandom on tumblr after they harassed the creators on tumblr because of perceived cultural appropriation (the temple they live at is a woman with multiple arms, among other things). I occasionally look at SU stuff on tumblr but I always end up very frustrated by the antics of the large and very vocal SJW part of the fandom on tumblr.

unknownanonymous i am inimitable, i am an original|18+

as @pixels said, kintsugi is a good place for this. my norm the genie (from fairly oddparents) thread worked out much better than i'd hoped, for example.

also, yep, contributing is a good idea! i've always had the most friends and interaction when my anxiety wasn't getting in the way of me doing things, and when i was younger, i did a fair bit of fic for specific people, which worked out well.

My other fandom space actually isn't that different from LJ - it's Dreamwidth roleplaying. We talk about a lot of fandom shit on plurk when we're not actively RPing and it's mostly pretty nice, as long as you avoid a couple places. Wankgate makes tumblr look friendly.

  6. Deresto

    Deresto Foolish Mortal

this thread brings back memories of crawling the deviantart comment section as a dorky 13 - 14 year old and hanging out in the manga section of the Big library downtown with all the "cool" kids. i am was a total weeaboo.

i'll agree with this, there's actually quite a lot of cool people in the fandom oriented sections, and the whole site is geared specifically towards discussion with others who like the same stuff as you.

@Starcrossedsky I know, anon memes are the worst lol. I've been involved in a few and they're always pretty much worse than any other type of nerd nest. i guess i like to challenge myself
    Speakin of which there's a couple characters i really wanna play but i'm just not sure if i wanna devote the time to it. but idk because i think it would help me with my writing skills before i try to do something like a full comic. idk ;;

@pixels I've ass-kissed a couple times, but it never went anywhere ;; i didn't even get a follow. I need to produce more and idk, I have this whole comic AU that I want to make, but I just can't figure out the small stuff

I'm looking forward to the launch of Inkstand, it seems like a promising blogging platform with much more focus on keeping things inclusive and user friendly

Definitely come rp, and if you're looking to use it to improve writing it might be better for you to focus on a one-on-one, rather than a larger group. Even just plotting things out can help, ime.
