    turns out the 934th air evac squadron, based in st paul mn, is in fact the nearest medical air evac unit to the boundary waters, so eagledad wouldn't even have had to pull strings or rank to get his people to be the first to bel. like, i'm sure the hospitals in duluth and thunder bay are equipped for airlifts, but coordinating with state park search and rescue would slow them down, and the air force got a head start anyway.

    i love it when i asspull a plot point and then research confirms its plausibility. :D

    things erskin might be ok with: walking on to a helicopter or plane beside his dad, while fully alert and eager to have an adventure. things erskin is not ok with: only barely reigning in the panic enough not to bite someone in the face and then going straight up into the sky.

    So, I think Erskin's damage is one bullet hit and cracked a rib and one's stuck in his haunches somewhere. Not incapacitating for a werewolf, but shitty, especially because they're still in there. He'd be leaving bloody pawprints on stuff and have gross/matted fur patches, but wouldn't be like, spurting.

    alex will go with him to the vet, i think, because bel will be in surgery for quite a while and alex needs to keep busy as much as he needs to keep erskin calm.

    would veterinary anaesthetic even work on erskin?

    Good job on the vet for recognizing a red wolf in minnesota tho. I wonder what the ethics of the situation are? Like, they're critically endangered, there's less than a thousand red wolves left, there might be less than 500, and they got bred up from a pure population of like 20. If Erskin was a regular canid, he should probably be in a preserve or a living museum, not running around the canadian border with some random dude with no animal handler certifications, and getting passed off as a service dog.

    i figure it's so unlikely the vet is kind of doubting himself, but colonel kadros seems very sure, and this endangered wolf is curled up in his lap and making Suffer Dog eyes at him, and apparently is doing the service dog thing reasonably well? and on the whole the vet does not know what to do about any of it so he is just going to save the animal. it's not like he wouldn't treat those gunshot wounds if he knew for sure it was a wolf. he likes to help animals, that's why he's a vet.

    also alex is a bit scary.

    oh, as for recognizing wolf species -- i figure it's pretty likely for a vet in duluth to be good at timberwolves, coyotes, wolf dogs, and coydogs, and part of that i think would be telling those apart. and the red wolf resembles a coyote enough that it'd make sense he'd have at least memorized identifying characteristics.

    if erskin's not going to flip his shit at the anaesthetic, i think we can ff to him waking up on bel's hospital bed, with bel still out from his own surgery.

    oh btw, there will be a military guard on bel's hospital room. someone tries to carve up the son of a base commander, you bet the military's going to keep an eye out for another attempt.

    i know i keep picture spamming but uh i love pictures, here's some really good ones of fluffed-out red wolves. erskin's probably about at this point right now... they look a lot more like regular coyotes/wolves when they've got the longer fur, because they have that diamond-shaped face and the big ruff neck. in their super-slim summer coats they look a lot more doggish.

    the men under alex's command are fond of him and kind of look out for him in a way, that's why they know about his son's history and why they're gossippy. reserve bases are apparently a bit more informal and family-like than other kinds.

    sounds cute! i would be very entertained by someone telling human pancho 'so werewolves are a thing and bel is one now and werewolf hunters are also a thing and that's why bel is hamburger now.'
