it's clear the animators watched a lot of footage of bears catching fish, some of those moves were really realistic! not so much the using a log as a boat sort of thing, but like, the way they'd chase a flapping salmon through the shallows and stuff. :D
yep. i recall, from when i watched the special features a long time ago, that the makers of the movie all did a lot of research on that kinda stuff. which is pretty common for disney, actually. i think, based on what i scrounge up from my memory of the behind the scenes, the animators of bambi actually looked at real deer, in real life (not just pictures), for example.
wait, you've never watched Brother Bear? WATCH IT IMMEDIATELY DUDE, IT'S HECKA GOOD, kind of goofy auxiliary bears aside. there's also some obnoxious caribou comic relief but aside from that the animation's really fucking excellent, and it does great stuff with the facial stylization— the bears have dull, inexpressive 'animal' faces from the perspective of human hunters, but from the perspective of each other they've got really emotional disney faces. I think Pixar used the same trick in Brave, to indicate when the queen was starting to lose her grip on sentience.
