Guys, I love All That You Love Will Be Carried Away and the sequels and byzantienne's Kylo Ren POV remix so much it is becoming an actual problem. For those of you who are sailing this garbage scow with me... Spoiler: The Kylux garbage scow Things that are currently killing me about the new chapter: General Hux's slow realization that the path he's on is eventually, one day, going to lead to fighting not just Snoke, but the whole colossal totalitarian structure he devoted his life to building, and that he's going to do it anyway. Kylo Ren being able to read Hux's mind and yet still blindsided by Hux wanting to protect him from Snoke. Phasma and Hux being bros. Ren destroying consoles to give them an excuse to meet in private. Mozart's requiem.
Sooo, does anyone want to take me up on my bet that the first hand loss of the sequel trilogy will be when Kylo's lightsaber finally explodes? #dismemberment is an integral part of star wars as a franchise
Following the pattern the movie set for everything else, I think they're gonna escalate up to an entire arm. just lop that sucker off at the shoulder. And idk if I want it to be Ren or Rey, but dang that exploding lightsaber thing would be so cool and it'd be the perfect way for Ren if he is the one to get dehanded. #losing a limb: "cool and perfect"
I have also provisionally decided that until they tell us otherwise, I'm going to assume a major contributing factor to Ben killing everyone was that he got a C- in lightsaber-making class.
I kinda got the implication that he was working with what materials he could find? Like, I doubt someone would deliberately build a lightsaber with a broken crystal and thus have to make a bunch of fancy dangerous modifications to it just to make the damn thing work. (Extra canon material says that's why it looks all crackly and has the "crossguard" vents. It's basically someone cobbling a broadsword out of scrap metal from junked cars or something.) I think that's part of why he coveted Luke's saber / why Luke's saber was so valuable. With the Jedi and most (all?) Sith completely gone and all their tech lost, a functioning lightsaber is probably incredibly rare, ancestral qualities aside. I bet given proper materials he would be a bitchin awesome master saber craftsman.
But like.....canonically, afaik, the crystals are pretty accessible, especially if you work for the galactic overlords who own the areas where the crystals are mined? I could be wrong tho Apparently the crystals are originally colorless and take on color depending on light side vs. dark side, and I saw a theory floating around that Kylo Ren is just terrified that if he gets a brand new crystal, it won't be a Sith-y color and the cracked one was the only pre-red one he could find
I mean, the cracked crystal and wobbly blade are what I was referencing there. And, to be fair, while I don't know if it's still canon, the place most of the Jedi got their lightsaber crystals from did get blown up during the Clone Wars? But that didn't stop Luke from pulling a new crystal out of his ass when he made a new lightsaber between ESB and RotJ. I'm still wondering how in the heck Maz Kanata got hold of Anakin/Luke's lightsaber when it fell down from Cloud City, BTW.
APPLY SALT GRAINS HERE I'm most familiar with vidja gaem canon and even at the height of the Sith/Jedi orders crystals were fairly rare and precolored. Someone finds a planet full of them at one point and it was an arms race between the Empire and Jedi to take the planet because holy shit huge crystal stash. Is the Clone Wars source a planet called Illum? I'm not up to there in CW but of Illum got asploded yeah there's very few other sources of crystals. And sabers actually have TWO crystals. There's a color one that provides Force Thing 1 and another colorless one that focuses it. AFAIK Kylo only has the color one, and that's cracked, so cracklies.
Consider me corrected-ified :pp I'm definitely no Star Wars expert, I'm just good at regurgitating believable-sounding theories that I find online
I spent a lot of time looking at the Wookieepedia page on lightsaber crystals recently, and I think canon is inconsistent? Especially between the video games and everything else. It seems to be split between "you get a colorless crystal and attune it to the Force and this gives the blade a color" (there's even a case where someone took a red lightsaber crystal and cleared the Dark Side out of it and turned it yellow) and "you can get special kinds of crystals that automatically make the blade this color." Plus, well, most of what WAS canon got thrown out, so I'm not sure anyone even 100% knows what to go by anymore.
Digging around, I can find one official source which I think is still canon for at least kyber crystals starting out clear.
Yeah, I saw that on the same page. Though apparently Luke's was synthetic too, because Palpy had massive restrictions on trade of all the crystals most commonly used in lightsabers and destroyed most of the places they came from, so he had to make it with a special furnace he found in Obi-Wan's house. (Not that any of this stuff is necessarily canon anymore. X_X)
This is all really intriguing and fits weirdly well in with the fact that I've somehow internalized a headcanon that Kylo's second lightsaber (I'm a big fan of the explody hand prediction) will be orange. Not quite sithred, but closer to it than a true jedi saber would be.
...Ren could also lose both hands, instead of one whole arm. Since he wields his saber like a double-handed greatsword, that's what would most lkely happen if it exploded during combat. I think that would be an acceptable amount of escalation and also it would be closer to the state Anakin ended up in. He could have some dramatic staring-at-robo-hands moments, with tbd amounts of internal conflict! eta: I like that orange saber theory for what mght happen afterwards.
... gently takes this. yes. (I mean I had also considered force-attached peridot-fingers but. I realize that that is silly.)
Am now considering star wars/SU crossover/fusion where all the Gems are jedi (and still Gems? who knows). They would all be terrible at it for many different reasons! :D Lapis would be the most likely to turn Sith though i think? She's the most true-neutral Gem which to me seems like the most likely starting alignment for a sith who's been newly turned from the jedi as opposed to being a sith all along like Palpatine. Selfishness, lack of altruistic feeling, a moment of justified rage... it's pretty much what happened to her in canon.
Don't even go there (Jasper is already sith-aligned; Peridot is Just Doing Her Job, her job just happens to be on the dark side).
