I never watched the anime, just read the manga. But I can't do weekly updates so I let it pile up and then binge it.

Yeah, the anime kind of diverged at the end. I guess it might be better than wandering into filler, but it would have to get a Brotherhood (Sisterhood?) treatment to do the rest of the manga and it's nowhere near popular enough for that.

And honestly, I can do manga much more easily than anime. I'm a bit TV-averse.

Me too! One of the reasons I initially asked. I can do TV in a group, but by myself? Not really. Anime's a bit easier than live action, apparently my brain counts TV characters as close enough to "real" that it uses spoons in the same way a small party might, so if I don't know/like the characters and don't have people I do know and like around, well... it just drains me, for whatever reason. It's weird.

But on the topic of amazing things, if'n y'all haven't read or watched Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun), you should do so at once. The manga is up at Batoto, the anime on Crunchyroll for sure.

It's the story of a girl who falls for a boy in her class and confesses her feelings... poorly. Hearing her say "I'm your fan" Nozaki's response is to give Sakura an autograph. You see, he writes a romance manga! Her second attempt to confess sees her becoming his assistant, instead. The show proceeds to introduce their various friends, most of whom have or do work their way into Nozaki's manga. The humor is very light, there's only one character that comes off as being the butt of the joke more than others and he deserves every bit of it. Large parts of the humor come from people misunderstanding one another, but lemme give you an example:

One character learns another wants to be a girl. Rather than reacting with disgust or dismay or anything that one might (depressingly) expect in a schoolyard comedy, she attempts to support him as much as possible. Why'd I say "him"? Well, he doesn't want to be a girl at all, she just misunderstood. So the humor comes from her giving this cis guy all these feminine things, including skirts and such, and him being really unsure as to what's going on and whether or not she's getting back at him for something he's forgotten.

Much of the humor is of that sort. Misunderstandings abound, but the earnest attempts to make each other happy set this apart from most Comedies of Errors that spring to mind. The kids all mean well, but are doofuses, and a comic/show full of well-meaning doofuses is a real balm when one needs it.

  5. Acey

Acey hand extended, waiting for a shake

No one has mentioned my favorite anime yet, but given that my favorite anime is fucking Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt, that's...that's probably understandable. I have simple tastes okay. :(

I've been enjoying KLK so far, personally. Especially Mako. Holy shit what a cutie pie.

Hm...what else? I've been meaning to watch a bunch of the animes (especially Evangelion and Utena), but I'm the kind of person who's too fucking lazy to do things she actually WANTS to do, so...yeah. And I've been reading Junji Ito's work a lot lately. I'm also reading Octopus Girl, which is this weird horror-comedy thing; it's pretty fun but it's a bit reliant on grossout humor, as a fair warning. (Yes, I know, this is coming from someone who just declared her love for PASWG. It's just got a different feel to it.)

Also, if any of my fellow Homestucks happen to be fans of a certain anime about dolls (cough cough Rozen Maiden cough), please let me know because I NEED TO SPERG ABOUT MY CROSSOVER HEADCANONS.

#damara IS troll suigintou okay #like this is non-negotiable #and aradia would be megu because fixation on death and also because i can't fucking resist Megido Feels #bonus points for meenah as shinku #cause it'd be funny okay

reviving this thread because i'm in small fandom anime hell. i just finished charlotte and i had vague ideas that it would be tragic because it's by the creator of angel beats and clannad and i have heard from my brother both are really sad at points. it was indeed tragic. i have so many feelings and no where to put them because the fandom barely exists. i can't write and i want fanfic aus where they're happy instead of dead, tortured, or mourning and there's a grand total of seven fics on ao3. i'm cry.

anyways, i totally recommend it, it's basically what i hope to see every time i find a "high schoolers with superpowers" anime, and then some. plus the main character's unabashedly a huge trash can who learns to be a better person in a realistic way, and it's awesome. double plus there's a lot of really fun twists and unexpected stuff.

Oh, my roommate was watching that, I saw the last episode. It did look very tragic.

yeah, i'm debating if i should go watch angel beats since i liked charlotte so much or take a break from the emotional rollecoaster that's gonna put me on and do something a little more lighthearted like watch gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun again.

I started watching Gatchaman Crowds recently and I like it! It's super fun. However, I think I'm also gonna try more of my usual fare - the darker, grittier (okay some of us never outgrow our grimdark phase and I've had to accept that about myself) and more philosophical stuff. I loved Ergo Proxy and Serial Experiment Lain, but I can't watch the latter without bawling my eyes out. I watched it at a very vulnerable time in my life and it took on a lot of meaning for me. I actually didn't like Evangelion (I know, I'm the worst) even though by all means, I should have. Does anyone have and recommendations?

@ZeroEsper have you ever seen monster? i've only ever read some of the manga but i remember dark, gritty, and philosophical being the perfect description for it, and i've heard the anime was really well made.

I've been on a Pretty Cure binge for a couple months now, and I'm watching Go! Princess Precure now. Smile's still my fave just ahead of Fresh, but I'm digging the Princess characters a lot. There's one about witches that just aired it's first episode, and I can't wait to actually catch up on it. I might pick up the Black Rock Shooter anime again and rewatch that, because it was a fun little trauma trip, and Symphogear was pretty good.

(Irony time: Smile Precure got a dub through Netflix that's called Glitter Force, and the reviews are full of people claiming it's a ripoff of Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.)

Angel Beats ruined me for like two days, but it was really fucking good because of that.

...they do realize that Precure is not a new thing, right? And Madoka did not invent dark magical girl stuff - god forbid they ever watch Princess Tutu.

No, I don't think they do. A bunch of them didn't seem to realize it was a dub of Precure to begin with, which sort of cements my opinion of people who claim to like only "deconstructed" magical girl anime without being able to name one beyond Madoka.

I even like Madoka! I loved Tutu, and I keep meaning to pick up Utena! But oh my god, it is not the pinnacle of anime guys, you can stop.

Yu Yu Hakusho was the first anime I ever met when I was twelve, but I only actually finished watching it last year. >> This is pretty much my relationship with tv shows that have many episodes. I am in the middle of Fairy Tail too but I haven't watched it in quite literally a year, almost. And about four or five years ago I started up watching Soul Eater, watched about ten or so episodes and then stopped and haven't touched it since. None of this is because I don't enjoy them, because I hella enjoy all of them (I'm wary of Soul Eater a bit, because I feel it may get darker than I usually like, but I still want to continue watching). It's mostly because watching things takes tons of spoons for me half the time, which is. weird. and annoying.
Yu Yu Hakusho is my favourite. Everyone in it is my baby child.

I did actually at one point watch and finish a short anime with like twenty-some episodes that i... have forgotten the name of. It was fantasy. I literally watched it because it was listed on TV Tropes as an example of the trope where something sounds dirty but then turns out to be innocent- in this case, a girl telling someone to keep going, harder, while a man grunts...
she's sitting on his back while he does press-ups
I liked it a lot but the ending left a lot of things un-examined and plot threads dangling and I don't know if this was because it was cancelled unexpectedly or whether it was just bad writing but it disappointed me.

Despite my terrible watching habits, anyone have any reccommendations? As usual I disappoint everyone by not enjoying gritty, dark stuff. I also don't much enjoy slice-of-life stuff. I prefer fantasy, shonen, that sort of thing; I've never really watched anything magical girl but I am entirely open to doing so.

Well, some of the filler in Sailor Moon is actually good. Also there's an episode where they go to an island that has dinosaurs, so.

I have heard of Precure! Do you have a place to start? I hear there are many series...es.
Also I do not know how I never managed to watch Sailor Moon. My ex loved it, I remember people watching it when I was a kid... although they were the lucky ones whose parents shelled out for Sky and similar, unlike me. I had the free channels, ie. BBC1 and 2, ITV and Channel Four (technically Channel Five too but it literally never worked) and I liked it
    I didn't like it

Ooh yes! I watched some of that with my first ex! Past the bit with the little girl and the dog, too. Which I didn't know about at the time but totally called. I DID really enjoy it, I should definitely watch more, thanks for reminding me of it!

....I am SO down for islands of dinosaurs.

Aha, I started watching Yuyuyu because of the post that went around going "disabled heroes!" and well. Everything hurt after a bit.

Seconding Precure (again)-- the original is very good, and I'm really fond of Smile and Fresh, but GoGo! is pretty good too. There's something like eleven series now, but most of them are around medium sized (50-90 episodes) so that might be short enough. There's also a movie for all of them, and crossover movies between series, so if you find you can't keep your mind on the episode list, those are good for some quick watching.

edit: I started with the original, but ended up flipping over to Smile pretty quickly. I think Smile and Go!Princess have the strongest characters out the gate, but like Dist said, pretty much all of the series are standalone and the sequal series are really clearly marked.

Mermaid Melody is pretty cute from what I remember of it, and if you haven't checked out Cardcaptor Sakura, it's a classic and afaik one of the lightest series that CLAMP has put out. Tokyo Mew Mew is around fifty eps too, but it has a lot of filler; if I find a good "must watch" list, I'll post it. Magic Knight Rayearth is older, but holds up pretty well actually.

Definitely watch Little Witch Academia and the sequel; they're movies, but very good. Magical Sisters Yoyo & Nene is a charming little movie too, also centered around witches.

FMA:B is definitely a better watch if you want to avoid gritty dark stuff. The original anime has a place in my heart forever, but it gets grim and doesn't have a lot of the comedy that sort of defined the original manga. One Punch Man is absolutely charming, even though it's only got the one season, and it's fucking hysterical too. The original Digimon anime run was really good, and I'm pretty sure the dubs still hold up.

If I can remember any other good fantasy/shonen, I'll probably edit this post with it.
